Wildfires generate large amounts of ash that can contaminate watercourses, with potentially harmful effects on aquatic biodiversity that are not fully understood. This study experimentally evaluated the influence of environmentally relevant concentrations of grassland ash on aquatic biota, using the freshwater non-biting midge Chironomus xanthus as a model organism. Specifically, we assessed the toxicity of ash on oviposition and emergence patterns, changes in body and head capsule sizes, and deformities in the mentum and mandible of 4th-instar larvae and the wings of adult C. xanthus. The tes

Biodegradable plastic, a widely used ecofriendly alternative to conventional plastic, easily form nanoplastics (NPs) upon environmental weathering. However, the effects and underlying mechanisms governing the toxicity of photoaged biodegradable NPs to aquatic insects are not understood. In this study, we investigated the photoaging of polylactic acid nanoplastics (PLA-NPs, a typical biodegradable plastic) that were placed under xenon arc lamp for 50 days and 100 days and compared the toxicity of virgin and photoaged PLA-NPs to Chironomus kiinensis (a dominant aquatic insect). The results showe

The ecotoxicological effect expressed as mortality of four metal ions (Cd, Cu, Zn, Al) and their associations on winter third- to fourth-instar larvae of Chironomus plumosus was determined. The effect of individual metals was introduced as acute toxicological effect and expressed as LC(50) and LC95 values with 95% intervals of confidence. On the basis of the LC50 values the toxicity of metals after 96 h treatment was ranked Cu>>Cd>Zn>Al. Copper was at least 100 times more toxic than other metals tested. When the acute toxic effect of metal pairs was observed, in general, deleterious effects we

Between 1978 and 2008, 13 avian botulism outbreaks were recorded in the wetlands of Mancha Húmeda (central Spain). These outbreaks caused the deaths of around 20,000 birds from over 50 species, including globally endangered white-headed ducks (Oxyura leucoceophala). Here, a significant association was found between the number of dead birds recorded in each botulism outbreak and the mean temperature in July (always >26°C). The presence of Clostridium botulinum type C/D in wetland sediments was detected by real-time PCR (quantitative PCR [qPCR]) in 5.8% of 207 samples collected between 2005 and

Malaria remains a serious public health problem in the Amazon. The main vector, Anopheles darlingi, uses natural and artificial water bodies as breeding grounds, places that harbor various aquatic insects, which should be considered in control programs. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine the composition of the aquatic entomofauna associated with Anopheles spp. breeding sites and to evaluate the efficacy of a new Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis biolarvicide against An. darlingi, as well as its impact on non-target insects under simulated field conditions. To asse

Ecological control of blackflies (Simulium damnosum) can be an alternative or additional tool to enhance onchocerciasis elimination efforts. However, limited research is conducted on the ecology of blackflies in Ethiopia. In this study, we determined the habitat preference of blackfly larvae and their relationship with aquatic macroinvertebrate predators in the Omo Gibe river basin of southwest Ethiopia. Environmental and biological data were collected from 150 sampling sites during both dry and wet seasons in 2019. Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were used to identify factors affecting the o

We evaluated the real effects of pollutants through a multi-generation study. We tested whether short-term exposure (48 h) of successive (first and second) generations of Chironomus yoshimatsui neonates (<24-h-old) to two acetylcholinesterase inhibitor insecticides, pyraclofos, and pirimicarb, would change insecticide sensitivity and life-cycle parameters over four generations. Additionally, we tested whether acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity levels would be associated with this sensitivity change. Sensitivities (48 h EC50 value, using immobility as the endpoint) in chironomids (<24-h-old)

We examined the effects of fish predation on emergent insect-mediated methyl mercury (MeHg) flux across a gradient of MeHg contamination in experimental ponds. Emergent insects were collected from ponds with (n = 5) and without fish (n = 5) over a six week period using floating emergence traps. We found that the potential for MeHg flux increased with Hg contamination levels of the ponds but that the realized MeHg flux of individual insect taxa was determined by fish presence. Fish acted as size-selective predators and reduced MeHg flux by suppressing emergence of large insect taxa (dragonflies

The ability of the nonbiting midge Chironomus riparius to withstand long-term toxicant exposure has been attributed to genetic adaptation. Recently, however, evidence has arisen that supports phenotypic plasticity. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate if Chironomus riparius indeed copes with prolonged toxicant exposure through phenotypic plasticity. To this purpose, we performed a multigeneration experiment in which we exposed C. riparius laboratory cultures for nine consecutive generations to two exposure scenarios of, respectively, copper, cadmium, and tributyltin. Total emergen

The aim of the present study was to monitor mouthpart deformities of Chironomus plumosus (Insecta-Diptera) in Lake Trasimeno (2000-2010) in relation with sediment contamination by heavy metals, which is one of the main causes of deformity induction. In Lake Trasimeno, concentrations of heavy metals in the investigated littoral zone were low, in comparison with those of the central area. By contrast, the incidence of deformities was much higher in the littoral station (2006-2009) than in the central area. In the littoral zone, the deformities progressively decreased and by 2010 reached values s

