Chikungunya epidemic: an Indian perspective.

Chikungunya, caused by the chikungunya virus, recently emerged as an important public health problem in the Indian Ocean Islands and India. In 2006, an estimated 1.38 million people across southern and central India developed symptomatic disease. The incidence of the disease may have been higher but may have been underreported due to lack of accurate reporting. First isolated in Tanzania in 1953, the chikungunya virus belongs to the family Togaviridae (single-stranded RNA alphaviruses) and has 3 distinct genotypes: East African, West African and Asian. Previous outbreaks in India (1963 and 197

Molecular Mechanism and Role of Japanese Encephalitis Virus Infection in Central Nervous System-Mediated Diseases.

The Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the most common cause of neurodegenerative disease in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region; approximately 1.15 billion people are at risk, and thousands suffer from permanent neurological disorders across Asian countries, with 10-15 thousand people dying each year. JEV crosses the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and forms a complex with receptors on the surface of neurons. GRP78, Src, TLR7, caveolin-1, and dopamine receptor D2 are involved in JEV binding and entry into the neurons, and these receptors also play a role in carcinogenic activity in cell

Quantification of skin erythema response to topical alcohol in alcohol-intolerant East Asians.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Severe alcohol intolerance characterized by flushing, headache, nausea, and tachycardia even after very modest oral alcohol consumption, is common among East Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans) and has been associated with the accumulation of acetaldehyde resulting from genetic polymorphism of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). These individuals also display erythema of the skin in response to exposure to topical alcohol. We have recently observed that dietary phytochemicals such as sulforaphane can accelerate the disposal of acetaldehyde from cells and animals by inducing ALDH

Haddad syndrome with PHOX2B gene mutation in a Korean infant.

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome with Hirschsprung's disease, also known as Haddad syndrome, is an extremely rare disorder with variable symptoms. Recent studies described that congenital central hypoventilation syndrome had deep relation to the mutation of the PHOX2B gene in its diagnosis and phenotype. We report a newborn male infant with clinical manifestations of recurrent hypoventilation with hypercapnea and bowel obstruction. These clinical manifestations were compatible with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome and Hirschsprung's disease, and polyalanine 26 repeats in

Central nervous system involvement-positive disease in consolidation/maintenance stage is a poor prognostic factor in pediatric T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a Chinese single-center report.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of central nervous system (CNS) leukemia is approximately 5%-10% in pediatric T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), typically conferring a poor prognosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We further investigated the relationship between prognosis and CNS status at different treatment stages, retrospectively examining 185 patients with pediatric T-ALL of 2131 consecutive patients with ALL seen between April 2008 and October 2020. RESULTS: Patients with CNS involvement-positive (CNSI+) disease during induction had lower initial platelet counts (P = .021), a higher propor

Novel RYR1 missense mutations in six Chinese patients with central core disease.

Central core disease (CCD) is a genetically heterogeneous congenital myopathy, and ryanodine receptor 1 (RYR1, gene ID6261) is the only pathogenicity gene until now. Data on mutation characteristics of RYR1 in the Chinese CCD population are scarce. This study searched for mutations in the C-terminal-encoding domain of RYR1 in six Chinese patients with CCD, and identified five missense mutations (N4807F, R4861H, R4893P, G4897D, and I4898T). Among them, N4807F, G4897D were novel while R4861H, R4893P, and I4898T were previously reported. All missense mutations were highly conserved across the spe

Chikungunya virus infection: molecular biology, clinical characteristics, and epidemiology in Asian countries.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a re-emerging mosquito-borne human pathogen that causes chikungunya fever, which is typically accompanied by severe joint pain. In Asia, serological evidence indicated that CHIKV first emerged in 1954. From the 1950's to 2005, sporadic CHIKV infections were attributed to the Asian genotype. However, the massive outbreak of CHIKV in India and the Southwest Indian Ocean Islands in 2005 has since raised chikungunya as a worldwide public health concern. The virus is spreading globally, but mostly in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in South and Southeast

An Unusual Case of Extranodal Natural Killer/T-Cell Lymphoma, Nasal Type Masquerading as Dacryocystitis and Sinusitis.

Extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (NNKTL) is a rare and highly aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma originating from NK or γδ T cells infected by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). In the United States, NNKTL is usually noted in people of Asian or Hispanic descent. Natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type commonly involves the upper aerodigestive tract, including the nasopharynx, nasal cavity, Waldeyer's ring, and oropharynx. Extensive local destruction and invasion has been noted, especially of the paranasal sinuses, hard palate, and central nervous system; involvement of the nas

Clinical and epidemiological observations on an outbreak of plague in Nepal.

In the autumn of 1967, plague broke out among hill people in western Nepal, a country that had not previously reported human plague. Two persons were infected from an active sylvatic focus at a grazing area 5 km from Nawra, the village where the epidemic occurred. The second patient introduced plague into the village where the rest of the cases occurred. Clinical and epidemiological evidence suggests that plague was spread both by the airborne route, resulting in 6 cases of tonsillar plague and 1 case of primary pneumonic plague, as well as by infected fleas, resulting in 17 cases of bubonic p

Cystic fibrosis carrier testing in an ethnically diverse US population.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF) and the frequency of specific disease-causing mutations vary among populations. Affected individuals experience a range of serious clinical consequences, notably lung and pancreatic disease, which are only partially dependent on genotype. METHODS: An allele-specific primer-extension reaction, liquid-phase hybridization to a bead array, and subsequent fluorescence detection were used in testing for carriers of 98 CFTR [cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (ATP-binding cassette sub-family C, member 7)] mutations among 364 890 refe

Seroprevalence survey of Chikungunya virus in Bagan Panchor, Malaysia.

In 2006, an outbreak of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) of the Asian genotype affected over 200 people in Bagan Panchor village in Malaysia. One year later, a post-outbreak survey was performed to determine attack rate, asymptomatic rate, and post-infection sequelae. Findings were compared with recent CHIKV outbreaks of the Central/East African genotype. A total of 180 residents were interviewed for acute symptoms and post-infection physical quality of life and depressive symptoms. Sera from 72 residents were tested for CHIKV neutralizing antibodies. The estimated attack rate was 55.6%, and 17.5% of

Plague in Kazakhstan at the present time.

Since 1990 to 2002, 19 human plague cases and 2 bacteria-carriers cases were registered in natural plague foci on the territory of the republic. For last 12 years plague in forms of bubonic and bubonic-septic was diagnosed in Kazakhstan. Out of 19 patients (14 men--73.6% and 5 women--26.3%), 13 persons recovered (8.4%), 6 persons died (31.6%). Employment of the treatment in the new scheme sharply lowered lethality from plague. Live attenuated Y. pestis EV vaccine available for human and camel use is applied as a basic preventive measure in plague natural foci. Epidemiological importance of ill

Physical activity participation and the risk of chronic diseases among South Asian adults: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases contribute to about half of the adult disease burden in the South Asian region. Meanwhile, physical activity levels are declining despite the global evidence of its role in the prevention of chronic diseases. While there are a plethora of systematic reviews on the effects of physical activity on chronic diseases, there has not yet been a synthesis of the evidence concerning the nature of this relationship among people living in South Asian countries incorporating multiple chronic diseases and a focus on physical activity domains. The aim of this protocol is to desc

Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Associated with Takayasu Arteritis.

Takayasu arteritis is a chronic inflammatory vasculitis with granulomatous panarteritis particularly impacting large vessels including the aorta and its branches, especially the subclavian arteries, with clinical manifestation dependent on the involved artery. Sequelae of the active disease vary, including stenosis, occlusions, or aneurysmal dilatations of the large vessels. The prevalence of Takayasu arteritis is higher in the Asian population and in Japan, but quite low in the United States, varying from 0.9-8.4 per million people. Ocular manifestations are rare and lead to a delay in diagno
