Health literacy and health-related quality of life in patients with anorectal malformations: A comparison between a charity hospital in Honduras and a tertiary care center in the United States.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: We conduct an annual medical mission to Hospital Ruth Paz para Niños Quemados y Cirugía Pediátrica in Honduras to operate on cases of anorectal malformations (ARM). To improve our knowledge of these patients, we compared their health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and the health literacy of their caregivers from this hospital and ours in the United States. METHODS: The BRIEF Health Literacy Screen (BHLS) and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL) were used, respectively, to assess the health literacy and HRQoL of their guardians. All patients scheduled for an A

A Clinical Study of 2253 Cases of Primary and Secondary Defects Associated With Non-Syndromic Orofacial Clefts in Somalia: The First Report of Charity Operation by the Bela Risu Foundation in Somalia.

Cleft lip and/or palate deformities impose a significant burden on families, particularly in low-income communities. Somalia, characterized by an under-resourced healthcare system, encounters unique healthcare challenges from other regions. These challenges complicate the management and treatment of cleft lip and/or palate, highlighting the need for tailored healthcare strategies to address the specific needs of this population. However, a comprehensive understanding of the patterns and distribution of these deformities in Somalia remains limited. This retrospective cross-sectional study analy

Generosity during the COVID-19 pandemic: The role of collective narcissism.

This study analyzes how a novel psychological factor-collective narcissism-affects giving behavior to national and international charities during the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that collective narcissists tended to keep more resources for themselves or national charities while giving less to international charities. In line with the group threat theory, this tendency is more pronounced in countries with a high share of foreign population. Our findings suggest that the shared experience of the global COVID-19 public health crisis did not blur the boundaries between ingroups and outgroups for c

Increasing Medicaid clients' access to care. Church, state, and private providers collaborate.

Medicaid clients often have difficulty obtaining a physician referral and thus seek treatment for nonemergent conditions in hospital emergency rooms. A committee with representatives from Alexian Brothers Health System, Inc., Elk Grove Village, IL, and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Rolling Meadows, IL, has collaborated with six other organizations to put an end to this misuse of the healthcare system in Chicago's northwest suburbs. Catholic Charities Physician Referral Service came about as the result of research conducted by the committee which indicated that persons on pu

Special report on taxation. Prepare for impending legislation that could threaten your tax-exempt status!

With impending federal action, and the likelihood of "copycat" legislation at the state and local levels if a federal statue is adopted, nonprofit hospitals need to ensure that they will be in compliance if a mandatory charity care bill were to become law. Such facilities should take the initiative now, by clearly articulating their charity care policies and by describing their other undercompensated or uncompensated activities that are maintained in order to benefit their communities. They should also ensure that all of their activities that could be counted as charity care or community benef

Sustaining cooperation through self-sorting: The good, the bad, and the conditional.

In four public-good game experiments, we study self-sorting as a means to facilitate cooperation in groups. When individuals can choose to join groups precommitted to charity, such groups sustain cooperation toward the group's local public good. By eliciting subjects' conditional contribution profiles, we find that subjects who prefer the charity groups have higher average conditional contribution levels but do not differ with respect to the slope of their profiles. The majority of subjects in both group types are conditional cooperators whose willingness to contribute is stimulated by generou

[Infamous rooms or: the dead birds of Lyon. The accomodation of sick men about the year 1800, befor the establishment of a pavilion system].

The contribution follows an architectural perspective on the history of hospitals that are conceptualised as locations of Christian charity. It goes into the German, Italian, and especially into the French developments, and it identifies three types of hospitals in 18th century: That of Christian charity, the military lazaretto, and the new prototypes of modem clinics. Furthermore three technical types are identified, according to the ventilation of the ,machines a guérir' (Tenon): the partial system, the central system, and the technical system.

The behavioral and neural signatures of distinct conceptions of fairness.

