Follow-up study of a right- and a left-hemispherectomized child: implications for localization and impairment of language in children.

Two hemispherectomized girls, one operated on the right, the other on the left, were followed from time of surgery until 9 and 10 years of age and compared with respect to course of language acquisition following surgery. At conclusion of follow-up, receptive and expressive language, phoneme perception and production, and sentence processing of the two hemispherectomized children were compared with those of two control groups of similar age, one developing language normally, the other language-impaired. The left-hemispherectomized child's abilities were similar to those of the language-impaire

Clinical characteristics of children referred to a child development center for evaluation of speech, language, and communication disorders.

Speech, language, and communication disorders are prominent reasons for referrals to a child development center. From 1984 to 1988, 1,090 preschool children were referred to our child development center, which serves the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Of all referrals, 432 (41%) were primarily due to speech, language, and communication problems. After exclusion of those with IQ < 50 and those with non-language-related disabilities, 323 children remained. The children were classified into different subtypes of developmental language disorders and autistic spectrum disorders. The main developmental

Shared book reading in Down syndrome: parent-child interaction, language, and communication compared with typically developing peers.

PURPOSE: Shared book reading (SBR) is well-suited to children with Down syndrome (DS), yet evidence on parent-child communication during SBR remains limited. This exploratory observational study examined parental behaviours, interaction and communication, and child engagement and multimodal communication during SBR with children with DS (n = 12; 24-45 months), a typically developing (TD) group similar on chronological age (AM; n = 10; 25-47 months) and a TD group similar on receptive vocabulary (LM; n = 10; 12-29 months). METHOD: Parent-child dyads were video-recorded sharing an unfamiliar pi

Large language models and child mortality: opportunities and challenges in answering public queries on under-5 causes.

BACKGROUND: Reducing under-5 mortality remains a global health priority. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used by the public to access medical information. However, current evidence evaluating LLMs' performance in public-facing child health communication is scarce. METHODS: We selected the top five search terms related to each of the five leading causes of under-5 mortality (prematurity, pneumonia, birth asphyxia, malaria, and diarrhoea) using Google Trends, generating 25 representative public queries. Responses were collected from four LLMs (ChatGPT-4.0, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Bing

Language skills in a child with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy following intrathecal chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The language skills of a male child with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and coincidentally treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with intrathecal chemotherapy at the age of 3 years 8 months were comprehensively evaluated twice over a 6-month period approximately 5½ years after diagnosis of ALL. Despite marked chemotherapy-related leukoencephalopathic changes documented on magnetic resonance imaging, the child presented with stable language skills, which were generally average to above-average based on the normative data from a comprehensive language test battery. A natural language processing and deep learning approach to identify child abuse from pediatric electronic medical records.

Child physical abuse is a leading cause of traumatic injury and death in children. In 2017, child abuse was responsible for 1688 fatalities in the United States, of 3.5 million children referred to Child Protection Services and 674,000 substantiated victims. While large referral hospitals maintain teams trained in Child Abuse Pediatrics, smaller community hospitals often do not have such dedicated resources to evaluate patients for potential abuse. Moreover, identification of abuse has a low margin of error, as false positive identifications lead to unwarranted separations, while false negativ

Maternal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and child's cognitive, language, and motor function: ECLIPSES study.

Prenatal exposure to air pollution, even at low levels, has been associated with negative effects on a child's neuropsychological functioning. The present work aimed to investigate the associations between prenatal exposure to air pollution on a child's cognitive, language, and motor function at 40 days of age in a highly exposed area of Spain. From the ECLIPSES study population, the present work counted 473 mother-child pairs. Traffic-related air pollution levels at home addresses during the whole pregnancy were estimated including particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm

A Longitudinal Study of Parent-Child Interactions and Language Outcomes in Fragile X Syndrome and Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Difficulties with pragmatic language (i.e., language in social contexts, such as conversational ability) are a noted characteristic of the language profiles of both fragile X syndrome (FXS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), conditions which show significant phenotypic overlap. Understanding the origins and developmental course of pragmatic language problems in FXS and other developmental conditions associated with language impairment is a critical step for the development of targeted interventions to promote communicative competence across the lifespan. This study examined pragmatic language

Challenges in translating interview protocols for alleged child victims of sexual abuse to different languages: A case study.

