Responses of neurons in the middle temporal visual area after long-standing lesions of the primary visual cortex in adult new world monkeys.

The retinotopic organization of the middle temporal visual area (MT) was determined in six adult owl monkeys and one adult marmoset 69 d to 10 months after lesions of the dorsolateral primary visual cortex (V1). The lesions removed were limited to extensive parts of the representation of the lower visual quadrant in V1. Microelectrodes were used to record from neurons at numerous sites in MT to determine whether parts of MT normally devoted to the lower visual quadrant (1) were unresponsive to visual stimuli, (2) acquired responsiveness to inputs from intact portions of V1, or (3) became respo

Axonal regrowth of layer II-III visual-projecting cortical neurons in rats fails beyond eye opening.

Fetal neurons (embryonic age E16) of occipital origin grafted in the visual cortex of albino rats at increasing postnatal stages (P0, P7, P15, P30, P60, P120) can be activated by photic stimulation. Inputs originate from five major areas of the brain ipsilateral to the graft, namely, the claustrum, the periallocortex/proisocortex, the isocortex, the visual thalamus, and some unspecific subthalamic and hypothalamic nuclei. All inputs decrease in number with the age at which grafting was performed. Isocortical afferents exhibit furthermore a progressive laminar shaping. In neonates, layer II-III

Cerebral necrosis following radiotherapy of extracranial neoplasms.

We have examined 6 patients with delayed cerebral necrosis following irradiation of extracranial neoplasms. Four of the 6 patients received 1,760 rets (or less) tumor dose. The initial symptoms attributable to radiation necrosis appeared 4 to 31 months after irradiation and were those of a focal supratentorial mass. Cerebral angiography delineated an avascular frontal or temporal lesion in all 6 patients; in 1 case a magnification study revealed narrowing, irregularity, and occlusion of small cortical vessels. Four of our 6 patients underwent craniotomy with partial or complete surgical extirp

Natural history of global and critical brain ischaemia. Part II: EEG and neurological signs in patients remaining unconscious after cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Of 125 patients who had no detectable cortical activity (DCA) on the electroencephalograph (EEG) immediately upon resuscitation from circulatory arrest of primary cardiovascular aetiology, 88 remained unconscious; these patients had their EEG and neurological status serially investigated until they died. Immediately upon re-establishment of circulation all cerebral functions could be absent; the brain death (irreversible loss of functions) was then signified by the appearance of poikilothermia, diabetes insipidus and reflex extension of the upper limb. Most often, some cranial nerve reflexes w

[Successful urgent thoracotomy in a patient with penetrating heart injury--case report].

The case of a patient with a penetrating cardiac injury successfully treated by thoracotomy is reported. In a suicidal attempt, he suffered a self-inflicted thoracic stub wound penetrating the left ventricle. During transport to the hospital, he developed circulatory instability. He was admitted to the emergency department with no signs of life and bilateral non-responding mydriasis. Immediately, urgent anterolateral thoracotomy at the left 5th rib was performed. The pericardium was opened, cardiac tamponade was evacuated and the stab wound in the right ventricle was sutured. The subsequent ve

[The influence and outcome of acute infantile intracranial hematoma with hypoxemia].

Unusually broad areas of cerebral infarction were demonstrated by CT scan in three head injured infants with acute intracranial hematoma. They revealed very characteristic CT findings including contralateral hemispheric ischemic zone. Case 1 is a 5-month-old boy who had hit his head 4 days before. On admission he was semicomatose and his respiration had suffered from generalized seizures with arterial PO2 value of 43 mmHg. CT scan revealed right subdural hematoma, and bihemispheric ischemic low density was also demonstrable. Hematoma clot weighing 10 grams was removed through emergency craniot

Does dendritic growth underly recovery from neonatal occipital lesions in rats.

Rats were given lesions of visual cortex on postnatal day 4 or 10, or in adulthood. Ninety days later they were trained on a horizontal-vertical stripes discrimination task and a visual-spatial navigation task. None of the operated rats acquired the tasks. The brains were processed for Golgi-Cox staining and dendritic arborization was quantified in the layer III pyramidal cells in somatosensory cortex. Relative to normal control brains, the neurons of the day 4 and adult operates showed a reduction in dendritic branching, whereas the neurons of the day 10 operates had a significant increase in

Exploring arterial anatomy of the internal capsule: an analysis of the deep vascular structures and related white matter pathways.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The internal capsule is supplied by perforators originating from the internal carotid artery, middle cerebral artery, anterior choroidal artery and anterior cerebral artery. The aim of this study is to examine the vascular anatomy of the internal capsule, along with its related white matter anatomy, in order to prevent potential risks and complications during surgical interventions. METHODS: Twenty injected hemispheres prepared according to the Klingler method were dissected. Dissections were photographed at each stage. The findings obtained from the dissections wer

Time-dependent reorganization of the brain components underlying memory retention in trace eyeblink conditioning.

Many studies have confirmed the time-limited involvement of the hippocampus in mnemonic processes and suggested that there is reorganization of the responsible brain circuitry during memory consolidation. To clarify such reorganization, we chose trace classical eyeblink conditioning, in which hippocampal ablation produces temporally graded retrograde amnesia. Here, we extended the temporal characterization of retrograde amnesia to other regions that are involved in acquisition during this task: the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the cerebellum. At a various time interval after establishin

Natural history of global and critical brain ischaemia. Part III: cerebral prognostic signs after cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Cerebral recovery course and rate during the first year after global and critical ischaemia monitored and predicted by EEG and neurological signs.

