A Case Series Evaluating the Correlation Between Glycosuria Measurement and Serum Fructosamine in Two Diabetic De Brazza's Monkeys (Cercopithecus neglectus) and a Diabetic Tufted Capuchin (Sapajus apella).

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common condition affecting non-human primates (NHPs). The use of serum fructosamine in NHPs is a useful monitoring tool. Data does not exist to show whether there is any correlation between glycosuria and serum fructosamine. The purpose of this case series was to evaluate if there is a correlation between these two measurements to inform future monitoring of diabetic NHPs. METHODS: Two De Brazza's monkeys (Cercopithecus neglectus) and one tufted capuchin (Sapajus apella) previously diagnosed with DM underwent daily urinalysis monitoring. The average of

A natural history of Chlorocebus dryas from camera traps in Lomami National Park and its buffer zone, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with notes on the species status of Cercopithecus salongo.

The natural history and taxonomic status of two central African primates, Cercopithecus dryas and Cercopithecus salongo have long been in question. Recent studies confirmed that C. dryas is a basal member of the savanna monkey clade, and that it prefers dense undergrowth in lowland rainforest. While these studies advanced our knowledge of this enigmatic species, key aspects of its natural history remain poorly documented. Furthermore, the lack of a field study that documents pelage patterns of both sexes and different age classes of C. dryas has led to a disagreement over the validity of C. sa

First detection of Echinococcus multilocularis infection in two species of nonhuman primates raised in a zoo: a fatal case in Cercopithecus diana and a strongly suspected case of spontaneous recovery in Macaca nigra.

The causative parasite of alveolar echinococcosis, Echinococcus multilocularis, maintains its life cycle between red foxes (Vulpes vulples, the definitive hosts) and voles (the intermediate hosts) in Hokkaido, Japan. Primates, including humans, and some other mammal species can be infected by the accidental ingestion of eggs in the feces of red foxes. In August 2011, a 6-year-old zoo-raised female Diana monkey (Cercopithecus diana) died from alveolar echinococcosis. E. multilocularis infection was confirmed by histopathological examination and detection of the E. multilocularis DNA by polymera

Enamel Prism Angle Variation and Hard-Object Feeding in Cercopithecoids With Known Diets.

OBJECTIVES: To examine relationships between enamel prism angles relative to wear surfaces and dietary hardness in three cercopithecoid genera. We hypothesized that the hard-object feeding (durophagous) Cercocebus atys and Lophocebus albigena would have higher prism angles, making their enamel in this region stiffer and stronger in this region, than the soft-object feeding Cercopithecus. We further investigated whether the habitually durophagous Cercocebus atys and the fallback hard-object feeding Lophocebus albigena had similarly high prism angles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Molars were sectione

New insights in Cercopithecinae spermatozoa.

Sperm morphometric and morphologic data have been shown to represent useful tools for monitoring fertility, improving assisted reproduction techniques and conservation of genetic material as well as detecting inbreeding of endangered primates. We provide here for the first time sperm morphologic and morphometric data from Cercopithecus neglectus, Cercopithecus cephus, Papio papio and critically endangered Cercopithecus roloway, as well as comparative data from other Cercopithecinae species, i.e. Allochrocebus lhoesti, Mandrillus sphinx and Papio anubis. Structural colouration of mammalian skin: convergent evolution of coherently scattering dermal collagen arrays.

For more than a century, the blue structural colours of mammalian skin have been hypothesized to be produced by incoherent, Rayleigh or Tyndall scattering. We investigated the colour, anatomy, nanostructure and biophysics of structurally coloured skin from two species of primates - mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) and vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) - and two species of marsupials - mouse opossum (Marmosa mexicana) and wooly opossum (Caluromys derbianus). We used two-dimensional (2-D) Fourier analysis of transmission electron micrographs (TEMs) of the collagen arrays in the primate tissues

Diversity and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in seven non-human primates of the Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire.

Parasites and infectious diseases are well-known threats to primate populations. The main objective of this study was to provide baseline data on fecal parasites in the cercopithecid monkeys inhabiting Côte d'Ivoire's Taï National Park. Seven of eight cercopithecid species present in the park were sampled: Cercopithecus diana, Cercopithecus campbelli, Cercopithecus petaurista, Procolobus badius, Procolobus verus, Colobus polykomos, and Cercocebus atys. We collected 3142 monkey stool samples between November 2009 and December 2010. Stool samples were processed by direct wet mount examination, f

A Retrospective Study Revealed Potential Cross-Transmission of Hepatitis B Virus Between Great Apes and Small Monkeys in Cameroon.

RNA extraction from five HBsAg-positive Cercopithecidae samples, followed by semi-nested PCR of the four overlapping regions of the HBV genome and phylogenetic analyses, yielded a complete HBV genome. This strain from a Cercopithecus preussi sample has close genetic proximity to isolates from Cameroonian great apes, suggesting cross-species transmission of HBV.

The use of interferon for emergency prophylaxis of marburg hemorrhagic fever in monkeys.

