Chlorella vulgaris extract (CVE) was examined for its chelating effects on the myelosuppression induced by lead in Listeria monocytogenes-infected mice. The reduction in the number of bone marrow granulocyte-macrophage progenitors (CFU-GM) observed after the infection was more severe in the groups previously exposed to lead. Extramedullar hematopoiesis, which was drastically increased after the infection, was not altered by the presence of lead. Treatment with CVE, given simultaneously or following lead exposure, restored to control values the myelosuppression observed in infected/lead-exposed

In this study, we have investigated the effects of the unicellular-green-algae Chlorella vulgaris on the production of INF-gamma, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-10 in normal and Listeria monocytogenes infected mice. Our results demonstrated that in normal/non infected mice, CVE administration produced no effects in the levels of all cytokines studied. However, Listeria monocytogenes infection enhanced the production of INF-gamma and IL-2 at 48 and 72 h after the bacteria inoculation. Interestingly, the treatment with five consecutive doses of 50 mg/Kg/day of Chlorella vulgaris given previously to infection

An integrated biorefinery model was developed and experimentally validated for the multiproduct valorization of Chlorella vulgaris biomass through the sequential and polarity-driven extraction of high-value bioactive fractions. The extraction of C. vulgaris biomass was based on integration of mechanical disruption with selective aqueous, ethanol-based, and alkaline extraction steps. Six different extraction sequences were applied to high-quality biomass cultivated in an indoor photobioreactor system to obtain polysaccharides (Po), pigments (Pi), and proteins (Pr). The resulting fractions were

Industrial flue gas with high CO2 concentrations severely inhibits microalgal growth, restricting the practical application of microalgae-based carbon capture. This study systematically investigates the physiological responses of Chlorella sp. to elevated CO2 levels (6-90%) using pH-stat culture systems, confirming a significant pH-independent growth inhibition under hypercapnic conditions (≥50% CO2). Based on distinct physiological alterations in photosynthetic efficiency, key enzyme activities, and elemental composition, a metabolic model is proposed to illustrate the trade-off mechanisms be

Chlorella, a genus of single-celled green algae, is widely industrially cultivated as a dietary supplement ingredient due to its high protein content and various nutrients. In this study, the immune-stimulating effect of solvent fractions prepared from Chlorella vulgaris (CV) and Chlorella protothecoides (CP) was evaluated through the expression of immune-related factors, such as TNF-α and IFN-γ in T cells obtained from mice. Both Chlorella species showed immunostimulatory effects in hexane and butanol fractions, but CV increased TNF-α only, while CP elevated both TNF-α and IFN-γ. In addition,

Tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CF) induce a synergistic effect that alters the biochemical composition, leading to a decrease in the growth and photosynthetic efficiency of microalgae. But the current study provides a novel insight into stress-inducing techniques that trigger a change in macromolecules, leading to an increase in the bioenergy potential and pathogen resistance of Chlorella variabilis biofilm. The study revealed that in a closed system, a light intensity of 167 μmol/m2/s causes 93.5% degradation of TC and 16% degradation of CF after 7 days of exposure, hence availing the p

A novel anion exchange resin, quaternary ammonium-Chlorella vulgaris (QACV), was prepared by introducing quaternary ammonium groups onto dried Chlorella vulgaris as base material. Degrees of epoxy, amine and quaternary ammonium groups of QACV were measured. Water retention, optical microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry were used to characterize QAVC. The adsorption behavior of QACV towards Ag(CN)2- in different conditions was studied carefully. The results showed that QAVC was efficient to adsorb Ag(CN)2- at pH 9-11, and adsorption equilibrium was almost reached in 30 min. Bo

Microalgae such as Chlorella spp. have a long history of use in human food. A high lipid Whole Algalin Flour (WAF) composed of dried milled Chlorella protothecoides was evaluated for subchronic toxicity and genotoxic potential. Likelihood of food allergy potential was also evaluated by human repeat-insult patch test. In the subchronic study, rats were fed dietary levels of 25,000, 50,000 or 100,000 ppm WAF in feed for 93-94 days. No mortalities occurred. No treatment-related effects were identified for general condition, body weight, food consumption, ophthalmology, urinalysis, hematology, cli

This study investigated the effect of CaO2 pretreatment on sulfonamide antibiotics (SMs) remediation by Chlorella sp. Results showed that a CaO2 dose ranging from 0.05 to 0.1 g/g biomass was the best and led to higher SMs removal efficacy 5-10% higher than the control. The contributions made by cometabolism and CaO2 in SMs remediation were very similar. Bioassimilation could remove 24% of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethazine (SMZ), and accounted for 38% of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) remediation. Pretreatment by CaO2 wielded a positive effect on microalgae. The extracellular polymeric substances (

