Cerebral oedema and encephalopathy have been noted to occur frequently in patients severely ill or dying after trauma, ischaemia, infections or even metabolic disorders. The objective of the present study was to establish continuous monitoring of the intracranial pressure (ICP) and sampling of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for further investigations in swine. ICP monitoring was established in eight pigs by using a ventricular drainage system, implemented after paramedian trepanation of the os frontale. CSF and serum samples were taken for measurement of the levels of glucose and protein. Operating

We have carried out a double-blind randomized study of the effect of nalbuphine (0.2 mg.kg-1 i.v.) or placebo on mean lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure, mean cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), transcutaneous PCO2 (tcPCO2), mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), and heart rate (HR) in 10 spontaneously breathing volunteers using invasive CSF pressure measurement. Nalbuphine increased CSF pressure from 9.2 mmHg to 16.4 mmHg and decreased CPP from 83.6 mmHg to 74.4 mmHg without significantly changing tcPCO2, MAP, or heart rate. In the placebo group there were no significant changes in CSF pre

The patency of the cochlear aqueduct is a key factor in intra-cochlear hydromechanics. If patent, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) provides the reference pressure for the perilymph and also to a large extent the endolymph, since Reissner's membrane can only withstand a relatively small pressure differential. The aqueduct often becomes sealed as a natural process of ageing. In this instance the reference pressure is from a source, its position unknown, within the boundaries of the cochlea itself. Relatively large and rapid changes in the cerebrospinal fluid pressure may result from everyday events

Intraosseous pressure (IOP) and cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) in the lumbar region were measured simultaneously in two groups of patients with either spinal canal stenosis or disc herniation, to compare dynamic changes with positional changes, and to learn whether these pressure changes may have some role in the onset of claudication. IOP and CSFP showed almost the same change patterns with positional changes in two groups. They were lowest in the prone position and highest at the standing position. In standing with flexion, they were almost the same as in the prone position, but in exte

OBJECTIVES: The changes of CSF flow dynamics in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) are not fully elucidated. Most previous studies took the whole cardiac cycle as a unit. In this work, it is divided into systole and diastole phase and compared between iNPH patients and normal elderly and paid special attention to the change of netflow direction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty iNPH patients according to international guideline and twenty healthy volunteers were included in this study and examined by MRI. Three categories of CSF flow parameters were measured: peak velocity (Vpeak ),

OBJECTIVES: Increased aqueduct cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow pulsatility and, recently, a reversed CSF flow in the aqueduct have been suggested as hallmarks of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH). However, these findings have not been adequately confirmed. Our objective was to investigate the flow of blood and CSF in INPH, as compared to healthy elderly, in order to clarify which flow parameters are related to the INPH pathophysiology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen INPH patients (73 years) and 35 healthy subjects (72 years) underwent phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MR

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid opening pressure is elevated with central nervous system infection and vasculitis, but has not been studied in inflammatory demyelinating disease. This retrospective study sought to determine whether children with demyelinating disease demonstrate elevated cerebrospinal fluid opening pressure, and to explore possible clinical and radiologic correlates.
METHODS: Pediatric patients with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, multiple sclerosis, or a clinically isolated syndrome (including optic neuritis and transverse myelitis) who had a lumbar puncture within 1 m

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP), as low BMI and low CSFP have recently been described as risk factors for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the electronic medical records of patients who had CSFP measured by lumbar puncture and data to calculate BMI at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN). Exclusion criteria included diagnoses, surgical procedures and medications known to affect CSFP. Mean CSFP for each unit BMI was calculated. The probabilities were two-tailed, and the α level

Giant Tarlov cysts are described as fluid-filled sacs located in the spine. They are mostly found in the sacral region, but are usually asymptomatic. The symptomatic Tarlov cysts are planned for surgical treatment in the form of laminectomy and marsupilisation of cysts. These surgical procedures can have complications like cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, bacterial meningitis, and radiculopathic pain. We report a case of a 30-year-old male who presented with complaints of pain in his left leg for one and half years, urinary incontinence off and on for six months, and scrotal pain for two months

Objectives To determine the proportion of patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) who had a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure >6 cm H2O and to investigate the clinical and imaging variables associated with CSF pressure ( PCSF) in this condition. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 106 patients with SIH. PCSF was measured by lumbar puncture prior to treatment. Clinical and imaging variables - including demographic data, brain imaging results, symptom duration, and abdominal circumference - were collected. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the cor

Twenty-seven patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus were operated upon by a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. Selection for shunt surgery was based on typical symptoms (gait disturbancy, mental deterioration and urgency incontinence) and characteristic changes at cranial computed tomography and/or radionuclide cisternography. Prior to operation a cerebrospinal fluid tap-test (CSF-TT) was performed with measurements of psychometric functions and gait pattern before and after a lumbar puncture of 50 cc CSF. Nineteen patients improved and 5 were unchanged after shunt operation. Three patients cou

A study was made of the effects of antibiotics and corticosteroids on parameters that reflect brain dysfunction and potential neurological damage in experimental pneumococcal meningitis in rabbits. Brain water content was 398 +/- 10 g/100 g dry weight in normal rabbits and 410 +/- 11 g in rabbits after 24 hr of infection (P less than .001). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lactate levels increased from 16.3 +/- 3.4 mg/dl to 69.5 +/- 28.2 mg/dl (P less than .001), and CSF pressure increased by +8.3 +/- 3.6 mm Hg (P less than .005) over the same interval. Antibiotic therapy with ampicillin sterilized C

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure patterns have been reported as one of the most relevant indexes for the diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (INPH). Forty consecutive patients coming from our observations with the classic Hakim's triad underwent continuous CSF pressure monitoring via lumbar puncture for at least 12 hours. Twenty-eight patients were diagnosed as having INPH and underwent CSF shunt. A multi-layer neural network (perceptron) was employed to study the pressure patterns in order to try an alternative classification to the "expert" neurosurgeon

This is a report of changes in blood flow velocity in the carotid system induced by lumbar puncture in five patients who had clinical and neuroradiological signs of normal pressure hydrocephalus. After lowering cerebrospinal fluid pressure an increase of carotid flow velocity was found on Doppler hematotachography. These changes of carotid blood flow velocity could not be demonstrated in a control group of four patients with normal cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. This method is easy to perform, does not overtax the patient and seems to be indicated for the diagnosis of NPH. It is presented as a

It is generally accepted that hydrocephalus is a consequence of the disbalance between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) secretion and absorption which should in turn lead to CSF pressure gradient development and ventricular enlargement. To test CSF pressure gradient role in hydrocephalus development, we experimentally caused CSF system impairment at two sites in cats. In the first group of animals, we caused Sylvian aqueduct obstruction and recorded CSF pressure changes pre and post obstruction at three measuring sites (lateral ventricle -LV, cortical-CSS and lumbar subarachnoid space -LSS) during 15

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) with normal opening cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure comprises a rare IIH variant.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a non-obese Caucasian woman, who presented with asymmetrical papilledema, typical IIH-findings on optic nerve sonography and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and was diagnosed with IIH despite normal opening CSF pressure. Following treatment with acetazolamide, a complete remission of her symptoms was achieved, accompanied by significant improvement of the fundoscopy findings.
CONCLUSION: Although normal openin
