Development and larval morphology of Loa loa in experimental primate hosts.

Experimental infections with Loa loa were established in laboratory primates by inoculation of third-stage larvae recovered from either Chrysops silacea infected after engorging on a human volunteer with loiasis, or Chrysops atlanticus infected after blood feeding on experimentally infected primates. The third molt occurred at 16 to 20 days postinoculation of infective larvae, and the fourth at about 50 days. Early larval development was characterized by rapid growth and marked differentiation of the reproductive systems. Differences in the body's growth rate between the sexes were seen as ear

Epidemiology of yellow fever virus in humans, arthropods, and non-human primates in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Yellow fever (YF) has re-emerged in the last two decades causing several outbreaks in endemic countries and spreading to new receptive regions. This changing epidemiology of YF creates new challenges for global public health efforts. Yellow fever is caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV) that circulates between humans, the mosquito vector, and non-human primates (NHP). In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we review and analyse data on the case fatality rate (CFR) and prevalence of YFV in humans, and on the prevalence of YFV in arthropods, and NHP in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We perform

Hematological changes in subperiodic Brugia malayi infection of the leaf-monkey, Presbytis cristata.

Hematological changes were monitored in the leaf-monkey, Presbytis cristata, infected experimentally with 200 subperiodic Brugia malayi infective larvae. Prepatent periods were 54-86 days and peak microfilarial geometric mean counts (GMCs) were 1324 per ml blood. Total leukocyte and differential counts were measured at pre-infection, and then at weakly intervals before and during patency. Blood eosinophil level increased to about thrice the initial level at 3 weeks post-infection and this was maintained for the next 13 weeks before it started to rise again, increasing to more than 5 times the

Evidence of possible natural infections of man with Brugia pahangi in South Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia.

Blood from 9 humans, 6 domestic cats (Felis domesticus), and 5 silvered leaf monkeys (Presbytis cristatus) from South Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia, with known filarial infections was examined for determination ofacid phosphatase activity of the microfilarae (mff). The findings suggest 1) that Brugia parasites from domestic cats and silvered leaf monkeys can be speciated by acid phosphatase activity and that speciation by acid phosphatase assay corresponds to that based upon adult worm morphology and 2) that Brugia mff from humans have acid phosphatase activity characteristic of that of B. pa

The plan of the human face: a test of three general concepts.

In The Handbook of Facial Growth, Enlow proposes a series of anatomic concepts that account for "the plan of the human face." Three of those concepts are examined in this article, which presents measurements of 253 adult female primates from thirty-two species. As part of a system of craniofacial counterparts, Enlow proposes that the breadth of the mandibular ramus should equal the breadth of the pharynx. The relationship between ramus breadth and PNS-Ba in the primates studied strongly supports this hypothesis. A second concept tested concerns the relationship between prognathism and maxillar

Changes in concentrations of serum prolactin, FSH, oestradiol and progesterone and of the sex skin during the menstrual cycle in the mangabey monkey (Cercocebus atys lunulatus).

Daily blood samples were collected from 6 regularly menstruating mangabey monkeys. Because serum LH could not be measured by a radioimmunoassay for human LH, Day 0 was taken as the day of maximum serum oestradiol concentration. The hormone patterns were very similar to those of other cercopithecids and women. However, the peak of serum progesterone was lower in mangabeys than in women. There was no distinct peak of serum oestradiol during the luteal phase of mangabeys but the average levels were higher than during the early follicular phase, a pattern more similar to that in other non-human pr

Daytime behavior of Pteropus vampyrus in a natural habitat: the driver of viral transmission.

Flying foxes, the genus Pteropus, are considered viral reservoirs. Their colonial nature and long flight capability enhance their ability to spread viruses quickly. To understand how the viral transmission occurs between flying foxes and other animals, we investigated daytime behavior of the large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus) in the Leuweung Sancang conservation area, Indonesia, by using instantaneous scan sampling and all-occurrence focal sampling. The data were obtained from 0700 to 1700 hr, during May 11-25, 2016. Almost half of the flying foxes (46.9 ± 10.6% of all recorded bats) were aw

Identification of Plasmodium knowlesi erythrocyte binding proteins.

Plasmodium knowlesi, a malaria of Old World monkeys, invades all Duffy blood group positive human erythrocytes and various New World monkey erythrocytes except Cebus apella. We had previously identified a 135 kDa parasite protein in supernatants of P. knowlesi cultures that bound to Duffy positive but not to Duffy negative human erythrocytes [Haynes et al., J. Exp. Med. 167, 1873-1881 (1988)]. We now use New World monkey erythrocytes as a reagent to identify P. knowlesi proteins in culture supernatants that will bind to all New World monkey erythrocytes susceptible to invasion but not to C. ap

Experimental transmission of nocturnally periodic Wuchereria bancrofti to Indian leaf monkey (Presbytis entellus).

