Communications Between the Facial Nerve and the Vestibulocochlear Nerve, the Glossopharyngeal Nerve, and the Cervical Plexus.

The aim of this review is to elucidate the communications between the facial nerves or facial nerve and neighboring nerves: the vestibulocochlear nerve, the glossopharyngeal nerve, and the cervical plexus. In a PubMed search, 832 articles were searched using the terms "facial nerve and communication." Sixty-two abstracts were read and 16 full-text articles were reviewed. Among them, 8 articles were analyzed. The frequency of communication between the facial nerve and the vestibulocochlear nerve was the highest (82.3%) and the frequency of communication between the facial nerve and the glossophar

Additional vascular compression of the brachial plexus in a cadaver with a cervical rib: case illustration.

Cervical ribs are uncommon and occur in approximately 0.5-1% of the population. The authors describe a cadaver found to have a cervical rib with further compression by the dorsal scapular artery. This vessel originated from the third portion of the subclavian artery. No other anomalies were found in this specimen. The authors speculate that some cases of symptomatic cervical rib may have an additional vector of compression from a dorsal scapular artery when it arises from the third portion of the subclavian artery. Additional studies aimed at the vascular system may be useful in diagnosis and

Decompression of Ludwig's angina in a pregnant patient under bilateral superficial cervical plexus block.

Ludwig's angina is defined as a potentially lethal, rapidly spreading cellulitis, involving the sublingual and submandibular spaces, and is manifested by a brawny suprahyoid induration, tender swelling in the floor of the mouth, and elevation and posterior displacement of the tongue. During a life-threatening infection such as Ludwig's angina, the mother and foetus are vulnerable to septicemia and asphyxia. We describe a case of decompression of Ludwig's angina in a 28 weeks pregnant patient under bilateral superficial cervical plexus block. The block, coupled with bilateral mandibular nerve b

Dose delivered to the lumbosacral plexus from high-dose-rate brachytherapy for cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To calculate dose delivered to the lumbosacral plexus (LSP) with cervical brachytherapy using 3-dimensional imaging, and to compare this with the position of the tandem in the pelvis using bony landmarks. We also report long-term LSP toxicity outcomes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Treatment planning images from 55 patients treated with tandem and ring brachytherapy from October 2009 through November 2012 were reviewed. The LSP was contoured on planning computed tomographic scans to calculate dose received. Lumbosacral plexus dose was studied as a function of tandem distance from the sacr

Superficial Cervical Plexus Block and Quality of Recovery after Thyroidectomy: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Whether adding a bilateral superficial cervical plexus block to a thyroidectomy enhanced recovery pathway improves postoperative quality of recovery remains uncertain. METHODS: In a single-center prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in adults undergoing thyroidectomy with general anesthesia, participants were randomized to bilateral superficial cervical plexus blocks with 0.25% bupivacaine or saline. All participants received multimodal analgesia with dexamethasone, acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and incisional local anesthetic. The

Superficial Cervical Plexus Block for Postoperative Pain Management in Occipital Craniotomies: A Narrative Review.

Post-craniotomy pain is common yet often sub-optimally managed because systemic opioids can obscure postoperative neurologic examinations. The superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) has, therefore, emerged as a targeted regional anesthesia option for occipital craniotomies. The SCPB targets the C2-C4 nerves to anesthetize the occipital scalp region, covering the lesser occipital nerve territory that lies within typical posterior scalp incisions. Clinical evidence shows the block is effective in reducing acute postoperative pain after occipital craniotomy and diminishes opioid requirements. S

Respiratory dysfunction in whiplash associated disorders (WAD) with cervical plexus syndrome - A case report.

Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD) represents a chronic post-traumatic pain syndrome from indirect flexion-extension trauma to the neck. The condition exhibits significant variability among affected individuals and can involve numerous secondary symptoms, including but not limited to myalgia, central sensitization, migraines, photophobia, jaw pain, dysphagia, joint stiffness, and tinnitus, while significant breathing problems are not commonly associated with or prominently considered in WAD. Herein, we present the diagnosis and successful surgical treatment of severe respiratory dysfunction a

A Case Series: Ultrasound-Guided Superficial Cervical Plexus Nerve Block For Musculoskeletal Neck Pain.

