Tension pneumothorax in small odontocetes.

Pneumothorax, the accumulation of air in the pleural cavity, occurs when air enters the pleural space by the pleuro-cutaneous, pleuro-pulmonary, or pleuro-oesophageal-mediastinal route. Tension pneumothorax is an infrequent and severe form of pneumothorax where a positive pressure in the pleural space is built up during at least part of the respiratory cycle, with compression of both lungs and mediastinal vessels, and, if unilateral, with midline deviation towards the unaffected hemithorax. We describe 9 cases of tension pneumothorax in 3 species of small cetaceans (striped dolphin Stenella co

Potential biases in dietary interpretation derived from stable isotope analysis of small dolphin teeth.

We analyzed δ13C and δ15N values in different tooth portions (Growth Layer Groups, GLGs) of franciscanas, Pontoporia blainvillei, to investigate their effect on whole tooth (WT) isotopic values and the implications for dietary estimates. Tooth portions included the dentin deposited during the prenatal development (PND), the first year of life (GLG1) deposited during the nursing period and the central part of the tooth with no distinction amongst subsequent GLGs (Center). Isotopic mixing models estimating the contribution of PND, GLG1 and Center to WT showed that GLG1 has a strong effect on WT

Evolutionary assembly and disassembly of the mammalian sternum.

Evolutionary transitions are frequently associated with novel anatomical structures,1 but the origins of the structures themselves are often poorly known. We use developmental, genetic, and paleontological data to demonstrate that the therian sternum was assembled from pre-existing elements. Imaging of the perinatal mouse reveals two paired sternal elements, both composed primarily of cells with lateral plate mesoderm origin. Location, articulations, and development identify them as homologs of the interclavicle and the sternal bands of synapsid outgroups. The interclavicle, not previously rec

Review of the cetacean nose: form, function, and evolution.

The cetacean nose presents a unique suite of anatomical modifications. Key among these is posterior movement of the external nares from the tip of the rostrum to the top of the head. Concomitant with these anatomical changes are functional changes including the evolution of echolocation in odontocetes, and reduction of olfaction in Neoceti (crown odontocetes and mysticetes). Anatomical and embryological development of the nose in crown cetaceans is reviewed as well as their functional implications. A sequence of evolutionary transformations of the nose is proposed in the transition from a terr

A review of Brucella infection in marine mammals, with special emphasis on Brucella pinnipedialis in the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata).

Brucella spp. were isolated from marine mammals for the first time in 1994. Two novel species were later included in the genus; Brucella ceti and Brucella pinnipedialis, with cetaceans and seals as their preferred hosts, respectively. Brucella spp. have since been isolated from a variety of marine mammals. Pathological changes, including lesions of the reproductive organs and associated abortions, have only been registered in cetaceans. The zoonotic potential differs among the marine mammal Brucella strains. Many techniques, both classical typing and molecular microbiology, have been utilised

Ultrastructure of synapses and golgi analysis of neurons in neocortex of the lateral gyrus (visual cortex) of the dolphin and pilot whale.

Qualitative and computerized quantitative analyses of ultrastructural features of synapses in different layers of the primary visual cortex in the dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) and the pilot whale (Globicephala melaena) were carried out. Also, Golgi and cytoarchitectonic analyses were performed in the same species of cetaceans and, additionally, in Tursiops truncatus and Phocaena phocaena. It was found that on a synaptic level, as well as in cytoarchitectonic and Golgi features, the neocortex of cetaceans combines evolutionary progressive features and conservative features with a marked prev

Baleen wear reveals intraoral water flow patterns of mysticete filter feeding.

A survey of macroscopic and microscopic wear patterns in the baleen of eight whale species (Cetacea: Mysticeti) discloses structural, functional, and life history properties of this neomorphic keratinous tissue, including evidence of intraoral water flow patterns involved in filter feeding. All baleen demonstrates wear, particularly on its medial and ventral edges, as flat outer layers of cortical keratin erode to reveal horn tubes, also of keratin, which emerge as hair-like fringes. This study quantified five additional categories of specific wear: pitting of plates, scratching of plates, scu

Molecular typing divides marine mammal strains of Brucella into at least three groups with distinct host preferences.

