A total of 228 low birth weight (less than 1750 g), mechanically ventilated infants with and without periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage were examined at 18 months corrected age to assess the relationship between cranial ultrasonographic findings and specific motor abnormalities. All infants were previously enrolled in a double-blind, randomized, prospective clinical trial of phenobarbital prophylaxis against periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage. Ultrasonographic abnormalities on the scans performed between 7 and 13 days of life were categorized as germinal matrix hemorrhage, la

Over a five-year period we identified 22 term newborns with intracranial hemorrhage by computed tomography in an intensive care unit for newborns. Primary subarachnoid hemorrhage (diffuse or focal) was the most common type of hemorrhage. Diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage was caused either by traumatic delivery or severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and caused seizures on the first day. Focal subarachnoid hemorrhage was associated with cerebral infarction. Intraventricular hemorrhage was always accompanied by bloody CSF. Somewhat more than half the newborns with intraventricular hemorrhage had

Intraventricular hemorrhage long after successful encephaloduroarterio synangiosis (EDAS) is very rare. The effect of revascularization surgery for preventing hemorrhagic event of moyamoya disease remains controversial. We report a 17-year-old female with intracerebral hemorrhage and intraventricular hemorrahge 10 years after successful EDAS. Even though cerebral vessels angiography showed good collateral circulations without specific weak points, a cerebral hemorrhage could occur in patient with ischemic type of moyamoya disease long after successful indirect bypass operations. Good collatera

Myelination of the central nervous system can be demonstrated with magnetic resonance imaging. The influence of periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia on cerebral myelination was studied using magnetic resonance imaging. The subjects were 33 preterm infants of less than 30 weeks' gestation studied at 44 weeks' postmenstrual age: 11 infants with periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage, 7 with periventricular leukomalacia, and 15 without periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage or periventricular leukomalacia. There were no differences in mean gestati

A 32-year-old man presented with subependymoma in the lateral ventricle causing intraventricular hemorrhage and manifesting as severe headache and disturbance of consciousness. Computed tomography on admission showed a massive intraventricular hemorrhage and acute obstructive hydrocephalus. Cerebral angiography revealed no abnormal findings. Emergency external ventricular drainage was performed, and his neurological deficits gradually improved. Magnetic resonance imaging at 5 weeks after admission showed a tumor arising from the septum pellucidum or the floor of the right lateral ventricle, ap

BACKGROUND: The impact of the permissive hypotension approach in clinically well infants on regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO2) and autoregulatory capacity (CAR) remains unknown.
METHODS: Prospective cohort study of blinded rScO2 measurements within a randomized controlled trial of management of hypotension (HIP trial) in extremely preterm infants. rScO2, mean arterial blood pressure, duration of cerebral hypoxia, and transfer function (TF) gain inversely proportional to CAR, were compared between hypotensive infants randomized to receive dopamine or placebo and between hypotensive an

Whether intraventricular hemorrhage increases the risk of adverse developmental outcome among premature infants is controversial. Using brain ultrasound, we identified intraventricular hemorrhage and white matter abnormalities among 1064 infants born before 28 weeks' gestation. We identified adverse developmental outcomes at 24 months of age using a standardized neurologic examination and the Bayley Scales of Infant Development Mental and Motor Scales. In logistic regression models that adjusted for gestational age, sex, and public insurance, isolated intraventricular hemorrhage was associated

We encountered a case of moyamoya disease which exhibited intracerebral hemorrhage with intraventricular hemorrhage followed by cerebral infarction in a short time. A 39-year-old female presenting with sudden onset disturbance of consciousness was admitted to our hospital. Radiological investigation on admission revealed intracerebral hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe and intraventricular hemorrhage due to moyamoya disease. The patient experienced cerebral infarction of the left frontotemporal area with brain swelling after 20 hours had passed. In spite of immediate left frontotemporal cran

Preterm neonates are at risk for neurodevelopmental impairment, especially those with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Cerebral vasospasm (VSP) is a common complication after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in adult population, but it is unknown if preterm neonates with IVH may develop it. We prospectively enrolled premature newborns < 32 weeks with IVH and without IVH. All patients received serial transcranial sonography through the temporal window of the middle cerebral artery, anterior cerebral artery, posterior cerebral artery, and the internal carotid artery with transcranial Doppler sono

