Human embryonic stem cells can replicate indefinitely while maintaining their undifferentiated state and, therefore, are immortal in culture. It is now well recognized that the presence of early pregnancy factor (EPF) can signify the occurrence of fertilization, continuation of pregnancy and the existence of a viable embryo. With this in view, a study was undertaken to observe the potential of EPF as a marker in assessing embryo viability in cases complicated with vaginal bleeding during early pregnancy. The binding of EPF to lymphocytes stimulates the release of soluble mediators, active in T cell dependent reactions, namely the rosette inhibition test and the adoptive transfer of contact sensitivity. On the basis of their ability to inhibit the delayed type hypersensitivity reaction in this latter assay, they have been classified as suppressor factors. Two patients with a trophoblastic tumour (one with an invasive mole and one with a choriocarcinoma) had early pregnancy factor (EPF; detected by rosette inhibition test) in serum. In both cases the EPF already disappeared during surgery which suggests that EPF could be a useful and sensitive tumour marker if laboratory technology for its detection could be improved.

BACKGROUND: Heat shock proteins (HSP) might be useful as biomarkers for bipolar disorder (BD) which would be clinically valuable since no reliable biomarker for BD has so far been identified. The purpose of this study was to assess the heat shock proteins CPN10, CPN60, and CPN70 as potential biomarkers of BD.
METHODS: The study included 100 BD patients recruited from a hospital during 2012 and 2013. The study also included 94 healthy controls. Among the BD patients, 33 had abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. Blood samples were obtained from the patients and controls.

PROBLEM: A discrepancy exists between the apparently normal ovulation and the pregnancy rates in women treated with clomiphene citrate (CC). Our previous studies have indicated that immuno-suppressive "early pregnancy factor" (EPF) is a novel marker to detect subclinical embryonic loss in infertile women.

PURPOSE: This study measured serum early pregnancy factor (EPF) in pregnant red deer (Cervus elaphus) and ascertained whether EPF synthesis is associated with implantation.
