Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Chlamydophila psittaci. The most common presentation is atypical pneumonia. Three cases of pneumonia of varying severity due to psittacosis are described. All patients had a history of avian contact. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular detection of Chlamydophila psittaci in respiratory specimens. The cases showed good recovery with doxycycline treatment. Increased awareness of psittacosis can shorten diagnostic delay and improve patient outcomes.

A study of chlamydial infections was realized in New Caledonia during a period of one year. It concerned 1,023 patients: 775 adults and 248 children. It showed the high frequency of chlamydial urethritis in the male population, chlamydial cervicitis in gynecologic patients, chlamydial pneumonia and conjunctivitis in neonates and infants. The contamination between mother and infants was demonstrated several times. This preliminary study must be completed by an epidemiological exhaustive survey in order to determine the most exposed population and to take prophylactic appropriate actions.

We determined whether patients with chronic conjunctivitis in whom direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) tests revealed genus-specific chlamydial antigens (but not species-specific Chlamydia trachomatis antigens) were infected with Chlamydia psittaci or Chlamydia pneumoniae. Patients were divided into a case group of possible non-trachomatis chlamydial conjunctivitis and a control group of nonchlamydial conjunctivitis on the basis of examination and DFA testing. Species-specific primers were used to amplify C. trachomatis, C. psittaci, and C. pneumoniae DNA with polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Fo

Chlamydia pneumoniae, a Gram-negative bacterium, formerly named TWAR but identified as a distinct species since 1988, is now considered to be the most common agent of chlamydial infection in Scandinavia. C pneumoniae has a different tissue trophism from that of Chlamydia trachomatis, since C pneumoniae may infect bronchi and lungs, macrophages, monocytes, and endothelial cells. C pneumoniae, like other chlamydiae, has a slow, intracellular life cycle. An absence of reaction from the host cells, combined with scant tissual reaction owing to the low endotoxic activity of chlamydial lipopolysacch

INTRODUCTION: Recently, the incidence of chlamydial pneumonia caused by rare pathogens such as C. psittaci or C. abortus has shown a significant upward trend. The non-specific clinical manifestations and the limitations of traditional pathogen identification methods determine that chlamydial pneumonia is likely to be poorly diagnosed or even misdiagnosed, and may further result in delayed treatment or unnecessary antibiotic use. mNGS's non-preference and high sensitivity give us the opportunity to obtain more sensitive detection results than traditional methods for rare pathogens such as C. ps

The aim of the study is to determine the impact of Chlamydial seropositivity on atherosclerosis in a group of patient requiring coronary and/or carotid revascularization. A population of 30 diabetic patients (group 3) and 26 nondiabetic patients (group 2) with angiographically documented coronary and/or carotid artery disease were enrolled for the study. Volunteers from the relatives of hospital staff with no known disease (n=29; group 1) were included as the control group. Serum samples from the participants were assayed for cardiovascular risk factors including total serum cholesterol, trigl

We conducted a retrospective seroepidemiological study to evaluate the relationship between past chlamydial infection and primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC). Postoperative serum samples were drawn from 79 consecutive patients treated for PFTC in 1985-2000. For each case two controls were selected. Serum samples were analysed for IgG antibodies to different C. trachomatis serotype pools and to C. pneumoniae. Seropositivity in general or serum antibody levels to different C. trachomatis serovars or C. pneumoniae did not differ between PFTC patients and controls. The lack of association betw

Chlamydial trachomatis infection has been associated with adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes such as premature rupture of membranes, preterm birth, low birth weight, conjunctivitis, and pneumonia in infants. This review evaluates existing literature to determine potential benefits of antenatal screening and treatment of C. trachomatis in preventing adverse outcomes. A literature search revealed 1824 studies with 156 full-text articles reviewed. Fifteen studies were selected after fulfilling inclusion criteria. Eight studies focused on chlamydial screening and treatment to prevent adverse

About 70% of persons with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) show a seroresponse to a chlamydial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) epitope. Elevated titers against Chlamydia pneumoniae in sera from such patients point to an exacerbation in a chronic infection as does a change in the nature of immune complexes containing chlamydial LPS. The presence of antibodies to C. pneumoniae proteins in immune complexes suggests an intimate association of the pathogen with the vascular system. In the first prospective study, elevated antibody titers or immune complexes containing chlamydial LPS were an independent s

In recent years considerable progress has been made in understanding chlamydial infections. The spectrum of pediatric Chlamydia trachomatis infection includes neonatal inclusion conjunctivitis, infantile pneumonia, occasional respiratory or genital tract infections in older children and sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents. The role of maternal chlamydial infection in prematurity and in perinatal death is currently an area of active study. We outline the current knowledge of the biologic characteristics of C. trachomatis, the epidemiologic features of chlamydial infection, and the clin

