Neuropeptide deficits in schizophrenia vs. Alzheimer's disease cerebral cortex.

Neuropeptide concentrations were determined in the postmortem cerebral cortex from 19 cognitive-impaired schizophrenics, 4 normal elderly subjects, 4 multi-infarct dementia (MID) cases, and 13 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Only AD patients met criteria for AD. The normal elderly and MID cases were combined into one control group. Somatostatin concentrations were reduced in both schizophrenia and AD. Neuropeptide Y concentrations were reduced only in schizophrenia, and corticotropin-releasing hormone concentrations were primarily reduced in AD. Concentrations of vasoactive intestinal polyp

Methylxanthines modulate adenosine release from slices of cerebral cortex.

Using slices of mouse or rat cerebral cortex incubated with [3H]adenosine or [3H]adenine and/or [14C]GABA we have examined factors affecting the release of these compounds, and especially the influence of methylxanthines. Although release of purines and GABA could be induced by ouabain (10(-4) M), or p-hydroxymercuribenzoate (5 x 10(-4) M) no release was produced by ethacrynic acid (10(-3) or 10(-4) M) phenytoin (10(-3) M), noradrenaline or SC 13504. Release is probably not therefore related to (Na+, K+) ATPase or Mg2+-ATPase inhibition. At concentrations of 10(-3) and 10(-4) M, caffeine, theo

Seizures as Presenting Complaint of Cerebral Cortex Involvement in Leprosy.

Leprosy, recognized as one of the ancient diseases, predominantly affects the integumentary system and peripheral nerves. Nevertheless, central nervous system (CNS) involvement is a rare occurrence, with cortical manifestations being exceedingly infrequent. We present a case that aligns with this rarity, showcasing diffuse hyperintensities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within the cortical region of the brain. The patient's clinical presentation was marked by seizures, necessitating targeted therapeutic interventions.

Oxygen imaging of hypoxic pockets in the mouse cerebral cortex.

Consciousness is lost within seconds upon cessation of cerebral blood flow. The brain cannot store oxygen, and interruption of oxidative phosphorylation is fatal within minutes. Yet only rudimentary knowledge exists regarding cortical partial oxygen tension (Po2) dynamics under physiological conditions. Here we introduce Green enhanced Nano-lantern (GeNL), a genetically encoded bioluminescent oxygen indicator for Po2 imaging. In awake behaving mice, we uncover the existence of spontaneous, spatially defined "hypoxic pockets" and demonstrate their linkage to the abrogation of local capillary fl

Obesity and the cerebral cortex: Underlying neurobiology in mice and humans.

Obesity is a major modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by progressive atrophy of the cerebral cortex. The neurobiology of obesity contributions to AD is poorly understood. Here we show with in vivo MRI that diet-induced obesity decreases cortical volume in mice, and that higher body adiposity associates with lower cortical volume in humans. Single-nuclei transcriptomics of the mouse cortex reveals that dietary obesity promotes an array of neuron-adverse transcriptional dysregulations, which are mediated by an interplay of excitatory neurons and glial cells, and w

Identifying the genetic association between the cerebral cortex and fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a central sensitization syndrome that is strongly associated with the cerebral cortex. This study used bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the bidirectional causality between FM and the cortical surface area and cortical thickness of 34 brain regions. Inverse variance weighted (IVW) was used as the primary method for this study, and sensitivity analyses further supported the results. The forward MR analysis revealed that genetically determined thinner cortical thickness in the parstriangularis (OR = 0.0567 mm, PIVW = 0.0463), cauda

Involvement of Netrins and Their Receptors in Neuronal Migration in the Cerebral Cortex.

In mammals, excitatory cortical neurons develop from the proliferative epithelium and progenitor cells in the ventricular zone and subventricular zone, and migrate radially to the cortical plate, whereas inhibitory GABAergic interneurons are born in the ganglionic eminence and migrate tangentially. The migration of newly born cortical neurons is tightly regulated by both extracellular and intracellular signaling to ensure proper positioning and projections. Non-cell-autonomous extracellular molecules, such as growth factors, axon guidance molecules, extracellular matrix, and other ligands, pla

[Hemichorea in a patient with acute cerebral infarction of the somatosensory cortex].