Mechanistic models can substantially contribute to population risk assessment to assess effects on population and to increase the relevance of the toxicity parameters estimated at an individual level. We use four mechanistic models to change the scale from concentration to effects on individuals and from individuals to population with the midge Chironomus riparius: a kinetics model; an energy-based effects model, linking effects on the life cycle and compound body residues; a matrix approach to derive population growth rate; and an energy-based population model to derive carrying capacity. Meiotic metaphase I configurations and pairing behavior of the germ line-limited chromosomes (= Ks) in the chironomid Acricotopus lucidus were analyzed by chromosome painting using specific probes of the three soma chromosomes (= Ss) and of their individual arms. The Ks are derived from the Ss and possess large S-homologous sections. Beside regular K and S bivalents, we also observed frequently K multivalents, e.g. trivalents, mainly quadrivalents, but also penta- and hexavalents, composed of the same K type in metaphases I. Chiasmata predominately occur within the S-homologous sections, proba

Although Type I allergy to chironomids is well-known, allergic contact dermatitis caused by these cosmopolitan insects has not previously been reported. In the case we describe in this report, patch tests disclosed a delayed-type hypersensitivity to 4 different species of chironomids (larvae of Chironomus thummi, Chironomus plumosus, and 2 different species of Glyptotendipes) as the probable cause of airborne facial contact dermatitis. An additional asymptomatic immediate-type allergy to chironomids was demonstrated by scratch tests and specific IgE. The possible sources of exposure to chirono

Airborne insect particles have been identified as an important cause of respiratory allergies, including allergic asthma and rhinitis. In the literature, the significance of respiratory exposure to insect particles as a cause of occupational allergy has been well-documented. Indeed, many cases of occupational allergy have been reported including allergy to the larvae of flies and moths in anglers and occupationally exposed workers, to grain pests in bakers or other workers handling grains, and to crickets and/or locusts in researchers and workers in aquaculture companies. Furthermore, the prev

Attached-algae floways have tremendous potential for use in wastewater treatment because natural algal communities show high nutrient removal efficiencies, have low operating costs, and are easy to maintain. Algal wastewater floways may also serve as a sustainable option for producing renewable energy because algae grow rapidly, are easily harvested, and can serve as a source of biomass for biofuel. However, pests such as chironomids (Diptera) colonize open channel periphyton floways and their larvae damage the biofilms. While pesticides can control midge larvae, little information is known ab

Emerging aquatic insects have the potential to retain aquatic contaminants after metamorphosis, potentially transporting them into adjacent terrestrial food webs. It is unknown whether this transfer is also relevant for current-use pesticides. We exposed larvae of the nonbiting midge, Chironomus riparius, to a sublethal pulse of a mixture of nine moderately polar fungicides and herbicides (logKow 2.5-4.7) at three field relevant treatment levels (1.2-2.5, 17.5-35.0, or 50.0-100.0 μg/L). We then assessed the pesticide bioaccumulation and bioamplification over the full aquatic-terrestrial life c

Quorum sensing is the phenomenon, whereby bacteria use signal molecules to communicate with each other. For example, to establish a successful infection, pathogenic bacteria become virulent only when they reach a certain local concentration in their host. Bassler and others have highlighted the surprising observation that quorum sensing seems to repress Vibrio cholerae virulence factor expression (e.g. cholera toxin), in contrast to what has been observed for virulence gene expression in other bacteria. Here, I present a novel insight that may clarify the way V. cholerae quorum-sensing signals

A Tier I Sediment Ecological Risk Assessment of profundal lake sediment contaminated by diffuse pollution of heavy metals and POPs deposited from the atmosphere was completed. The concentrations of seven heavy metals and four groups of POPs (OCs, PCBs, PAHs, PBDEs) were determined in the profundal sediment of ten lakes in the United Kingdom and two sediment toxicity tests completed (chironomid survival and emergence and cladoceran survival and reproduction). The results showed that around half the lakes are at least moderately contaminated by Pb, Zn, Cd, As and PAHs deposited from the atmosphe

The acute toxicities of the insecticide terbufos and its major breakdown products individually, as binary mixtures, and in combination with the co-applied herbicide atrazine were evaluated using final instar larvae of the midge Chironomus tepperi. Terbufos, terbufos sulfoxide and terbufos sulfone were highly toxic to C. tepperi with mean 96-h EC50 values of 2.13, 3.64 and 2.59 μg/l, respectively. No interaction was observed between atrazine (25 μg/l) and terbufos or its breakdown products while the binary mixture of terbufos sulfoxide and terbufos sulfone exhibited additive toxicity. The high
