The children of related parents show increased risk of early mortality. The Native American genome typically exhibits long stretches of homozygosity, and Latin Americans are highly heterogeneous regarding the individual burden of homozygosity, the proportion and the type of Native American ancestry. We analysed nationwide mortality and genome-wide genotype data from admixed Chileans to investigate the relationship between common causes of child mortality, homozygosity and Native American ancestry. Results from two-stage linear-Poisson regression revealed a strong association between the sum le

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to examine the impact of child HIV infection on mortality and to identify nutritional and sociodemographic factors that increase the risk of child mortality independent of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, among 687 children 6-60 months of age who were admitted to hospital with pneumonia. After discharge, children were followed up every 2 weeks during the first year and every 4 months thereafter. Sociodemographic characteristics were determined at baseline, and HIV status,

This study investigated the relationship between child maltreatment and premature mortality in early to mid-adulthood. Potential heterogeneities by gender and maltreatment subtypes were also examined. This study utilized data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), including 20,654 participants, of whom 678 died during follow-up. Child maltreatment was assessed using a combination of self-reports from Wave I (grades 7-12) and retrospective reports of pre-sixth grade experiences from Wave III (ages 18-26). Vital status was ascertained using the Mortality

BACKGROUND: Aid sanctions are a type of financial punishment imposed on a country by other countries or international organisations in response to a political coup, armed conflict, or human rights abuses. Humanitarian catastrophes in Burkina Faso, Sudan, and Myanmar have brought aid sanctions to the centre of the foreign affairs strategy debate because of their inadvertent negative effects on human health. Our analysis investigates the effects of aid sanctions from 1990 to 2019 on maternal and child mortality. These questions are particularly relevant in the context of the abrupt shift in US f

The child mortality rate is a leading factor in the well-being and development of a nation. It measures the quality of life for a given population. This study aimed to determine the effects of under-five child mortality in Ethiopia. The authors used a cross-sectional study design via the 2019 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. For our study, we used 3837 births recorded by mothers in seven regions of Ethiopia. In this study, the author employed the Bayesian and classical logistic regression models. The study found that the household size, number of under-five children, Sex of child, twin

Floods, storms, and temperature extremes are examples of extreme weather events that have a substantial influence on a country's demographic dynamics, including migration, fertility, and mortality. Changes in population size, composition, and distribution may result from these occurrences. This study, which spans the years 1966-2018, looks at how Bangladesh's total fertility rate (TFR) is affected by extreme weather events and child mortality, including neonatal, infant, male infant, and under-five mortality. We use data from secondary publicly accessible sources, such as the World Bank and Th

Rotavirus remains a leading cause of diarrhoeal morbidity and mortality in young children and rotavirus vaccines are critical for reducing global disease burden. This report addresses the performance of rotavirus vaccines in countries with high child mortality. We performed a sensitivity analysis as part of a systematic review on rotavirus vaccines to inform development of World Health Organization vaccine recommendations. The efficacy of four prequalified vaccines against severe rotavirus gastroenteritis was similar across high mortality settings in Asia and Africa. Within the first year foll

The 20th and 21st century witnessed the development of many sophisticated vaccinations and other key preventive health interventions, and yet child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa remains unacceptably high. One of the barriers identified to reducing child mortality in rural regions of Africa is distance and lack of transportation. In order to address this, a growing charitable organisation, Riders for Health (http://www.riders.org) has developed a reliable and cost-effective system for managing vehicles used in all types of healthcare delivery. The system intends to ensure that the delivery of

How do patterns of socioeconomic inequality shape the risk of child fatality in urban areas? Research has shown that both intentional and unintentional child deaths are concentrated in areas of social disadvantage. Yet in densely populated cities, child fatality risk may not follow smooth spatial patterns and instead exhibit abrupt shifts across neighborhood boundaries. This study applies a dissimilarity-based Bayesian spatial conditional autoregressive (CAR) model to detect localized discontinuities in child mortality risk associated with structural inequality. Using a continuous dissimilarit