A 86-year-old woman with left hemiparesis was admitted to our hospital. When visiting to our hospital, hemichorea appeared on her left extremities in an ambulance. She also had mild disturbance of consciousness, spatial disorientation, and sensory disturbance. Blood biochemical studies revealed mild renal failure. DWI MRI showed hyperintensities in the postcentral gyrus and a posterior part of the insula in the right hemisphere, but no signal changes in FLAIR. No lesions were detected in the basal ganglia. The DWI-FLAIR mismatch suggested acute cerebral infarction, and we performed intravenous

Hierarchical Organization of Tau and Amyloid Deposits in the Cerebral Cortex.

IMPORTANCE: Abnormal accumulation of tau and amyloid-β (Aβ) proteins in the human brain are 2 pathologic hallmarks of Alzheimer disease (AD). Because pathologic processes begin decades before the onset of the clinical manifestations, the study of the cortical distribution of early-stage pathologic alterations is critical in understanding the underpinnings of the disease. OBJECTIVES: To identify the in vivo brain spatial distributions of tau and Aβ deposits in a sample of cognitively normal participants in the Harvard Aging Brain Study, determine spatial patterns of pathologic alterations, and

Transient involvement of the cerebral cortex in a flare of Behçet's syndrome.

We describe a flare of Behçet's syndrome in a 42-year-old man who presented with florid mucocutaneous manifestations, headache and vomiting, but without meningeal or neurologic signs. A single, non-enhancing cortical lesion was found in the frontal lobe by computed tomography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies. Diffusion-weighted analysis and MR spectroscopy were consistent with focal inflammation. The patient improved with colchicine, and after 5 months, a repeat MR scan demonstrated resolution of the inflammatory changes suggesting that involvement of the cerebral cortex may be a se

Positional and surface area asymmetry of the human cerebral cortex.

Previous studies of cortical asymmetry have relied mainly on voxel-based morphometry (VBM), or manual segmentation of regions of interest. This study uses fully automated, surface-based techniques to analyse position and surface area asymmetry for the mid-surfaces of 112 right-handed subjects' cortical hemispheres from a cohort of young adults. Native space measurements of local surface area asymmetry and vertex position asymmetry were calculated from surfaces registered to a previously validated hemisphere-unbiased surface-based template. Our analysis confirms previously identified hemispheri

The human cerebral cortex on MRI: value of the coronal plane.

The evaluation of different cortical areas of the cerebral cortex has been analyzed using MRI of 50 normal subjects without any neurological symptoms. This analysis has been made with different spin echo and gradient echo in T1 or T2 in three different planes: horizontal, sagittal and coronal. The most accurate plane to define important cortical areas such as Broca area, Wernicke area, temporal cortex at the level of the superior temporal sulcus, angular gyrus, supra marginal gyrus, hippocampal and parahippocampal cortices as well as that of the parieto or temporo-occipital areas is the corona

The cerebral cortex malformation in thanatophoric dysplasia: neuropathology and pathogenesis.

Thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) is a relatively common, fatal form of chondrodysplastic dwarfism in which the cerebral cortex displays a unique and complex malformation. The malformation is characterized by a combination of abnormalities, which affect the temporal lobe most severely. Salient features include temporal lobe enlargement, deep transverse sulci across the inferomedial temporal surface, and hippocampal dysplasia. TD is caused by mutations of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptor 3 gene (FGFR3), which result in constitutive activation of the FGFR3 tyrosine kinase. However, the lin

Subpial demyelination in the cerebral cortex of multiple sclerosis patients.

The extent and pattern of demyelination in the cerebral cortex was determined in 78 tissue blocks from the brains of 20 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and 28 tissue blocks from 7 patients without neurological disease. Tissue blocks from 4 predetermined areas (cingulate gyrus, frontal, parietal, and temporal lobe) were studied, irrespective of macroscopically evident MS plaques. All tissue blocks contained cerebral cortex and periventricular and/or subcortical white matter. One hundred and nine demyelinating lesions were detected in the cerebral cortex, of which 92 (84.4%) were purely intraco

The effect of imipramine on lipid peroxidation in the rat cerebral cortex.

The effect of imipramine (IMI) on lipid peroxidation in the rat cerebral cortex was investigated in ex vivo and in vitro study. It was found that IMI when given to rats chronically (14 x 10 mg/kg ip) but not acutely (10 mg/kg ip), inhibited lipid peroxidation in the cortical membranes of rat brain. When added in different concentrations (0.125-10.0 nmoles/sample) to the cerebral cortical membranes of naive rats in vitro, IMI inhibited lipid peroxidation in concentration-dependent fashion. Using [3H]-IMI it was found that employed procedure for membrane preparation did not removed IMI from cort