In order to investigate the genetic relationships within Brucella isolated from marine mammals, two genome-based typing methods, variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) typing and multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA), were applied to a selection of 74 marine mammal isolates. All isolates were examined by VNTR and data were compared with multilocus sequencing data from a subset of 48 of these. Marine mammal brucellae are distinct from classically recognized species by these methods and appear to correspond to three major genetic groups, which reflect distinct preferred hosts. One group contains

Commentary on the Adaptive Significance of Sociality Around Parturition Events, and Conspecific Support of Parturient Females in Some Social Mammals.

In recent decades, it has become apparent that during parturition events in a number of social mammals, social support behaviours from group mates can be directed to parturient females (and their newborn neonates). Such behaviour has been documented in diverse taxa, across non-human primates, Elephantidae, Cetacea, and Chiroptera, living in a range of social group organisations, from matrilineal groups to cooperatively breeding groups and multi-male, multi-female groups. Since sociality, in association with parturition, has been demonstrated to confer several health benefits to human mothers a

Analysis and prediction of ground deformation in Yinxi Industrial Park based on time-series InSAR technology.

Monitoring ground deformation in industrial parks is of great importance for the economic development of urban areas. However, limited research has been conducted on the deformation mechanism in industrial parks, and there is a lack of integrated monitoring and prediction models. Therefore, this study proposes a comprehensive monitoring and prediction model for industrial parks, utilizing time-series Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology and the Whale Optimization Algorithm-Back Propagation (WOA-BP) neural network algorithm. Taking Yinxi Industrial Park in Baiyin District

Craniodental ecomorphology of the large Jurassic ichthyosaurian Temnodontosaurus.

Marine amniotes have played many crucial roles in ocean ecosystems since the Triassic, including predation at the highest trophic levels. One genus often placed into this guild is the large Early Jurassic neoichthyosaurian Temnodontosaurus, the only post-Triassic ichthyosaurian known with teeth which bear a distinct cutting edge or carina. This taxonomically problematic genus is currently composed of seven species which show a wide variety of skull and tooth morphologies. Here we assess the craniodental disparity in Temnodontosaurus using a series of functionally informative traits. We describ

Postnatal development of diving physiology: implications of anthropogenic disturbance for immature marine mammals.

Marine mammals endure extended breath-holds while performing active behaviors, which has fascinated scientists for over a century. It is now known that these animals have large onboard oxygen stores and utilize oxygen-conserving mechanisms to prolong aerobically supported dives to great depths, while typically avoiding (or tolerating) hypoxia, hypercarbia, acidosis and decompression sickness (DCS). Over the last few decades, research has revealed that diving physiology is underdeveloped at birth. Here, I review the postnatal development of the body's oxygen stores, cardiorespiratory system and

Toxoplasma gondii in cetaceans of Brazil: a histopathological and immunohistochemical survey.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. In cetaceans, T. gondii infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Despite the worldwide range and broad cetacean host record of T. gondii infection, there is limited information on toxoplasmosis in cetaceans from the Southern hemisphere. We investigated the occurrence of T. gondii by histopathology and immunohistochemistry in tissue samples of 185 animals comprising 20 different cetacean species from Brazil. Three out of 185 (1.6%) animals presented T. gondii-associated lesions: a captive killer

Hodgkin's disease in a killer whale (Orcinus orca).

Hodgkin's disease (HD) is reported in a killer whale (Orcinus orca). Generalized lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly were noted at necropsy and histopathological examination revealed diffuse proliferation of atypical large cells with huge eosinophilic nucleoli. They were often multinucleated, and binucleated forms characteristic of Sternberg-Reed cells of human HD were occasionally present. There was no cytological atypia in the background lymphocytes. Thus, the lesion was identified as analogous to HD in man. To our knowledge, this is the first recorded case of HD in the killer whale.
