Chemically Engineered Micro/Nanostructures on Additively Manufactured 316L Stainless Steel and CuCrZr Copper Alloys for Enhanced Boiling.

Recent advances in surface micro/nanostructuring techniques have enabled efficient two-phase cooling. With the growing adoption of metal additive manufacturing (AM) in thermal hardware, it is critical to establish scalable micro/nanostructuring strategies tailored to AM alloys, whose altered surface chemistry, composition, and grain boundaries differ significantly from their conventional counterparts. In this study, by elucidating the interplay between bubble nucleation characteristics and microstructural length scales, we develop and optimize facile and highly scalable surface structuring tec

Physical and chemical characteristics of soot particles from GDI engines: Roles of fuels, lubricants, and transient driving cycles.

Particulate matter emissions from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines have become a growing environmental and health concern due to their ultrafine particle sizes, high reactivity, and potential toxicity. As global emission regulations become increasingly stringent, a deeper understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of GDI soot is critical for developing effective control strategies, particularly in optimizing gasoline particulate filter (GPF) performance. This review investigates the physical and chemical properties of soot particles emitted from GDI engines, focusing on

Determination of Chemical Irritation Potential Using a Defined Gene Signature Set on Tissue-Engineered Human Skin Equivalents.

There are no physical or visual manifestations that define skin sensitivity or irritation; a subjective diagnosis is made on the basis of the evaluation of clinical presentations, including burning, prickling, erythema, and itching. Adverse skin reaction in response to topically applied products is common and can limit the use of dermatological or cosmetic products. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of human skin equivalents based on immortalized skin keratinocytes and evaluate the potential of a 22-gene panel in combination with multivariate analysis to discriminate between ch

Chemical and cell toxicity properties of particulate matter emitted from a diesel engine fueled with biodiesel and ethanol blends.

This study investigates the impact of renewable fuels, specifically three types of biodiesels along with ethanol on the chemical and cell toxicity properties of particulate matter (PM) released from a diesel engine compared to pure diesel. By blending 10 % (by volume) of grape seed biodiesel, spent coffee biodiesel, and eucalyptus oil with diesel, three biodiesel blends (DGs10, DC10, and DEu10, respectively) are produced and subsequently tested. Additionally, an ethanol blend comprising 9 % ethanol and 1 % biodiesel (used as a stabilizer for the blend) is evaluated. The PM compositions from th

Thermal and chemical exhaust gas recirculation potential of punnai oil biodiesel-fuelled diesel engine for environmental sustainability.

Major energy production all over the world depends on fossil fuels. Recent research on alternative energy sources has raised major concerns about environmental impacts, future availability, and cost. Pollution from diesel engines also affects the environment negatively. As a result, there is a worldwide concern about reducing the pollutants emitted by diesel engines. In comparison to diesel fuel, biodiesel combustion produces reduced carbon monoxide (CO2) and unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions but higher nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The current study aims to investigate the thermal and ch

Interfacial engineering of a "soft-hard" layer interface via cardanol-mediated chemical interlocking for high-performance soundproofing multilayer PLA-based composite foams.

The inherent brittleness of polylactic acid (PLA) restricts expand its functional applications. This study innovatively constructs a sustainable multilayer composite PLA-based foam featuring a "soft-hard" layer interface. The high-toughness polypropylene carbonate (PPC) was employed into the PLA matrix to regulate macromolecular chain mobility and form new covalent bonds, successfully reducing crystallinity from 50.87% to 20.94%. The 30 wt% PPC/PLA composite foam with optimized the melt index achieved 4.52 × 106 cells/cm3 of high cell density and uniform cell structure by the supercritical car

Polarization Engineering and Chemical Bond Reconstruction in Rare-Earth Hexagonal Manganite via Fe3+-Occupied B-Site Doping for Piezocatalytic Therapy and Ferroptosis.