Adhering to standard procedures (impartiality), returning favors (reciprocity) or giving based on individuals' needs (charity) may all be considered moral and/or fair ways to allocate resources. However, these allocation behaviors may be perceived as differently motivated, and their moral evaluation may make different demands on theory of mind (ToM) - the capacity to process information about mental states, including motives. In Studies 1 and 2, we examined participants' moral judgments of allocations based on (1) impartiality, (2) reciprocity, (3) charity and (4) unspecified criteria as depic

State-Funded Health Insurance Expansion for Noncitizen Immigrants and Hospital Uncompensated Care.

IMPORTANCE: Undocumented and many noncitizen immigrants are largely excluded from federally funded health insurance programs, creating substantial gaps in health coverage and financial strain on safety-net hospitals that disproportionately serve these populations through uncompensated care. Several states have implemented state-funded health coverage expansions for immigrants, but the financial implications of these policies remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether Health Benefits for Immigrant Seniors (HBIS) and Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults (HBIA) programs in Illinois

Longitudinal reciprocal associations between volunteering, health and well-being: evidence for middle-aged and older adults in Europe.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence on the importance of voluntary activities for the health of middle-aged and older adults. Evidence on the effects of health and well-being on volunteering is more limited. This study examines reciprocal longitudinal associations between voluntary and/or charity activities and 21 indicators related to physical health, well-being, cognitive impairment and daily life functioning among middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: Longitudinal data were collected between 2011 and 2020 from a sample of 19 821 middle-aged and older adults from 15 countries partici

Doing good feels better: Moral appeals shape reward-related neural activity for pro-environmental gains.

To address societal challenges - such as combating climate change - people have to invest in collective goals rather than pursuing selfish objectives. However, prior neuroscientific research has often revealed that reward-motivation is enhanced for self-relevant gains. Here, we draw on social psychological research showing that people have a strong desire to be moral, to examine whether the motivation for investing effort toward collective goals can be increased by appealing to people's desire to be a morally responsible person. We conducted an ERP study examining how a moral appeal influences

Impact of outpatient pharmacist dispensing in an opioid use disorder clinic.

BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder are effective in reducing opioid deaths, but access can be an issue. Relocating an outpatient pharmacist for weekly buprenorphine dispensing in an outpatient clinic may facilitate coverage for buprenorphine and mitigate access and counseling barriers. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate whether staffing an outpatient resident pharmacist to dispense in the buprenorphine clinic had a positive impact on (1) mean cost per prescription charged to charity care and (2) basic elements of patient satisfaction with the on-site pharmacist. METHODS: P

[The epidemic and prevention of plagues in modern Shanghai].

It was found that a variety of plagues were prevalent in Shanghai at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, by analysing and synthesising the epidemic situation, the causes of the epidemic, the social impact, and prevention and control measures. These plagues led to serious social harm and economic losses. Their causes were believed closely related to some factors, such as urban environment, population flow, and climate changes. Their prevention appeared to be applicable and effective. The Shanghai concession and Chinese authorities organised society to fight a

Access to eye care and support services among adults from minority ethnic communities living with visual impairment in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increased risk of certain eye conditions which can lead to visual impairment (V.I.), there is evidence of a greater delay to treatment-seeking among adults from minority ethnic communities (MEC). MEC adults may also be underrepresented on V.I. registers, within early intervention services, and among the beneficiaries of national V.I. charities. However, much of this evidence is outdated or anecdotal. METHODS: This secondary analysis of V.I. Lives survey data explored use of eye health and support services and mobility aids among a matched control sample of 77 MEC and 77

Simulation Training Approach for Cleft Lip and Palate Repair in Low-Income Countries.

BACKGROUND: During periods of civil strife, the need for trauma care and lack of sufficient cleft surgeons causes an increase in children left untreated with cleft lip and palate deformities. During the Syrian war, some cleft care was provided through visiting charities, with surgeries performed both in Syria and neighboring countries. There is a need to increase the number of adequately trained cleft surgeons available in such regions so that care can be achieved beyond mission trips. METHODOLOGY: Cleft lip and palate repair workshops were delivered to 50 doctors in Syria. Pre-workshop, trai