The possibility of emergency prophylaxis of Marburg hemorrhagic fever with leukocytic and recombinant interferons was studied in experiments on Cercopithecus aethiops. None of the agents protected monkeys from the action of lethal doses of Marburg virus. Recombinant interferon-alpha(2)administered according to the emergency prophylaxis schedule prolonged the mean life-span of monkeys injected with Marburg virus in doses of 100 and 1000 LD50 by 1.9 and 6.1 days, respectively.

Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense infection in vervet monkeys. I. Parasitologic, hematologic, immunologic and histologic results.

Twenty vervet monkeys infected with T. rhodesiense (Eatro 1989) developed chronic disease with an average duration of 65 days (variation 35-107 days). With respect to the course of the disease, and to the hematologic, immunologic and histological findings, the disease faithfully mirrored human T. rhodesiense infection. In all animals, parasitization of the CSF occurred only a few weeks after infection, and was accompanied by an increase in the cell count and the appearance of IgM in the CSF. The main histopathological feature was severe pancarditis which was responsible for death in almost all

Acute Bacterial Septicemia in a Critically Endangered Roloway Monkey in a Primate Breeding Center at the Accra Zoological Garden, Ghana: A Case Report.

This case report explains the cause of death of a roloway monkey (Cercopithecus roloway), a critically endangered primate native to the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa, that was kept for captive breeding and conservation at the Accra Zoological Garden's primate breeding center in Ghana. Sweetpea, a "15-year-old" female Roloway monkey, was found dead on September 21, 2018, without prior signs of illness. Gross and histopathological findings revealed acute fibrinous pneumonia, septicemia, and myocardial necrosis, while bacterial culture of lung tissue and thoracic fluid yielded β-hemolytic S

[Peculiarities of the distribution of Cryptosporidia (Coccidia: Cryptosporydiidae) in monkeys in an apery].

A total of 520 monkeys belonging to 6 species (Macaca mullata, M. fascicularis, M. nemestrina, Cercopithecus aethiops, Papio anubis, and P. hamadrias) were investigated. Total frequency of occurrence of the protozoan Cryptosporidium in the Adler apery constituted 13.8%. The majority of parasites were found in animals with intestinal disorders such as diarrhea. The lowest frequency of cryptosporidias occurrence was revealed in clinically healthy monkeys. Among sick monkeys, the invasion was most common in infants under one year of age. Cryptosporidiosis is rarely found just as it is, and, as a

[Demonstration by immunofluorescence of somatostatin cells in the islets of Langerhans in 3 species of monkeys].

Indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti-somatostatin serum has allowed us to detect somatostatin containing cells in the Langerhans' islets of three species of monkeys (Macacus irus, Papio hamadryas, Cercopithecus aethiops). These cells are in close relationship with another cells, but occupy a more central position in the islets. Thus, the distribution of somatostatin-containing cells in the monkey's endocrine pancreas has not a similar pattern as in rodent's pancreas; they have a comparable topography as in the human islets but these cells are always more elongated than in the human

Isolation of Mycoplasma moatsii from the intestine of wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus).

The intestinal tracts of twenty inbred SPF rats (LEW, BN, WKY, DA) and six wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout 1769) were investigated for mycoplasmas. Cultivation was in three different media. Mycoplasmas were not isolated from the intestine of the inbred SPF rats but were found in the epithelia and contents of caecum, colon and jejunum as well as in fecal samples of all of the wild Norway rats investigated. The mycoplasmas isolated all belonged to the same species, and were identified as Mycoplasma moatsii, originally isolated from grivit monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) and thoug

Prevalence of antibodies to alphaviruses and flaviviruses in free-ranging game animals and nonhuman primates in the greater Congo basin.

Vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens have comprised a significant proportion of the emerging infectious diseases in humans in recent decades. The role of many wildlife species as reservoirs for arthropod-borne viral pathogens is poorly understood. We investigated the exposure history of various African wildlife species from the Congo basin to mosquito-borne flaviviruses and alphaviruses by testing archived serum samples. Sera from 24 African forest buffalo (Syncerus caffer nanus), 34 African elephants (Loxodonta africana), 40 duikers (Cephalophus and Philantomba spp.), 25 mandrills (Mandrillus

Psorergatic acariasis in vervet monkeys.

7 cases of acariasis were discovered amongst a colony of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus pygerythrus). Lesions were confined to palpebrae and periorbital areas. Skin scrapings and biopsies were taken and the parasite was identified as Psorergates cercopitheci. The skin biopsies showed that the parasite invaded the superficial epidermis only. Skin scrapings taken from other parts of the infested animals' bodies were all negative for mites. Several of the infested animals have had physical contact with conspecifics, the majority of which have remained uninfested. Topical treatment was effective an

Cardiac lymph drainage in experimental African trypanosomiasis in vervet monkeys.

In group I (15 monkeys) the infection time was less than 70 days with one exception and histologically 14 had trypanosomal pancarditis with morphological evidence of lymph stasis. Trypanosomes served as markers of the dilated cardiac lymphatics seen at apices, atrioventricular junctions, near the His bundle, at the base of cardiac valves and around the root of the aorta and pulmonary artery. 3 hearts had apical aneurysms. In group II (6 monkeys) the infection time exceeded 130 days and despite specific non-arsenical treatment all relapsed. Histologically focal cardiac fibrosis and extravascula
