FATHERHOOD, FAMILY LAW, AND THE CRISIS OF BOYS AND MEN.

Boys and men in all racial and ethnic groups and across most socioeconomic groups are struggling on many fronts, including education, employment, physical and mental health, and social integration. In these areas and more, boys and men are much worse off than they were only a few decades ago. The crisis-which is concentrated among men without college degrees-is rooted in large-scale structural changes to the economy that have decimated jobs for this group and policy choices that emphasize incarceration while doing little to address economic inequality. The decline in male well-being is not jus

Teacher-assessed behavior of children prenatally exposed to cocaine.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal cocaine exposure has been associated with alterations in neonatal behavior and more recently a dose-response relationship has been identified. However, few data are available to address the long-term behavioral effects of prenatal exposures in humans. The specific aim of this report is to evaluate the school-age behavior of children prenatally exposed to cocaine. METHODS: All black non-human immunodeficiency virus-positive participants in a larger pregnancy outcomes study who delivered singleton live born infants between September 1, 1989 and August 31, 1991 were eligible

'I took care of my kids': mothering while incarcerated.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how incarcerated mothers make meaning of their parenting role and relationship with their children prior to incarceration and during custody. The aims of this project were to explore the experiences of mothering prior to incarceration and during custody using the Gendered Pathways Perspective and to examine how mothering intersects with incarcerated women's health and health outcomes to facilitate prevention and intervention strategies. This secondary data analysis used qualitative methods and grounded theory to identify themes related to mothering from 41 inc

Neglect of chronically ill children.

Child neglect is the most prevalent form of maltreatment; more children die of neglect than of abuse. Neglect has been found to be more prevalent than physical abuse among the population of children with chronic illnesses. Data from a retrospective chart review illustrate the ways in which neglect affected 61 children with chronic illnesses. Types of neglect include medical care neglect, educational neglect, abandonment, emotional neglect, and physical neglect. The state Child Protection Agency was notified of neglect in 67 instances. Two children died subsequent to neglect. Sixteen children w

Childhood Adversity and Associated Psychosocial Function in Adolescents with Complex Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is linked to a number of adult health and psychosocial outcomes; however, it is not clear how to best assess and model childhood adversity reported by adolescents with known maltreatment exposure. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to identify an empirically-supported measurement model of childhood adversity for adolescents in child protective custody and associations among childhood adversity and adolescent outcomes. METHODS: Self-report survey data assessed childhood adversity and adolescent outcomes, including psychological wellbeing, quality of life, and substan

Hoarding, hermitage, and the law: why we love the collyer brothers.

Interest in hoarding behavior has intensified, as it works its way through DSM-V deliberations and treatment models. Meanwhile, both documentarians and fiction writers have embraced accounts of individuals with disposophobia and romanticized versions of the Collyer brothers, the Hermits of Harlem. In this article, I examine the range of media and professional attention given to hoarders and their problems and then focus on a potential role for forensic mental health professionals. The psycholegal problems of hoarders include health and zoning code violations that evolve into criminal charges,

Forensic psychology in Iceland: a survey of members of the Icelandic Psychological Society.

Forensic psychology is a rapidly growing specialism within psychology. A survey was carried out among the 152 members of the Icelandic Psychological Society (Sálfradingafélagi Islands) about their involvement and role in court work. Out of 101 psychologists who responded to the survey, 39 reported having been involved in court work, of whom 34 had testified in court. The great majority of court work of the psychologists involved assessments relating to child-care and custody proceedings, but there was evidence that Icelandic psychologists are increasingly becoming involved in criminal cases co

What Deters Child Sex Offenders? A Comparison Between Completed and Noncompleted Offenses.

This study examined the role of the reaction of the victim, the nature of the physical setting, and the proximity of third parties in deterring offenders from completing an act of child sexual abuse (CSA). A self-report study was conducted with 238 adult males serving a custodial sentence for CSA, of whom 82 identified an occasion in which they had tried to have sexual contact with a child but did not because they were stopped or discouraged. We examined the situational characteristics of the noncompleted offense and compared these with the most recent completed offense by the same offenders.

Early parent-child interaction and home environments of children exposed prenatally to opioids: A comparison of biological mothers and out-of-home caregivers.

Children born to mothers with opioid use disorder (OUD) are at increased risk of maltreatment and out-of-home care (OOHC) placement. This study examines the parent-child interaction quality and home environments of 92 New Zealand children with prenatal opioid exposure (OE) and 106 non-opioid-exposed (NE) children. Experiences for those in maternal care versus OOHC were of particular interest. Biological mothers completed a lifestyle interview during late pregnancy/at birth. At 18 months, parent-child interaction observations, maternal/primary caregiver interviews, and the Home Observation for

Parental substance abuse and the nature of child maltreatment.

The authors reviewed 190 randomly selected records from the case load of a large juvenile court. These records involved cases in which the state took legal custody of the children following a finding of significant child maltreatment, based on a "clear and convincing" standard of evidence. Sixty-seven percent (127/190) of these cases involved parents who were classified as substance abusers. The results of this study revealed specific associations between (a) alcohol abuse and physical maltreatment and (b) cocaine abuse and sexual maltreatment. Logistic analyses, testing for the effects of pol

[Involuntary admission of addict during early pregnancy].