Successful experimental transmission of the human lymphatic dwelling nocturnal periodic strain of Wuchereria bancrofti has been achieved from man to Indian leaf monkey (Presbytis entellus) through a susceptible strain of Aedes aegypti. The prepatent period varied between 195 and 240 days. Microfilaria (mf) levels were in general low and the peak count was attained at 1800 hr. Of the adult worms 5-12.5% were recovered from male langur while females revealed poor (2.54%) recovery. This host--parasite model thus makes available the target parasite material in substantial quantity to work on chemo

Endocrine profile of pregnancy in the patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas).

Spontaneous toxemia occurs in approximately 6% of pregnancies in patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). To assess further the relevance of this animal as a model system for toxemia of pregnancy in humans, we characterized the endocrine profile of the patas pregnancy by analyzing weekly blood samples for estrone, estradiol, estriol, progesterone, aldosterone, and PRA throughout gestation. The profiles obtained bear striking resemblance to those described for human pregnancy, an unexpected finding since the patas monkey is not a higher hominoid. We conclude that the patas monkey may provide a model

Clinical and immunologic responses of silvered leaf monkeys (Presbytis cristatus) to experimental reinfection with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi.

Silvered leaf monkeys (Presbytis cristatus) that had recovered from active Rickettsia tsutsugamushi infections 14 months previously became rickettsemic when inoculated with homologous, related, or unrelated strains of R. tsutsugamushi. In contrast to the results after the initial infection that produced disease, no signs were observed after the subsequent infections. Most animals responded with detectable titers of antibody to the Karp antigen regardless of the inoculated strains. Strains recovered during rickettsemia usually had antigens related only to the challenge strains, but in three sil

Cytokine-Mediated Tissue Injury in Non-human Primate Models of Viral Infections.

Viral infections trigger robust secretion of interferons and other antiviral cytokines by infected and bystander cells, which in turn can tune the immune response and may lead to viral clearance or immune suppression. However, aberrant or unrestricted cytokine responses can damage host tissues, leading to organ dysfunction, and even death. To understand the cytokine milieu and immune responses in infected host tissues, non-human primate (NHP) models have emerged as important tools. NHP have been used for decades to study human infections and have played significant roles in the development of

Whole Genome Characterization of Orthopoxvirus (OPV) Abatino, a Zoonotic Virus Representing a Putative Novel Clade of Old World Orthopoxviruses.

Orthopoxviruses (OPVs) are diffused over the complete Eurasian continent, but previously described strains are mostly from northern Europe, and few infections have been reported from Italy. Here we present the extended genomic characterization of OPV Abatino, a novel OPV isolated in Italy from an infected Tonkean macaque, with zoonotic potential. Phylogenetic analysis based on 102 conserved OPV genes (core gene set) showed that OPV Abatino is most closely related to the Ectromelia virus species (ECTV), although placed on a separate branch of the phylogenetic tree, bringing substantial support

Nonhuman primate models for evaluation of AIDS therapy.

Infection of macaque monkeys with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) has been established as an excellent animal model system for studying the pathogenesis of an HIV-like virus and for evaluating newly developed antiretroviral drugs and vaccines. Based on their genetic, antigenic, and biologic properties, the simian immunodeficiency viruses are the closest known relatives of the human AIDS viruses, and experimental infection of macaque monkeys results in a disease that is remarkably similar to human AIDS. Infected macaques show diarrhea, weight loss, hematologic abnormalities including lympho

Histopathological changes in the eyes of mangabey monkeys with lepromatous leprosy.

Leprosy is the third leading cause of preventable blindness; however, little is known about the spread of infection to the eye. We have studied the eyes of three sooty managabey monkeys. Two were experimentally infected with Mycobacterium leprae; the third was not infected. In one of the infected animals there was histopathological evidence of lepromatous leprosy as evidenced by a chronic inflammatory infiltrate at the limbus, and detection of acid-fast bacilli in the corneal stroma, blood vessel walls, and corneal nerves. The latter were damaged as a result of the bacillary invasion. Electron

Experimental disseminated strongyloidiasis in Erythrocebus patas. II. Immunology.

Parasite-specific humoral and cellular immune responses were evaluated in seven Erythrocebus patas monkeys experimentally infected with a Southeast Asian strain of Strongyloides stercoralis. Most animals developed high titers of anti-larval surface IgG antibody (as evaluated by the indirect immunofluorescence test), and all animals tested developed specific IgE antibody (as shown by the in vitro histamine release test). Modest lymphoproliferative responses to S. stercoralis antigens were demonstrated in most animals during the early phase of the infection (days 20-40), but disappeared later. S