The monitoring and predictive value of the electroencephalography (EEG) and neurological signs was evaluated in 125 patients who had sustained critical brain ischaemia during circulatory arrest of primary cardiovascular aetiology. Cranial nerve areflexia with mydriasis or extension of the upper limb in response to cutaneous stimulation reliably indicated brain death and appearance of the flexion reflex or of intermittent spikes and sharp waves in the EEG predicted an unfavourable outcome; but other EEG configurations and nuerological signs per se were inaccurate variables to assess the outcome

[Two cases of giant fusiform aneurysm presenting ischemic attacks].

It is said that major clinical sign of giant fusiform aneurysm is so-called mass sign compressing surrounding tissues and ischemic attack caused by the aneurysm is very rare. The authors experienced such uncommon two patients with partially thrombosed fusiform aneurysm who developed ischemic attack. Case 1: A 68-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in semicomatous state with ocular bobbing and decorticate posture of sudden onset. Enhanced CT scans taken at admission showed a presence of homogenously enhanced mass continuing to bilateral posterior cerebral arteries, which compressed the po

The autonomic nervous system and the brainstem: A fundamental role or the background actors for consciousness generation? Hypothesis, evidence, and future directions for rehabilitation and theoretical approaches.

INTRODUCTION: One of the hardest challenges of the third century is to develop theories that could joint different results for a global explanation of human consciousness. Some important theories have been proposed, trying to explain the emergence of consciousness as the result of different progressive changes in the elaboration of information during brain processing, giving particular attention to the thalamocortical system. METHODS: In this article, a summary review of results that highlighted as cerebral cortex could not be so fundamental for consciousness generation is proposed. In detail

Surgery for epilepsy.

Despite important advances in the treatment of epilepsy over the past several decades, many patients remain uncontrolled. Partial complex (psychomotor) seizures are the largest problem, with less than two thirds of patients successfully managed despite optimal medication use. In these situations, various surgical procedures may be helpful, depending on the type of epilepsy, its cerebral location of origin, and the neurologic status of the particular patient. Intensive investigation including EEG and audiovisual monitoring are utilized to evaluate the medically refractory epileptic. In some ins

Spinal Decerebrate-Like Posturing After Brain Death: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Criteria for establishing brain death (BD) require absence of all brainstem-mediated reflexes including motor (ie, decerebrate or decorticate) posturing. A number of spinal cord automatisms may emerge after BD, but occurrence of decerebrate-like spinal reflexes may be particularly problematic; confusion of such stereotypic extension-pronation movements with brain stem reflexes may confound or delay definitive diagnosis of BD. We present a case in which we verified the noncerebral (ie, likely spinal) origin of such decerebrate-like reflexes. METHODS: Case report and systematic re

Hemimegalencephaly and intractable epilepsy: complications of hemispherectomy and their correlations with the surgical technique. A report on 15 cases.

Hemispherectomy is required in most cases of hemimegalencephaly in order to control epilepsy refractory to medical treatment. Although there is a general agreement on the effectiveness of the procedure in controlling the seizure disorder, the choice of the surgical technique is still a subject of debate. In particular, anatomical hemispherectomy is blamed to be associated with a higher incidence of surgical complications, namely hydrocephalus and hemosiderosis, than other less ablative operations such as functional hemispherectomies. A series of 15 children with hemimegalencephaly, who had und

Effects of bilateral ablation or 6-OHDA lesion of the frontal cortex upon the behaviors induced by apomorphine and amphetamine in adult cats.

The main aim of this study was to compare the effects of bilateral 6-OHDA lesion of the prefrontal, frontal and media cerebral cortex, with those of suction ablation of the same areas, upon apomorphine and amphetamine evoked behaviors. Twenty five cats were distributed in four groups: 1) 8 cats received bilateral, injection of 6-OHDA (32 micrograms per hemisphere), and the behaviors elicited by separate injection of apomorphine (2.0 mg/kg s.c.) and amphetamine (2.5 mg/kg s.c.) before and after the lesion were compared; 2) 3 cats received a unilateral injection of 6-OHDA into the cited areas an

The surgical treatment of instability of the upper part of the cervical spine in children and adolescents.

In a retrospective review of the cases of thirteen skeletally immature children and adolescents (four to eighteen years old) with instability of the upper part of the cervical spine (occiput to fifth cervical vertebra), we determined the efficacy of posterior arthrodesis and halo-cast immobilization in the management of this condition. The patients were divided into two groups: those with congenital vertebral anomalies alone (fusion or structural defects, or both) and those with cervical anomalies and systemic disorders (dwarfism, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Down syndrome, and cerebral pals

The pharmacology of N-carbamoyl-2-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)acetamidine hydrochloride (LON-954) a new tremorogenic agent.

The tremorogenic properties of a series of benzylimidoylurea derivatives are described. The most potent member, N-carbamoyl-2-(2,6-dichlorophenyl) acetamidine hydrochloride (LON-954), produces a reproducible, dose-dependent rest tremor in the mouse with oral doses of 5-100 mg/kg which is also seen in other species (rat, cat, dog, rabbit). The tremor is of constant frequency, rapid onset and short duration. It is not accompanied by akinesia, muscle ridigity, antinociceptive activity, parasympathomimetic effects or marked hypothermia and in these respects differs from tremor produced by oxotremo
