Cortical morphometry in frontoparietal and default mode networks in math-gifted adolescents.

Math-gifted subjects are characterized by above-age performance in intelligence tests, exceptional creativity, and high task commitment. Neuroimaging studies reveal enhanced functional brain organization and white matter microstructure in the frontoparietal executive network of math-gifted individuals. However, the cortical morphometry of these subjects remains largely unknown. The main goal of this study was to compare the cortical morphometry of math-gifted adolescents with that of an age- and IQ-matched control group. We used surface-based methods to perform a vertex-wise analysis of cortic

Perceptions about mindfulness-based interventions among individuals recovering from opioid and alcohol use disorders: Findings from focus groups.

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been used as an intervention to support recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD). We sought to identify attitudes and experiences toward standardized MBIs among individuals recovering from these substance abuse disorders (SUD) through a qualitative approach. DESIGN: We conducted three 60-minute focus groups among people with history of SUD (6-months to 3 years in recovery): two groups with those with alcohol use disorder (AUD) history and one with individuals with history of opioid use disorder (OUD). Each g

Medicaid Enrollment and Intergenerational Transfers of Wealth Among Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Medicaid look-back periods are meant to prevent Medicaid applicants from gifting assets to meet eligibility requirements. These policies have the potential to affect families across generations given their ability to restrict the transfer of assets between parent and child. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using 2008-2018 data from the Health and Retirement Study, this study analyzed the estate planning and familial wealth transfer behaviors of a cohort of older adults aged 65 and older who became Medicaid recipients during a 10-year period. RESULTS: There were 8,347 r

Sexually transmitted infection among adolescents receiving special education services.

BACKGROUND: To estimate the relative risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among children identified as having learning disabilities through the special education system. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used special education data and Medicaid data from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for calendar year 2002. The sample comprised 51,234 Medicaid-eligible children, aged 12-17 years, 8015 of whom were receiving special education services. Claims associated with diagnoses of STIs were abstracted, and logistic regression was used to estimate the odds of STI among children in different spe

Mathematically gifted adolescents use more extensive and more bilateral areas of the fronto-parietal network than controls during executive functioning and fluid reasoning tasks.

The main goal of this study was to investigate the neural substrates of fluid reasoning and visuospatial working memory in adolescents with precocious mathematical ability. The study population comprised two groups of adolescents: 13 math-gifted adolescents and 14 controls with average mathematical skills. Patterns of activation specific to reasoning tasks in math-gifted subjects were examined using functional magnetic resonance images acquired while the subjects were performing Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (RAPM) and the Tower of London (TOL) tasks. During the tasks, both groups show

Couples problem-solving therapy for perinatal women living with HIV and male partners in Malawi: a study protocol for a pilot trial of Mphatso.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal depression is a common, yet understudied, mental health disorder among women and contributes to poor engagement in prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. Male partners are positioned to provide critical forms of social and economic support during pregnancy and postpartum, and also may contribute to women's stress, depression and anxiety through intimate partner violence and withholding of social support. Despite the critical role of men in pregnancy outcomes and HIV prevention, few interventions have engaged men around women's d

Aggression and sexual offense in Asperger's syndrome.

Asperger's Syndrome is one of the diagnostic subcategories of pervasive developmental disorders. It is characterized by a defect in reciprocal social interaction, lack of empathy for others and poor non-verbal communication. Antisocial acts, including aggression and sexual offense, are not considered to be common in this disorder. We describe an adolescent with Asperger's Syndrome whose main problems are his violence and sexual offenses. We assume that these symptoms are secondary to his diagnosis of Asperger's as a manifestation of his difficulties with the "theory of mind" of others. This at

Two-phase survey of eating disorders in gifted dance and non-dance high-school students in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Despite a growing body of literature reporting eating disorders (EDs) in non-Western countries in recent years, most of these studies are limited to questionnaire-based surveys or case-series studies. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and correlates of EDs in Taiwanese high-school students. METHODS: The study subjects consisted of all the female high-school students enrolled in the gifted dance class in 2003 in Taiwan (n=655) and non-dance female students randomly chosen from the same school (n=1251). All the participants were asked to complete self-report questionnai

Parental marital disruption, family type, and transfers to disabled elderly parents.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of parental marital status, marital history, and family type on intergenerational living arrangements and adult children's time and cash transfers to their unpartnered disabled elderly parents. METHODS: We used data from the Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old survey to estimate the joint probabilities that an adult child provides time and/or cash transfers to a parent and to analyze a five-level categorical variable capturing parent-child living arrangements. RESULT: The estimates suggest significant detrimental

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and intellectual giftedness: a study of symptom frequency and minor physical anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of symptoms of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in intellectually gifted adults and children. METHODS: Two cross-sectional studies were performed in children and adults whose intelligence quotient (IQ) had been previously evaluated using Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM) test. Seventy-seven adults displaying IQ scores above the 98th percentile were assessed using the Adult Self-Report Scale (ASRS-18) for signs of ADHD and a modified Waldrop scale for minor physical anomalies (MPAs). Thirty-nine children (grades 1-5) exhibiting IQ scores

Developmental Trajectory of Depressive Symptoms from Early Childhood through High School in Children and Adolescents with a High Intellectual Potential.