Piezocatalytic therapy has emerged as a noninvasive therapeutic strategy. However, its therapeutic effect is limited by the low separation efficiency of carriers (electrons and holes) in piezoelectric materials. Rare-earth hexagonal manganite materials might be good candidates for efficient piezocatalytic therapy because of their high piezoelectric response, Curie temperature, and relatively narrow optical bandgaps. Herein, we report the design of a rare-earth hexagonal manganite material [iron (Fe)-doped yttrium manganite (YMnO3) nanoparticles (YMnO3:Fe NPs)] for piezocatalytic therapy. The i

Scalable, Universal In Situ Self-Heating Chemical Vapor Deposition Strategy for High-Quality Thick Turbostratic Graphene via Combined Twist-Tilt Configuration Engineering.

High-quality, thick turbostratic graphene offers a promising route to robust, reliable applications while retaining monolayer-like properties. However, its preparation remains challenging, particularly in controlling interlayer configurations and maintaining the quality at high thickness. Herein, an in situ self-heating CVD strategy is developed, realizing simultaneous combined control over twist-tilt interlayer configurations in high-quality, thick graphene. A rapid thermal period stabilizes turbostratic twist stacking by suppressing metastable-to-stable transformation into AB-stacking around

Entropy-Engineered High-Entropy Spinel Oxides with Balanced Lattice Oxygen Reactivity for Efficient Chemical Looping Toluene Reforming.

Chemical looping reforming (CLR) is a promising route for converting biomass and its derivatives into syngas. However, its application is hindered by the trade-off between fuel conversion and syngas selectivity, largely governed by the lattice oxygen activity of the oxygen carrier (OC). Herein, we propose an entropy engineering strategy to regulate lattice oxygen activity using a high-entropy spinel oxide, Cr0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Mg0.2Fe2O4 (HEO). The high-entropy configuration induces lattice distortion and multimetallic synergy, reconstructing the oxygen coordination environment and shifting the

Chemical and Mechanical Synergistic Modulation for Engineered Tumor Cells Enables High-Performance Biomimetic Detection of Circulating Tumor Cells.

Although the idea of employing cell membrane biomimetic technologies for detecting circulating tumor cells (CTCs) promises paradigm-shifting advances in cancer diagnostics, its wide application is restricted by CTCs phenotypic variations. Current improvements primarily focus on optimizing biomimetic coatings to enhance capture efficiency, but there remains a significant gap between existing strategies and the practical demands of CTCs detection. Herein, a novel method considering the perspective of tumor cell modification was proposed, which involved concurrently modulating cellular chemical a

Physico-chemical features and membranolytic activity of dust from low or no crystalline silica engineered stone with implications for toxicological assessment.

The re-emergence of silicosis among engineered stone (ES) workers has prompted the development of low- to no-crystalline silica (SiO2) ES products, marketed as safer alternatives to traditional high-SiO2 ES. However, the composition of these new materials-often incorporating recycled minerals, binders, and pigments-remains complex and poorly characterized in terms of potential health risks. This study assessed the physico-chemical properties and membranolytic activity of dusts generated by mechanical processing of five ES samples (ranging from 90 to 0 wt% SiO2) and a natural stone as compariso

Chemical characterization of combustion engine exhaust and assessment of helicopter deck operator occupational exposures on an offshore frigate class ship.

Diesel engine exhaust (DE) consists of a complex mixture of gases and aerosols, originating from sources such as engines, turbines, and power generators. It is composed of a wide range of toxic compounds ranging from constituents that are irritating to those that are carcinogenic. The purposes of this work were to characterize DE originating from different engine types on a ship operating offshore and to quantify the potential exposure of workers on the ship's helicopter deck to select DE compounds. Sampling was conducted on a Norwegian Nansen-class frigate that included helicopter operations.

Chemically engineering the drug release rate of a PEG-paclitaxel conjugate using click and steric hindrance chemistries for optimal efficacy.

A small molecule drug with poor aqueous solubility can be conjugated to a hydrophilic polymer like poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to form an amphiphilic polymer-drug conjugate that self-assembles to form nanoparticles (NPs) with improved solubility and enhanced efficacy. This strategy has been extensively applied to improve the delivery of several small molecule drugs. However, very few reports have succeeded to tune the rate of drug release from these NPs. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of utilizing click and steric hindrance chemistry to modulate the drug release of se

Engineered nanofiber scaffolds prime chromatin reorganization to sensitize cells for long-term and low-dose chemical hazard detection.