A 30-year-old cocaine-dependent woman was 16 weeks pregnant. Because of possible endangerment of the fetus, an involuntary provisional admission was authorized. Of particular interest is the application of the Dutch Act on Formal Admissions to Psychiatric Hospitals for the primary diagnosis 'addiction' and the fact that the fetus was regarded as a legal 'other'. In severe cases of addiction combined with pregnancy an earlier intervention is needed and arrangement of accelerated legal custody of the newborn before birth should be considered. For the protection of the unborn, we advocate a stric

Essential standards for perinatal care of women and children living in prison.

The female prison population continues to rise, with prisons worldwide failing to meet international human rights standards. Many are overcrowded, poorly resourced, and unsafe, especially for women. Women in prison are an obstetric group at high risk, with deficits in perinatal care leading to preventable maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Mother-child imprisonment and mother-child separation can have substantial intergenerational health and social consequences. In this Viewpoint, we present essential standards for perinatal care of women and children who are incarcerated, aligned to

"What's the point of telling them?": Unspoken struggles of pregnant women with substance use history in Australian prisons.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant women with substance use histories face many challenges during incarceration, leading to potentially harmful outcomes for both maternal and infant health. However, research on how to address these challenges is limited. Early disclosure of substance use is crucial for engaging in and receiving timely, appropriate intervention and follow-up care post-release. Current evidence suggests women under-report their substance use when pregnant due to stigma and fear of losing child custody. Whilst these factors are likely exacerbated in the prison environment, specific underlyin

[Gender-specific Differences in the Degree of Burden on Children and Adolescents Taken into Custody].

Gender-specific Differences in the Degree of Burden on Children and Adolescents Taken into Custody Children and adolescents who were taken into care are a high-risk group for mental disorders such as externalizing problems or conduct disorders. 95 children and adolescents who were taken into care were tested with the Screening Child Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument 2 (MAYSI-2). In a large proportion of those children and adolescents emotional and physical neglect and abuse was identified. There were sex differences in suicidal thoughts, somatoform dis

Motherhood and imprisonment: a typology of mothers' identity after release.

PURPOSE: Imprisonment is a bitter and painful experience for women, often exacerbating the difficulties and challenges of motherhood and their relationship with their children. This study aims to explore the narratives of mothers regarding their maternal identity and present a typology of mothers with prison records as they resume contact with their children after release. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to collect data. It is based on the experiences and narratives of 18 Iranian women, all of whom had at least one child, who were either imp

Social justice with harm reduction approaches for mothers who use opioids: an international comparative ethnographic study with community engaged methods.

BACKGROUND: Mothers and pregnant women who use opioids are particularly vulnerable. Mothers often fear surveillance, stigma, and loss of custody of their children when seeking treatment. Although opioid agonist therapy (OAT) has been shown to be effective, access varies regionally, and not all mothers can cease using opioids. This study compares outcomes of mothers who use opioids in the UK with universal healthcare and OAT access, and mothers in the U.S. with restricted healthcare and OAT access, focusing on their interactions with services. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of two

Pediatric response to a large-scale child protection intervention.

OBJECTIVE: In a rural area of the US state of Texas, in April 2008, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) responded to evidence of widespread child abuse in an isolated religious compound by removing 463 individuals into state custody. This mass child protection intervention is the largest such action that has ever occurred in the United States. The objective of this paper is to characterize the burdens placed on the area's community resources, healthcare providers, and legal system, the limitations encountered by the forensic and public health professionals, and how th

Knowledge, Awareness, and Attitude of Physicians Toward Child Abuse: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Child abuse refers to any type of mistreatment of a child, perpetrated by a parent, caregiver, or another individual in a custodial capacity, which may lead to instances of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Physicians play a crucial role in identifying and managing this phenomenon in the healthcare setting, as the number of unreported cases increases globally. METHODS: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted between 2022 and 2023 among physicians practicing in Saudi Arabia to assess their knowledge, awareness, and attitude toward child abuse. The data were

The Psychosocial and Developmental Impact of Maternal Incarceration on Children: Legal and Ethical Implications.

The psychosocial and developmental impact of maternal incarceration on children presents profound challenges that intersect legal, ethical, medical, and social dimensions. Children of incarcerated mothers face severe psychological stress, emotional trauma, and developmental setbacks, with documented effects including cognitive deficits, emotional instability, and increased health risks. This paper explores the scope and prevalence of maternal incarceration, highlighting its significant rise globally and its disproportionate effect on women in socio-economically vulnerable positions. Adolescents at risk for mistreating their children. Part II: A home- and clinic-based prevention program.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if adding an intensive home visitation component to a comprehensive adolescent-oriented maternity program prevents child abuse and neglect. METHODS: We studied 171 participants in a comprehensive, adolescent-oriented maternity program who were deemed to be at high risk for child abuse and neglect. Half were randomly assigned to receive in-home parenting instruction. Major disruptions of primary care-giving by the adolescent mother were classified hierarchically as abuse, neglect, and abandonment. RESULTS: Compliance with home visits varied in relation to the support t
