Neurocysticercosis is the most frequent helminthiasis of the central nervous system and is caused by the presence of Taenia solium cysticerci. Nitazoxanide (NTZ) is an antifolate containing the pyrrolopyrimidine-based nucleus that exerts its antiprotozoal activity due to interference with the pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme which is essential to anaerobic energy metabolism. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of NTZ on the energetic metabolism of Taenia crassiceps cysticerci intracranially inoculated BALB /c mice. The infected animals were treated with a single or

Cerebral cystic echinococcosis (CCE) is rare and constitutes 1-2% of all cystic echinococcosis. The cysts are usually solitary and most frequently located in the supratentorial region. CCE is classified as primary and secondary. The primary cysts developed from the embryos which escaped from the filter systems are more frequent and usually solitary and fertile. The secondary cysts result from spontaneous, traumatic or surgical rupture of the primary CCE by embolization of scolices. They are usually multiple and infertile and do not have brood capsule or scolices. Symptoms usually develop slowl

Eosinophilc meningitis is commonly associated with Angiostrongylus and Gnathostoma infection and has largely been reported from Thailand. We present the first case report of neurognathostomaisis in a pediatric patient from India. A 3.5 year old girl presented with fever, parasthesis, behavioral changes followed by flaccid quadriparesis. Neuroimaging showed haemorrhagic radiculomyelitis with cerebrospinal fluid eosinophilia. Diagnosis of Gnathostoma infection was confirmed serologically and she was treated with anthelminthic drugs and steroids. This report emphasizes the increasing importance o

The saprophytic nematode Halicephalobus is a rare cause of fatal human meningo-encephalitis, and West Nile virus is neurotropic flavivirus implicated in a variety of clinical neurologic syndromes. Here we report a case of rapidly progressive CNS encephalopathy and death. Serologic, immuno-histochemical, histopathologic and nucleic acid studies demonstrate the presence of active Halicephalobus and West Nile virus in the CNS tissue. This is the first reported case of co-infection with these neurotropic pathogens.

Cercariae of the nasal bird schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti are able to penetrate into mammalian skin and migrate to the mouse central nervous system (CNS) causing tissue injury in certain cases. Our study shows that the severity of T. regenti pathologies in the CNS closely depends on the host immune status. During the primary infection of immunocompetent mice, the parasites evoked an acute inflammatory reaction in the skin and the CNS involving focal oedema and cellular infiltration of the tissue. Challenge infections resulted in the development of extensive inflammatory foci in the host

The development of nasal avian schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia in their final host is poorly known. Therefore, an experimental infection of ducklings (Anas platyrhynchos f. dom.) by T. regenti was performed. The infection resulted in leg paralysis and orientation/balance disorders of birds. The examination of the duck's spinal cord and brain confirmed the presence of developing parasites in pre-patent as well as patent periods. The absence of the worms in other tissues strongly supports our hypothesis that the parasite migrates through the central nervous system (CNS) to its final lo

OBJECTIVES: Central nervous system (CNS) paragonimiasis is relatively uncommon and its imaging findings have not been fully described in the limited literature. Our aim was to investigate the comprehensive imaging features of CNS paragonimiasis based on a large-scale case series study, with an emphasis on the unreported imaging findings.
METHODS: The clinical and imaging data of 206 pediatric patients with CNS paragonimiasis were continuously collected from 1181 cases of paragonimiasis in the past 12 years at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University (China). All patients underw

BACKGROUND: We investigated the proportion of pediatric patients with cerebral paragonimiasis and intracranial hemorrhage who have intracranial pseudoaneurysms.
METHODS: Images of 17 pediatric patients with cerebral paragonimiasis that first manifested as secondary intracranial hemorrhage were evaluated. All patients underwent computed tomographic angiography before surgery. A diagnosis of cerebral paragonimiasis was confirmed based on a positive Paragonimus-specific antibody test in serum samples from all 17 patients. Cerebral paragonimiasis in five of the 17 patients was further confirmed b

BACKGROUNDS: The incidence of angiostrongyliasis is increasing in recent decades due to the expanding endemic areas all over the world. Clinicians face tremendous challenge of diagnosing angiostrongyliasis because of the lack of awareness of the disease and less effective definitive laboratory tests.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old man initially manifested skin itching, emesis, myalgia and quadriparesis. With progressive weakness of four limbs and elevated protein in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), he was diagnosed as Guillain-Barré syndrome and treated with intravenous methylprednisolone and

This systematic review was designed to provide "evidence-based" answers to identify the best treatment for a complicated hydatid cyst of the liver and the appropriate management of disseminated cystic echinococcosis. An extensive electronic search of the relevant literature was performed using Medline and the Cochrane Library. This systematic review enabled us make to determine the best treatment options for the following conditions. Liver hydatid cysts ruptured into the biliary tract: Common bile duct exploration should be conducted using intraoperative cholangiography and choledoscopy. When

A 5-month-old female Kelpie developed paraparesis, hind limb ataxia and spinal hyperaesthesia 4 days after ovariohysterectomy. Neurological examination demonstrated upper motor neuron signs in the pelvic limbs with lower motor neuron signs in the tail. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis demonstrated an increased protein concentration and marked eosinophilic pleocytosis. The dog was known to have eaten rats, snails and slugs. A tentative diagnosis of neural angiostrongylosis was made and later confirmed using an ELISA based on soluble antigens obtained from larval 4 Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Antib

Cerebral gnathostomiasis is a severe form of human infection caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum. We report sequential brain imaging in serologically proven cerebral gnathostomiasis. The clinical and radiographic correlation showed the probable route taken by the parasite during its migration through the central nervous system. We offer additional insight into pathogenesis of cerebral gnathostomiasis and its rare complication, subdural hemorrhage, a finding not previously reported in the literature.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a parasitic infestation produced by Echinococcus multilocularis. The parasite is a rare human infestation with a wide geographic distribution. It primarily affects the liver, and may spread hematogenously to produce metastatic foci in the distant organs. AE can metastise to the lungs, brain and bones. Cerebral involvement is rare but may be lethal. Cerebral AE is a rare but life-threatening parasitic disease. Here we report a 52-year-old man with cerebellar involvement of Echinococcus multilocularis.