AIM: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a slowly progressive bilateral stenocclusive process of the distal internal carotid and proximal portions of the anterior and middle cerebral arteries and the formation of an abnormal vascular network at the base of the brain. The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify clinical features, salient features, radiological features and yield of diagnostic cerebral angiography in MMD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the records of 26 patients with MMD evaluated and treated at our institute from August 2010 until March 2013. Diagnosis of MMD was made on

Moyamoya disease usually manifests as ischemic events in childhood, and as more severe hemorrhagic events, including intraventricular hemorrhage, in adults. Recently, the indication for neuroendoscopic surgery has been extended to cast-formation intraventricular hematomas. However, detailed information about the use of neuroendoscopic surgery for the treatment of intraventricular hemorrhage associated with moyamoya disease has not been reported. We describe two cases of intraventricular hemorrhage with moyamoya disease; one in a 62-year-old and another in a 33-year-old women who both presented

In patients with high-grade atherosclerotic stenosis or occlusion of the extracranial cerebral arteries, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) may occur, potentially due to rupture of fragile dilated pial collateral vessels. This association has been well described in Moyamoya disease. There are only few cases in the literature that reported SAH due to bilateral carotid artery stenosis but intraventricular hemorrhage caused by dilated pial collateral has not been reported yet. We present a case of bilateral carotid artery occlusion presented with intraventricular hemorrhage. Based on the findings in t

BACKGROUND: Primary diffuse leptomeningeal gliomatosis (PDLG) is a lethal neoplasm that is characterized by glioma cells exclusively infiltrating into cerebral and spinal meninges. Intraventricular hemorrhage as an initial symptom in PDLG patient has not been reported in the literatures.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old man initially presented with intraventricular hemorrhage. The patient had an improved outcome at the early stage of hemorrhagic course; however, the clinical condition began to a sudden turn for deterioration with intracranial hypertension and cerebral hernia on day 15 after a

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of cerebral vasospasm in children is challenging because administration of intravenous calcium channel blockers can cause systemic hypotension and worsened cerebral perfusion. Intraventricular nicardipine has been used as an alternative modality for treating vasospasm in adult subarachnoid hemorrhage populations. The literature describing intraventricular calcium channel blocker therapy for pediatric cerebral vasospasm is sparse. The goal of this study was to perform a descriptive, retrospective chart review of all children at our institution who received intraventricular

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Hemorrhage associated with central neurocytoma has been described previously, but never in association with an aneurysm originating from a feeding artery. We present the first reported case of a central neurocytoma in a patient with intraventricular hemorrhage caused by rupture of an aneurysm on a lenticulostriate artery that supplied the tumor.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old man who presented with an intraventricular hemorrhage underwent magnetic resonance imaging and cerebral angiography that disclosed a right lateral intraventricular mass and a 7-mm fusiform

In 168 patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms, the pathology of intracranial hemorrhage visualized on CT was analyzed. Blood in the subarachnoid space could be visualized in 95% of cases within three days after SAH and 75% of 106 cases within two weeks after SAH. In one case blood clot in the subarachnoid space visible up to 13 days after SAH. Concerning the cases within two weeks after the bleeding, intracerebral hematomas were observed in 36% of anterior cerebral aneurysms and middle cerebral aneurysms, 16% of internal carotid aneurysms and none of vetebro-basilar aneurysms. Germinal matrix hemorrhage leading to intraventricular hemorrhage results from an excessive pressure gradient between the blood-vessel lumen and the surrounding brain tissue. This gradient may be caused by increased intravascular pressure or--as this paper hypothesises--by decreased tissue pressure. Brain-tissue pressure depends on water content, and it decreases when water moves out of the brain, as occurs in conditions associated with dehydration, plasma hyperosmolality or hypotension. Such conditions occur frequently in premature infants, which may explain why intraventricular hemorrhage de

BACKGROUND: Studies on the acute management of extremely low birthweight (ELBW) infants reveal a high incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in infants with high-grade internal cerebral vein perfusion waveform fluctuations. In this prospective observational study we investigated the Doppler perfusion waveform fluctuations in the great cerebral vein, straight sinus, and internal cerebral veins of ELBW infants.
METHODS: We evaluated perfusion waveforms after birth every 12 h until 120 h in 73 ELBW infants (<1,000 g) at our hospital. Fluctuations were categorized into four patterns of in
