Chickenpox in Poland in 2020.

INTRODUCTION: Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus. The characteristic feature of this virus is very high visibility of 90-95%. The most common connection is direct contact with the disease or via droplets. The United States was the first country to introduce a universal, population-based childhood varicella vaccination program in 1995. In its 25 years of implementation, this program has significantly reduced the burden of chickenpox. There was a more than 97% reduction in varicella incidence and a 90% reduction in varicella-related hospitalizations and deat

[Epidemiology of varicella in spain pre-and post-vaccination periods].

BACKGROUND: Varicella virus can cause two different diseases: chickenpox and herpes zoster. In 2005 varicella vaccine has been introduced in the Spanish national vaccination schedule for 10-14 years old non-immune people, in order to reduce the severity of the disease. In 2007 a new surveillance protocol with aggregate data for chickenpox and herpes zoster was approved in order to detect any change in age distribution, severity and complications of the chickenpox and herpes zoster cases. The aim of this study is to know the burden of diseases (in the last ten years). METHODS: Number of cases,

Vaccination campaign at a temporary camp for victims of the earthquake in Lorca (Spain).

Outbreaks in temporary camps are an important risk for the health of the displaced population. The town of Lorca (Murcia, Spain) suffered 2 earthquakes on May 2011 that required the re-housing of 1,424 victims in a temporary camp. Following 4 cases of chickenpox control measures were adopted among the displaced population. These measures included vaccination against chickenpox; due to the existence of cases of measles in adjacent regions, it was decided to offer measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination as well. The immunization campaign was performed during 2 d (3 to 4 d after the first ca

Chickenpox in Poland in 2016.

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox is a common disease in Poland. Annually, between 160,000 and 220,000 cases are registered. On average, there is an increase in incidence every 4 years. Therefore, it is justified to use preventive vaccination that effectively protects against infection. In Poland, since 2002, these are recommended vaccinations. AIM: To assess the epidemiological situation of chickenpox in Poland in 2016. and a comparison with the situation in previous years. METHODS: Assessment of the epidemiological situation of chickenpox in Poland in 2016. was based on the results of the analysis of

Susceptibility of cadets and recruits to chickenpox: A seroprevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Regular outbreaks of chickenpox are reported among cadets and recruits in the army undergoing training, resulting in morbidity and loss in terms of training days. Vaccination policy in the army mandates that all cadets and recruits be vaccinated against chickenpox on joining the training centers. However, 100% vaccination of trainees is not achieved. Hence, seroprevalence data among cadets and recruits were collected with the aim to assess the need for vaccination against chickenpox. METHODS: The data were collected from cadets and recruits undergoing training in military training

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics and the approach to infant chickenpox in primary care.

Chickenpox is not common in the first year of life (infant varicella) and there is a lack of data on its presentation, especially in primary care. A year-long observational study (July 2015-2016) carried out by a research network of primary care pediatricians throughout Spain. Two hundred and sixty-four pediatricians gathered data from 358 cases of clinically diagnosed chickenpox in infants. The illness was considered mild in 78% of infants < 7 months compared to 65% in those aged 7 to 12 months (p = 0.0144). Fever (46%) was present in 35% of children ≤ 6 months compared to 55% in older childre

[Measles, Rubella, Mumps and Varicella Seropositivity in Health Technician Students: A Seroprevalence Study].

Measles, rubella, mumps and chickenpox infections are among the childhood diseases that can be prevented by vaccination. Healthcare workers are at greater risk of diseases transmitted through contact with patients' respiratory secretions, infected blood and body fluids. Students studying in the field of health are at the risk of encountering infectious diseases as much as healthcare personnel during their internship and practice experience in healthcare institutions during their education. In addition, due to the risk of these students becoming a source of contamination to the patients they en

UK healthcare professionals' attitudes towards the introduction of varicella vaccine into the routine childhood vaccination schedule and their preferences for administration.

BACKGROUND: Varicella (chickenpox) is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Although typically mild, varicella can cause complications leading to severe illness and even death. Safe and effective varicella vaccines are available. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation has reviewed the evidence and recommended the introduction of varicella vaccine into the UK's routine childhood immunisation schedule. OBJECTIVES: To explore UK healthcare professionals' (HCPs) knowledge and attitudes towards varicella vaccination, its introduction to the UK routine child

Herpes Zoster Risk Reduction through Exposure to Chickenpox Patients: A Systematic Multidisciplinary Review.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox and may subsequently reactivate to cause herpes zoster later in life. The exogenous boosting hypothesis states that re-exposure to circulating VZV can inhibit VZV reactivation and consequently also herpes zoster in VZV-immune individuals. Using this hypothesis, mathematical models predicted widespread chickenpox vaccination to increase herpes zoster incidence over more than 30 years. Some countries have postponed universal chickenpox vaccination, at least partially based on this prediction. After a systematic search and selection procedure, we ana

The Epidemiology of Chickenpox in England, 2016-2022: An Observational Study Using General Practitioner Consultations.

Chickenpox is a common childhood disease caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV). VZV vaccination is not part of the UK childhood immunisation programme, but its potential inclusion is regularly assessed. It is therefore important to understand the ongoing burden of VZV in the community to inform vaccine policy decisions. General practitioner (GP) chickenpox consultations were studied from 1 September 2016 to 9 December 2022. Over the study period, the mean weekly chickenpox consultation rate per 100,000 population in England was 3.4, with a regular peak occurring between weeks 13 and 15. Overa

Management of chickenpox in pregnant women: an Italian perspective.

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by primary infection of varicella zoster virus (VZV). The disease is spread worldwide and is usually benign but, in some groups of population like pregnant women, can have a severe outcome. Due to a not optimal vaccination coverage, a relatively high number of childbearing-aged women in a European country such as Italy tested seronegative for VZV and so are currently at risk of acquiring chickenpox during pregnancy, especially if they live in contact with children for family or work reasons. Only few data are available about the risk of infectio

Chickenpox or smallpox: the use of the febrile prodrome as a distinguishing characteristic.

BACKGROUND: The ability to differentiate chickenpox from smallpox is important for early recognition of bioterrorism events and prevention of false alarms. The febrile prodrome is a clinical feature used to differentiate these conditions. However, the prevalence of prodromal manifestations in chickenpox has not been well established. METHODS: We evaluated prodrome characteristics of all chickenpox cases identified through an active varicella surveillance program over a 21-month period. The frequencies of various prodromal manifestations among vaccinated and unvaccinated case patients were ass

Perspectives on the History and Epidemiology of the Varicella Virus Vaccine and Future Challenges.

The varicella attenuated virus vaccine, developed in Japan in the 1970s, has dramatically reduced the number of pediatric chickenpox cases over the past 30 years due to its widespread use. However, a small number of cases of chickenpox, shingles, aseptic meningitis, and acute retinal necrosis caused by vaccine strains have been reported. There are also issues that need to be addressed, such as breakthrough infections and the persistence of the preventive effect of vaccination. In addition, there is the possibility of the emergence of revertants or mutations in the vaccine strain. In recent yea