OBJECTIVE: To calculate the impact of birth defects (BDs) diagnosed during the perinatal period on the mortality of children under 5 years of age.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort analysis. From the monitoring system, we collected all hospital delivery, BD monitoring, and death information for children under 5 years in Hunan Province from 2017-2022. These data were linked by ID number. Mortality rates and Cox proportional hazards models were used to compute hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the impact of BDs on mortality in children under 5 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Child mortality has declined rapidly over the last century in many high-income countries. However, little is known about the socio-economic differences in this decline and whether these vary across causes of death.
METHODS: We used register data that included all Norwegian births between 1968 and 2010 (2.1 million), and we analysed how all-cause and cause-specific child (0-4 years) and adolescent (5-20 years) mortality rates vary with relative parental income the year before the birth.
RESULTS: Child and adolescent all-cause mortality decreased with increasing parental relative i

BACKGROUND: Updated information on the cause of childhood mortality is essential for developing policies and designing programmes targeting the major burden of disease. There is a paucity of evidence regarding the current estimates of the cause of death in Bangladesh, which is essential for reinvigorating the current policies and reshaping existing strategies to avert preventable deaths. This paper aims to address this critical evidence gap and report the cause, timing and place of death among children under-five years of age using a nationally representative sample.
METHODS: The present stud

INTRODUCTION: Child mortality remains highest in regions of the world most affected by HIV/AIDS. The aim of this study was to assess child mortality rates in relation to maternal HIV status from 2005 to 2015, the period of rapid HIV treatment scale-up in Rwanda.
METHODS: We used data from the 2005, 2010 and 2015 Rwanda Demographic Health Surveys to derive under-2 mortality rates by survey year and mother's HIV status and to build a multivariable logistic regression model to establish the association of independent predictors of under-2 mortality stratified by mother's HIV status.
RESULTS: In

OBJECTIVE: Using estimates from the 2013 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, we update evidence on disparities in under-five child injury mortality between developing and developed countries from 1990 to 2013.
METHODS: Mortality rates were accessed through the online visualization tool by the GBD study 2013 group. We calculated percent change in child injury mortality rates between 1990 and 2013. Data analysis was conducted separately for <1 year and 1-4 years to specify age differences in rate changes.
RESULTS: Between 1990 and 2013, over 3-fold mortality gaps were observed between develo

OBJECTIVE: To collect accurate data on disease- and microbial-specific causes and avoidable factors in child deaths in a developing country.
METHODS: A systematic prospective audit of deaths of children seen at Goroka Hospital in the highlands of Papua New Guinea was carried out. Over a 24-month period, we studied 353 consecutive deaths of children: 126 neonates, 186 children aged 1-59 months, and 41 children aged 5-12 years.
FINDINGS: The most frequent age-specific clinical diagnoses were as follows: for neonates--very low birth weight, septicaemia, birth asphyxia and congenital syphilis; f

PURPOSE: Under-five mortality is a key indicator of child health, and a measure of the quality of healthcare in a country. Seasonality affecting under-five deaths is not well understood. We reviewed seasonal variations of mortality among infants under one year, children under five years, and stillbirths in Sierra Leone using data collected continuously during the 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone.
METHODS: We used Ebola and non-Ebola death data from the 117 Call Centers, laboratory testing records, burial team records, and the Viral Hemorrhagic Fever module divided into dry and rainy s

IMPORTANCE: A prompt malaria diagnosis is crucial for the management of children with febrile illness in sub-Saharan African countries, where malaria remains a leading cause of mortality among children younger than 5 years of age. The development and distribution of point-of-care rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria has transformed practice, but limited systematic evidence exists on how malaria RDTs have affected the management of febrile illness and mortality for children younger than 5 years of age across sub-Saharan Africa countries.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the

OBJECTIVES: The Ebola virus disease outbreak in 2014-2016 had a substantial impact on population health in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. This study aimed to assess whether the impact continued after the outbreak ended regarding child mortality.
METHODS: Cross-sectional logistic regressions were run using data from the Demographic and Health Surveys in the three countries.
RESULTS: The average child mortality rate was significantly lower for children born after the outbreak than for those born before. However, the association of the child mortality rate with an increase in the number of

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia contributed 81% of 5·9 million under-5 deaths and 77% of 2·6 million stillbirths worldwide in 2015. Vital registration and verbal autopsy data are mainstays for the estimation of leading causes of death, but both are non-specific and focus on a single underlying cause. We aimed to provide granular data on the contributory causes of death in stillborn fetuses and in deceased neonates and children younger than 5 years, to inform child mortality prevention efforts.
METHODS: The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Network was e
