The accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine in 1986 led to a substantial increase of thyroid cancer among those exposed as children. The other cancer that is the most sensitive to the effects of ionizing radiation is leukemia, and this paper evaluates the evidence relating exposure to Chernobyl radioactivity and leukemia risk. Two types of objectives are identified, namely, scientific evidence and public health, and two approaches to addressing such objectives are discussed. Thyroid state study was been carried out for Chernobyl NPP accident liquidators living in Ozyorsk, the city, located in the nuclear facility affected zone (Mayak PA). In total 531 individuals were examined. Thyroid assessment was made basing on physical examination, on ultrasound study and on hormones measurement of thyroid stimulating hormone, free thyroxine and thyroid peroxidase antibody. We have examined 15 children (born in 1987-1988), whose fathers liquidated the aftereffects of the accident at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and suffered from acute radiation sickness of the 1st and 2nd stages and 50 children of the control group. The obtained data showed that the number of small developmental abnormalities (stigmas of dysembryogenesis) increased as well as the chromatid aberration frequency as compared with the control group.

Correlation between the level of somatic pathology and cytogenetic characteristics of blood was analyzed in a group of liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP). A statistically significant correlation was found between the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases and the level of chromosome aberrations (total frequency of chromosome aberrations, frequency of dicentrics and centric rings, frequency of chromatid aberrations). The results obtained are of great importance for the substantiated prediction of the development of postradiation pathologies.

After the nuclear accident of Chernobyl, in the population of zones contaminated the malignant renal tumors was increased from 4.7 to 7.5 per 100,000 of total population. Cesium 137 (137Cs) constitutes 80-90% of the internal exposure of these people as well as eliminated through kidneys becomes an important risk factor. Biopsies of stomach and duodenum different regions mucosa obtained from patients with gastroduodenitis (liquidators of consequences of accident in Chernobyl nuclear station--LCA CNS-- and control patients) were studied cultured in vitro. The following are the differences found. Mononuclear cells, differentiating into macrophages were exposed from control biopsies. Mononuclear cells exposed from LCA CNS biopsies formed rosette-like accumulations after mitotic dividing on a distance from the explant. Part of cells within the rosettes acquired processes and formed syncytial structure.
