BACKGROUND: Facial soft tissue analysis is becoming increasingly emphasized in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. While traditional cephalometry primarily focuses on hard tissues, recent non-invasive imaging techniques offer the potential to comprehensively evaluate three-dimensional (3D) facial soft tissues. The aim of the study was to establish the geometrical 3D and cephalometric divergence between Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) derived images and scanned soft tissues. Crucial for enhancing orthodontic diagnosis, minimizing patient exposure to ionizing radiation and providi

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether measurements performed on conventional frontal radiographs are comparable to measurements performed on three-dimensional (3D) models of human skulls derived from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and if the latter can be used in longitudinal studies. Cone beam computed tomography scans and conventional frontal cephalometric radiographs were made of 40 dry human skulls. From the CBCT scan a 3D model was constructed. Standard cephalometric software was used to identify landmarks and to calculate ratios and angles. The same operator identifie

The success rate of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea is generally only 50-60%. In order to improve this, various predictive factors for the outcome of UPPP were studied, including the Müller maneuver and cephalometry. Thirty unselected consecutive patients with obstructive sleep apnea (median apnea index (AI) 26 apneas/h, range 5-78) underwent UPPP with standard tonsillectomy except in the case of small tonsils and using CO2 laser for the palatal resection. Polysomnographic control 5 months after surgery showed that 63% of all patients had obtained a

BACKGROUND: The aesthetic and functional outcomes surrounding Le Fort-based, face-jaw-teeth transplantation have been suboptimal, often leading to posttransplant class II/III skeletal profiles, palatal defects, and "hybrid malocclusion." Therefore, a novel technology-real-time cephalometry-was developed to provide the surgical team instantaneous, intraoperative knowledge of three-dimensional dentoskeletal parameters.
METHODS: Mock face-jaw-teeth transplantation operations were performed on plastic and cadaveric human donor/recipient pairs (n = 2). Preoperatively, cephalometric landmarks were

INTRODUCTION: Conventional cephalometry is an inexpensive and well-established method for evaluating patients with dentofacial deformities. However, patients with major deformities and in particular asymmetric cases are difficult to evaluate by conventional cephalometry. Reliable and accurate evaluation in the orbital and midfacial region in craniofacial syndrome patients is difficult due to inherent geometric magnification, distortion and the superpositioning of the craniofacial structures on cephalograms. Both two- and three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) have been proposed to alleviat

As methods for identifying the small-for-dates fetus in twin pregnancies, serial ultrasonic cephalometry and a new two-stage ultrasound examination schedule have been evaluated and compared. Serial cephalometry is associated with technical and interpretative problems, and only 24 (56 per cent) of 43 small-for-dates fetuses in 66 retrospectively studied twin pregnancies showed detectably abnormal biparietal diameter growth. The two-stage schedule comprises an accurate assessment of gestational age in early pregnancy, and determination of the product of the crown-rump length and trunk area at 34

PURPOSE: It is unclear whether soft palate-associated changes in cephalometry associated with a mandibular advancement device (MAD) are independently associated with improvements in polysomnography (PSG) respiratory parameters in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
METHODS: This retrospective review aimed to identify the association between soft palate-associated changes in cephalometry and PSG changes after application of an MAD. Korean patients diagnosed with OSA who underwent cephalometry with or without an MAD were enrolled. All the patients were evaluated after undergoing full-night PSG twice

OBJECT: 3D cephalometry is often the only way to set up accurate diagnosis and treatment plan in the field of reconstructive surgery. In these cases complement exposures are needed beyond common cephalograms with higher accuracy than conventional Cone-Beam CT. Consequently the aim of our study was to perform a complex 3D cephalometry. As the first step of this approach, was the 3D adaptation of DiPaolo's Quadrilateral technique, and to determine norms of references in lower face by means of CBCT.
METHOD: Thirty non-orthodontic CBCT scans were selected for the digitalization. The most importan

Cephalometry has been used to measure hard and soft facial tissues, as well as the pharyngeal air space for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The changes occurring in the pharynx due to maxillo-mandibular advancement (MMA) have not been established or quantified. The objective of this study was to identify the anatomical changes of the pharynx and of hard tissues that occur in patients with OSA after MMA. 19 patients with a polysomnographic diagnosis of OSA were submitted to cephalometric analysis before and 6 months after surgery in order to evaluate the changes produced by MMA

Correcting facial asymmetry is a difficult problem for plastic surgeons. From 1991 to 1996, the authors treated 53 cases of mandibular angle resection, 13 of which were of patients with an asymmetrical lower face. On the basis of these experiences, the authors highlight two important points in dealing with the asymmetrical lower face. The first is accurate resection of each side of the face. A cloth pattern was used to improve the accuracy of the procedure and to make the final result match the preoperative design regarding amount and shape. The second concerns soft-tissue change after the ope