BACKGROUND: The ultrasound-guided superficial cervical plexus nerve block (SCPNB) is a well-established technique for analgesia for surgical procedures involving the anterolateral neck and it has been increasingly used in the emergency department (ED) for several indications such as neck abscesses, clavicle fractures, and auricular laceration repair. There is, however, limited evidence for its use in patients presenting to the ED with musculoskeletal neck pain. METHODS: This is a case series of 5 patients who presented to the ED with neck pain and were diagnosed with either musculoskeletal ne

Effect of Ropivacaine in Combined Costoclavicular Brachial Plexus - Cervical Plexus Blocks on Hemidiaphragmatic Paralysis for Humeral Fracture Surgery: A Prospective Single - Centre Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The brachial plexus block is conducive to providing postoperative analgesia for patients with humeral fractures. The commonly used brachial plexus block techniques have a high incidence rate of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis (HDP), which may lead to respiratory problems. The combined costoclavicular brachial plexus - cervical plexus blocks (CCB-CPBs) had demonstrated favorable analgesic effects and had reduced the incidence of HDP in shoulder surgeries. However, the clinical experience regarding CCB-CPBs is rather limited. Consequently, our study aims to evaluate its various effects,

A study of neck and shoulder morbidity following neck dissection: The benefits of cervical plexus preservation.

We conducted a study to evaluate the hypothesis that the preservation of cervical root branches of the cervical plexus is associated with greater shoulder mobility, less loss of face and neck sensation, and better quality of life (QoL) following functional neck dissection in which the spinal accessory nerve is spared. We also investigated the impact of postoperative physiotherapy on these three outcomes. Our study population was made up of 54 patients-47 men and 7 women, aged 34 to 78 years (mean: 53.4)-who had undergone functional neck dissection as a treatment for head and neck cancer over a

The ultrasound-guided superficial cervical plexus block for anesthesia and analgesia in emergency care settings.

The ultrasound-guided superficial cervical plexus (SCP) block may be useful for providers in emergency care settings who care for patients with injuries to the ear, neck, and clavicular region, including clavicle fractures and acromioclavicular dislocations. The SCP originates from the anterior rami of the C1-C4 spinal nerves and gives rise to 4 terminal branches--greater auricular, lesser occipital, transverse cervical, and suprascapular nerves--that provide sensory innervation to the skin and superficial structures of the anterolateral neck and sections of the ear and shoulder. Here we descr

Ventral root avulsions of the cat spinal cord at the brachial plexus level (cervical 7).

The ventral cervical 7th root was avulsed from the surface of the cat spinal cord, and studied using light microscopical stainings (Nissl, acetylcholinesterase and antibodies against neurofilament and glial fibrillary acidic protein) after different survival times. After two days the density of the neurofilament increased in the neurons in the ventral horn of the avulsed ventral root. Changes in the rough endoplasmatic reticulum (Nissl and acetylcholinesterase) started four days postoperatively, and were confirmed electron microscopically. The glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive structure

Comparative efficacy of cervical erector spinae plane block and superficial cervical plexus block for postoperative analgesia in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: A prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a commonly performed procedure for cervical disc disease; however, significant postoperative pain may hinder recovery and increase opioid consumption. This study compared the efficacy of cervical erector spinae plane block (cESPB) and superficial cervical plexus block (sCPB) techniques in ACDF. METHODS: This prospective, randomized study included American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class I-II patients aged 18 to 65 years who underwent ACDF surgery for cervical (C)5-C6 or C6-C7 disc disease. Patients were randomly assigned t

[Cervical plexus block as an alternative anesthetic approach for type I thyroplasty: a case report].

BACKGROUND: The role of type I thyroplasty (TIP) is well established as the treatment for glottal insufficiency due to vocal fold paralysis, but the ideal anesthetic management for this procedure is still largely debated. We present the case of a novel anesthetic approach for TIP using combined intermediate and superficial Cervical Plexus Block (CPB) and intermittent mild sedation analgesia. CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old presenting with left vocal fold paralysis and obstructive sleep apnea was scheduled for TIP. An ultrasound-guided intermediate CPB was performed using the posterior approach, an