Adequate interviewing of alleged victims of child sexual abuse is critical for the investigation and for preserving the welfare of the child. Investigative interview protocols for children (IIPCs) have been developed to meet this twofold purpose. This article focuses on one previously unexplored issue related to applicability of IIPCs: how well they translate into other languages. This case study provides an in-depth analysis of an example of the translation of an IIPC to a new language and its adaptation to a particular cultural setting. Using an interpretive description approach and a mixed-

Mother-Child Interaction and Early Language Skills in Children Born to Mothers with Substance Abuse and Psychiatric Problems.

This prospective, longitudinal study with data collected at four time points investigated how maternal psychiatric symptoms, substance abuse and maternal intrusiveness in interaction were related to early child language skills. Three groups of mothers were recruited during pregnancy: One from residential treatment institutions for substance abuse (n = 18), one from psychiatric outpatient treatment (n = 22) and one from well-baby clinics (n = 30). Maternal substance abuse and anti-social and borderline personality traits were assessed during pregnancy, postpartum depression at 3 months, materna

Abdominal aortic aneurysm in a 3-year-old child: a case report and review of the Japanese-language literature.

A case of abdominal aortic aneurysm associated with renovascular hypertension in a 3-year-old boy is reported. The child was treated by resection of the aneurysm and replacement with a 12 mm polyester (Dacron) bifurcated graft. The cause of the aneurysm was not revealed by clinical and pathologic examination. In addition to the case report, the Japanese-language literature is reviewed. The most frequently reported etiologic factor was Kawasaki disease; we could not find any evidence of connective-tissue disorder as a cause for abdominal aortic aneurysms occurring in children.

Examining the Language and Communication Factors of a Deaf Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder from an Immigrant Korean Family.

Extant research on learners who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing with disabilities who come from Asian immigrant families is extremely sparse. The authors conducted an intrinsic case study of a deaf student with autism who comes from a Korean immigrant family. To acquire a comprehensive understanding of language and communication characteristics, they analyzed (a) interview data of three administrators who worked with the student and family and (b) school documents/reports issued to the parents. Themes are reported across the three components of the tri-focus framework (Siegel-Causey & Bashin

Development and validation of a shortened version of the Child Abuse Self Report Scale (CASRS-12) in the Arabic language.

BACKGROUND: All available scales to screen for child abuse may be challenging to administer due to their length. Indeed, a higher number of items is associated with more administration time and less motivation to engage in responding. We aimed through this study to examine the psychometric properties of a brief Arabic version of the Child Abuse Self Report Scale (CASRS-12) in terms of factorial structure, internal consistency, divergent validity, and correlations with measures of bullying victimization, eating attitudes and perceived social support. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional, we

Noninvasive Localization of Language Cortex in an Awake 4-Year-Old Child with Rasmussen Encephalitis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Presurgical mapping of eloquent cortex in young patients undergoing neurosurgery is critical for timely intervention, surgical planning, and minimizing postoperative deficits. However, invasive direct cortical stimulation has limited success in young children and noninvasive modalities, such as magnetoencephalography and functional MRI, require sedation, often precluding localization of critical language cortices. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a noninvasive brain stimulation technique, is well suited to evaluate language areas in young children because it

Input and uptake for complex syntactic structures in child language development: Implementing structural priming with diverse learner populations.

Language development depends on both the quantity of linguistic input children receive and their ability to uptake input, yet the relationship between these two factors remains unclear. This study adopted the structural priming paradigm to examine how input and uptake shape syntactic development in three groups of Mandarin-speaking children aged 5-9 years (N = 75, Nfemale = 39): neurotypical monolinguals (optimal input and uptake), monolinguals with Developmental Language Disorder (optimal input, reduced uptake), and Mandarin-English heritage bilinguals (reduced input, optimal uptake). All gro

Thyroid autoimmunity in euthyroid pregnant women is associated with slower productive language acquisition: the Odense child cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal thyroid autoimmunity and thyroid function in early pregnancy may impact fetal neurodevelopment. We aimed to investigate how thyroid autoimmunity and thyroid function in early pregnancy were associated with language acquisition in offspring at 12-36 months of age. METHODS: This study was embedded in the prospective Odense child cohort. Mother-child dyads were excluded in case of maternal intake of thyroid medication during pregnancy. The parents completed MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (MB-CDI) every third month to assess their offspring's productive