Fast and early detection of low-dose chemical toxicity is a critical unmet need in toxicology and human health, as conventional 2D culture models often fail to capture subtle cellular responses induced by sub-toxic exposures. Here, we present a bioengineered three-dimensional (3D) electrospun nanofibrous scaffold composed of polycaprolactone that enhances chromatin accessibility and primes fibroblasts for improved sensitivity to low-dose chemical stimuli in a short period. The scaffold mimics the extracellular matrix, providing topographical cues that reduce cytoskeletal tension and promote nu

Atomic Engineering of a FeFe Dual Single-Atom Nanozyme for Enhanced Peroxidase-like Activities To Build Chemical Tongue for Discrimination of Aromatic Amines.

Single-atom nanozymes have made important progress in the field of sensors, but their catalytic performance as natural enzyme substitutes is far from satisfactory. We describe here a FeFe dual single-atom nanozyme (Fe2N6/CN) with a Fe loading of 0.89 wt %, and it shows a synergistic effect and a peroxidase (POD)-like activity. Especially, the Fe2N6/CN nanozyme shows an excellent specific activity (315.4 U μmol-1). The values of catalytic rate constant (kcat) and catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) for the Fe2N6/CN with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) are 23.8 s-1 and 8.24 × 104 M-1 s-1, respec

Ion-Selective Transport via Nanoconfined Differential Interfacial Friction in a Dielectric-Engineered Covalent Organic Framework With Sectionalized Chemical Environments.

Developing solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) that concurrently deliver high ionic conductivity, excellent ion selectivity, and robust electrochemical/thermal stability remains a central challenge for safe, high-energy-density solid-state batteries (SSBs). Here, an all-solid-state covalent organic framework electrolyte with sectionalized chemical environments (SCE-COF) is reported, constructed via nanoconfined copolymerization of a highly dielectric monomer within COF nanochannels. The resulting architecture affords a nano-confined molecular interface that integrates electron-rich polar short cha

Biodiesel production from sunflower and cooking waste oil in the presence of magnetic perlite as an efficient nanocatalyst: a new platform in chemical engineering.

In the present study, biodiesel was produced from sunflower and cooking waste oil through the transesterification reaction in the presence of magnetic perlite (pir/Fe3O4⋅PAA⋅KOH) as a new engineered nanocatalyst. The catalyst was prepared through the synthesis of Fe3O4 nanoparticles by co-precipitation method, followed by polymerization of acrylamide and finally absorption of KOH on the porous structure of perlite. The incorporation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the perlite structure facilitate easy separation and recycling of the catalyst, and the polymerization of acrylamide create a stable ma

Engineered strains as living factories: efficient biosynthesis and modification of natural products via synthetic biology and one-pot chemical tandem reactions.

Natural products are a crucial source for drug discovery, but their traditional development is limited by resource availability, efficiency, chemical complexity, and the difficulty of rapidly diversifying biologically active scaffolds. This review addresses the central question of how biosynthetic precision and chemical diversification can be coupled when conventional metabolic engineering alone cannot fully overcome low titers, enzyme promiscuity limits, intermediate toxicity, and scale-up heterogeneity. We examine engineered strains as microbial living factories that construct stereochemical

Organic ligand-engineered MOFs-derived spinel CoMn2O4 with tailored nanostructures and chemical properties for synergistic low-temperature removal of NOx and VOCs.

Synchronous abatement of NOx and VOCs is essential for mitigating ozone and PM2.5 pollution, yet balancing NH3-SCR and VOCs oxidation concurrently at low temperature remains challenging. Herein, an organic ligand-oriented strategy was used to modulate nanostructure and chemistry properties of MOFs-derived spinel CoMn2O4 by carboxylate-based MIL-101 and imidazolate-based ZIF as precursors, achieving low-temperature synergistic removal of NO and toluene. CoMn/ZIF shows a porous, sheet-like morphology characterized by stacked nanosheets forming an open, interconnected framework. This structure fa