Photodegradation is an important transformation pathway for macrolide antibiotics (MCLs) in aquatic environments, but the ecotoxicity of MCLs after phototransformation has not been reported in detail. This study investigated the effects of roxithromycin (ROX) before and after phototransformation on the growth and physio-biochemical characteristics of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, and its toxicity were explored using transcriptomics analysis. The results showed that 2 mg/L ROX before phototransformation (T0 group) inhibited algae growth with inhibition rates of 53.06%, 54.17%, 47.26%, 31.27%, and 28.3

Wastewater rich in organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus may serve as a convenient source of carbon and nutrients for a year-long microalgae production. Scientific reports indicate that some single-cell microalgae such as Chlorella and Scenedesmus, are highly tolerant to wastewater environments and efficiently remove biogenic compounds. The aim of this study was to determine the possibility of using the effluent produced in the process of anaerobic degradation of whey as a culture medium for the multiplication of Chlorella vulgaris algae biomass and to characterise their growth efficiency an

In this study, Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) were cultured in cell culture flask supplied with intermittent CO2 enriched gas. The impact of CO2 concentration (from 1% to 20% v/v) on the growth of C. vulgaris cultured in domestic wastewater was exploited in various perspectives which include biomass, specific growth rate, culture pH, carbon consumption, and the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. The results showed that the maximum microalgal biomass concentration, 1.12 g L-1, was achieved with 10% CO2 as a feed gas. At 20% CO2 the growth of C. vulgaris suffered from inhibition dur

This study investigated the influence of light and temperature on Chlorella sorokiniana grown on a mixture of acetate and butyrate, two of the volatile fatty acids produced by dark fermentation. Exposure to light caused autotrophic biomass production (56% of the final biomass) and reduced the time to reach butyrate exhaustion to 7 days at 25°C from 10 days in the dark. For growth on acetate at the optimum temperature (35°C), the presence of butyrate reduced the growth rate (by 46%) and the carbon yield (by 36%). For successful microalgae growth on dark fermentation effluent, butyrate inhibitio

In this work, a mixture of chloroform and methanol (1:1, v/v) was applied to oil extraction from Chlorella sp. at 30, 40, 50 and 60 degrees C for 150 min extraction times. Kinetic studies revealed that the values of n and the rate constants were found to depend strongly on temperature. The activation energy was Ea = 38.893 kJ/mol, and the activation thermodynamic parameters at 60 degrees C were ΔS≠ = -180.190 J/mol , ΔH≠ = 36.124k J/mol and ΔG≠ = 96.128k J/mol. Both ΔH and ΔS yielded positive values, whereas ΔG was negative at 60 degrees C, indicating that this process is endothermic, irrevers

As an excellent biological resource, Chlorella has wide applications for production of biofuel, bioactive substances and water environment restoration. Therefore, it is very important to understand the photosynthetic physiology characteristics of Chlorella. Magnesium ions play an important role in the growth of microalgae, not only the central atom of chlorophyll, but also the cofactor of some key enzyme in the metabolic pathway. A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of magnesium deficiency on several photosynthetic and physiological parameters and the triacylglyceride (TAG)

The removal of nutrients by algae is regarded as a vital process in wastewater treatment, however algal cell activity can be inhibited by some toxic chemicals during the biological process. This study investigated the uptake of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺) and total phosphorus (TP) by a green alga (Chlorella vulgaris) and algal cell responses under the stress of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a representative for quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs, cationic surfactants). When the concentration of CTAB increased from 0 to 0.6 mg/L, the uptake efficiencies of NH₄⁺ and TP decreased from 88%

Pregnancy anemia and pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) are common and potentially dangerous disorder in human pregnancy, and nutritional status of pregnant women is one of the leading causes. Chlorella contains large quantities of folate, vitamin B-12 and iron, and can help improve anemia and hypertensive disorder. Our objective was to investigate the preventive effects of Chlorella supplement on pregnancy anemia and PIH in Japanese pregnant women. A total of 70 pregnant women were placed into the control group (n = 38) or the Chlorella group (n = 32). The subjects in the Chlorella group we

In this study, Chlorella vulgaris (CV) was examined for its chelating effects on the ability of bone marrow stromal cell layer to display myeloid progenitor cells in vitro in lead-exposed mice, using the long-term bone marrow culture (LTBMC). In addition, the levels of interleukin (IL)-6, an important hematopoietic stimulator, as well as the numbers of adherent and non-adherent cells were also investigated. Mice were gavage treated daily with a single 50mg/kg dose of CV for 10 days, concomitant to continuous offering of 1300ppm lead acetate in drinking water. We found that CV up-modulates the