We aimed to explore the developmental trajectory of depressive symptoms in a national sample of French children with a high intellectual potential (HIP) seeking help from gifted organizations. Participants were drawn from a national retrospective survey sent to 1200 families with HIP children (IQ ≥ 130) from primary to high school and they answered a self-report questionnaire of a depression scale (MDI-C). The children's parents completed a self-report questionnaire collected on different stages of the child's school level, perinatality, psychomotor development, health, family's history, behav

Racial/ethnic disparities in infertility treatment utilization in the US, 2011-2019.

With delayed child-bearing age, there has been an increase in infertility rates globally and in the United States (US). Unsurprisingly, there has been a concomitant substantial increase in the number of individuals seeking infertility treatments over the last decade. This study aimed to examine the relationship between race/ethnicity and the utilization of different infertility treatments over the previous decade. We conducted this retrospective cohort study using the United States (US) Birth data files 2011-2019. We calculated the rates of infertility treatment and its subtypes over the study

Psychosocial aspects of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Increased numbers of psychiatric diagnoses and increased levels of psychological distress are seen in the majority of medical clinic patients with gastrointestinal motility disorders. In IBS, psychological symptoms are believed to be comorbid conditions, which do not cause the motility disorder but which do influence the patient's decision to consult a physician. In functional dyspepsia, psychological symptoms are present in many patients, but their role is not known; the available data suggest that psychological symptoms do not predict which patients will consult a physician. Among constipate

'At Least I Get to Visit Him, That's All That Matters': Maintaining Contact With a Family Member in Prison, Developing a Child-Centred Framework for Change.

INTRODUCTION: Familial imprisonment is one of ten recognised adverse childhood experiences (ACE), with established long-term impacts on health, care and wellbeing. Where safe and appropriate, the right of a child to protect and maintain family life (and therefore visit and/or remain in contact with a family member in prison) is protected in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Despite this, families face many barriers when visiting prison, and children and young people's experiences of doing so, in their own words, are less widely reported. METHODS: Drawing on ser

Absence or presence? Complexities in the donor narratives of single mothers using sperm donation.

STUDY QUESTION: How do single mothers who have conceived a child via anonymous or identity-release sperm donation represent the donor? SUMMARY ANSWER: While the majority of mothers described their anonymous and identity-release donors as symbolically significant to their families, others were more likely to emphasize that their lack of information limited their thoughts about him. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There is limited understanding of the factors that impact upon how single mothers represent the donor, and whether or not they are determined by specific donor programmes (anonymous or identi

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Using a Progressive Muscle Relaxation Technique on the Self-Efficacy of Breastfeeding in Mothers With Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: Breast milk is a God-given gift that conveys a mother's love and compassion and that is made according to the needs and age of the child. Mothers who are interested in the welfare of their newborns tend to breastfeed their children. Training programs have been shown to improve breastfeeding self-efficacy in terms of both duration and amount. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of using the progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) technique on the self-efficacy of breastfeeding in mothers with preterm infants. METHODS: A clinical trial approach was used. Sixty mot

Precursors to masochistic and dependent character development.

Due to the extreme states of masochism, dependency, and narcissistic rage that these patients experience, the treatment must be attuned to the inevitable periods of regression and primitive defense. The patient feels compelled to be a servant to the object, yet is furious at this less than equal status. The alternating states of idealizing the object in a masochistic fashion, the anger at the lack of self importance, and the desperate hope for soothing from that object create an externally focused character structure, which generally leads to a pattern of acting out, the lack of internal linki

Adolescent girls' perceptions of goodness and badness and the role of will in their behavioral decisions.

The present study explored adolescents' ethical self-images and related behavioral decisions. Data were collected from two groups of adolescent girls (N = 49) using an open-ended survey. One group attended a public high school for gifted students and the other group attended an alternative public high school. The results indicate that goodness is connected with altruism, adherence to external standards, or self-beneficial actions. Alternatively, badness is associated with going against social norms, harming others, or violating inner values. In these two groups overall, decisions about how to