The authors examined 130 newborns and nursery children from September 1999 till May 2003 from the Prague district for the surmise of chlamydial conjunctivitis. Chlamydia infections were detected in conjunctival smears. Chlamydia trachomatis was confirmed in 20 (15.3%) using ligase chain reaction and C. pneumoniae in 16 (12.3%) children using an indirect immunofluorescent method. Direct captures of chlamydial infections of newborns were included in the study. The authors had also examined 671 newborns in a maternity hospital from January 2002 till May 2003. Conjunctival scraping had been done i

Maternal chlamydial antibodies were determined in cord sera of 41 infants who developed neonatal chlamydial conjunctivitis and compared with the antibody profile of infants who had been exposed to Chlamydia trachomatis at birth by their isolation positive mothers but in whom conjunctivitis did not develop. No protective effect could be attributed to maternal antibodies transferred to the infants. Paired sera samples were collected from 18 infants with chlamydial conjunctivitis. Chlamydial IgM antibodies were detected in four of these 18 cases at the time diagnosis was established by isolation.

The associations between inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use and pulmonary infections remains controversial. Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) accounts for asthma exacerbations; however, there are no data regarding ICS effects on C. pneumoniae infections. Thus, we investigated whether fluticasone propionate (FP) or budesonide (BUD) could affect C. pneumoniae infection in vitro and in vivo, focusing on the possible mechanisms that lead to potential anti-chlamydial outcomes. We performed direct qPCR to detect C. pneumoniae growth in infected, FP-treated, and BUD-treated A549 cells. Furthermore,

The isolation of Chlamydia pneumoniae, especially from elderly persons, is generally not easy. Recently, we succeeded in isolating a chlamydial strain, which was designated KKpn-15, from a 57-year-old man suffering from acute bronchitis. It was compared with well established strains of C. pneumoniae, C. trachomatis and C. psittaci, and its biological properties, such as the morphology of elementary bodies (EBs) and inclusions, and the immunochemistry of EB proteins, were investigated. Based on the results obtained in the present study, it was confirmed that the new chlamydial strain, KKpn-15,

No relation between the occurrence of antibodies to chlamydial agents and asthma in children was found. In asthmatic children, the antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis occurred in 3.1% and to Chlamydophila pneumoniae in 22.7%, whereas in a control group of children without asthma or other allergic disease in 2.3% and 24.0%, respectively. The occurrence of antibodies of IgA and IgG classes to C. pneumoniae was also very similar; its rise was age-dependent. On the other hand, in the group of children in a pre-school age with respiratory tract infection, anti-chlamydial antibodies were demonstrate

Genital infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (immunotypes D to K) are briefly reviewed. Urethritis is not only the most important chlamydial infection in men, but is also the most common sexually transmitted disease. The complication of this form of nongonococcal or postgonococcal urethritis include prostatitis, epididymitis and arthritis. Urethritis and cervicitis are the primary infections in women, and may lead to salpingitis, peritonitis or perihepatitis. Chlamydial infection is transmitted to the infant at birth, causing conjunctivitis or pneumonia. The diagnosis and treatment of ge

A complement fixation (CF) test, a micro-immunofluorescence (micro-IF) test and an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) using Re-lipopolysaccharide as antigen were compared in the diagnosis of chlamydial infection in 136 mainly elderly patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia during a Chlamydia pneumoniae epidemic in Finland in 1986-1987. Chlamydial pneumonia was diagnosed in 58 (42.6%) of the 136 pneumonia patients; 44 (75.9%) of them could be shown by micro-IF to be caused by Chlamydia pneumoniae, three by Chlamydia psittaci and four by Chlamydia spp. Only 5 (11.4%) of 44 patients with Ch

We tried to verify whether the currently employed diagnosis and treatment of community-acquired pneumonia in children were appropriate. For this purpose, we created tentative criteria for the classification of pediatric community-acquired pneumonia. We classified the community-acquired pneumonia into ten categories: (1) bacterial, (2) concomitant viral-bacterial, (3) viral, (4) mycoplasmal, (5) concomitant mycoplasmal-bacterial, (6) concomitant mycoplasmal-viral, (7) chlamydial, (8) concomitant chlamydial-bacterial, (9) concomitant chlamydial-viral, and (10) unknown. Children aged 1 month to 1

A 13-year-old boy with serologically confirmed C. pneumoniae infection presented with pneumonia complicated by pericardial and bilateral pleural effusions. He had a large haemorrhagic pericardial effusion from which 1000 ml of fluid was aspirated over 10 days and a right haemorrhagic pleural effusion which required a chest drain and the removal of 700 ml over 5 days. The addition of clarithromycin to ceftriaxone appeared to enhance recovery. As far as we are aware, this is the first report in the English lite

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a spherical zoonotic pathogen with a diameter of ∼200 nm, which can lead to a wide range of acute and chronic diseases in human body. Early and reliable on-site detection of C. pneumoniae is the key step to control the spread of the pathogen. However, the lack of a current technology with advantages of rapidity, ultrasensitivity, and convenience limits the implementation of traditional techniques for on-site detection of C. pneumoniae. Herein, we developed a naked-eye counting of C. pneumoniae based on the light scattering properties of gold nanoparticle (GNP) under dar
