MR images of ex vivo arterial specimens immersed in 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (R-113) have improved signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio. R-113 has no hydrogen atoms, so it yields no proton signal; hence, the contrast between the specimen and its background is maximized. Seven male volunteers were exposed to atmospheric concentrations of either 1980, 4100 or 7630 mg m-3 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (FC113) for 4 h. Blood and expired air samples were collected during the exposure period and for several days subsequently and analysed for FC113. Blood and breath concentrations of FC113 were related to the administered dose with some variation between individuals. We report the occurrence of a partially reversible Parkinson-like extrapyramidal syndrome in a woman chronically exposed to vapours from an industrial solvent mixture based on trichlorotrifluoroethane and nitromethane. The fluoroalkane group of compounds has not been previously reported to produce such effects in man, but mixtures containing nitromethane may not be innocent. Under certain industrial conditions the conversion of nitromethane to methylisocyanide may result in toxicity particularly in the basal ganglia and cerebellum following chronic low level exposure.

The gas-phase reaction of CHF3 with CH4 has been studied experimentally and computationally. The motivation behind the study is that reaction of CHF3 with CH4 provides a possible route for synthesis of CH2=CF2 (C2H2F2). The U.S. is strongly considering regulating hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) due to their global climate change forcing effects. A drop-in replacement hydrofluoroether has been evaluated using a gate-to-grave life cycle assessment of greenhouse gas emissions for the trade-offs between direct and indirect carbon dioxide equivalent emissions compared to a current HFC and a historically used refrigerant. The results indicate current regulations being considered may increase global climate change.

During the course of dockside ship maintenance, a compartment was partially flooded with tricholotrifluoroethane gas. One sailor entered the compartment, collapsed, and was then rescued by two other men. All three victims then climbed a 11-m (36-ft) ladder and collapsed. They all experienced a rapid development of cardiac arrest. We report on the pathologic, toxicologic, and pathophysiologic aspects of the incident.

Thorough mechanistic studies and DFT calculations revealed a background radical pathway latent in metal-catalyzed oxidation reactions of methane at low temperatures. Use of hydrogen peroxide with TFAA generated a trifluoromethyl radical (•CF3), which in turn reacted with methane gas to selectively yield acetic acid. It was found that the methyl carbon of the product was derived from methane, while the carbonyl carbon was derived from TFAA. Computational studies also support these findings, revealing the reaction cycle to be energetically favorable.

A simple strategy avoiding the decomposition of a naked trifluoromethyl anion to difluorocarbene by a sterically very demanding organo-superbase without the help of a trifluoromethyl anion reservoir such as DMF is reported. The direct non-metallic trifluoromethylation of carbonyl compounds using fluoroform in the presence of t-Bu-P4 base afforded trifluoromethyl alcohols in high yields.

Experimental data from the literature for cross sections and rate constants for dissociative electron attachment to CF(3)Br, with separately varied electron and gas temperatures, are analyzed by a kinetic modeling approach. The analysis suggests that electronic and nuclear contributions to the rate constants can be roughly separated, the former leading to a negative temperature coefficient, the latter to a positive temperature coefficient. The C-X bond (X = Br, Cl) of α-haloketones is smoothly trifluoromethylated with the fluoroform-derived CuCF(3) reagent recently developed in our laboratories. This is the first nucleophilic α-trifluoromethylation reaction of carbonyl compounds and a rare example of CF(3)-C(sp(3)) coupling. The transformation employs only low-cost chemicals and cleanly occurs in up to 99% yield at room temperature, thereby providing an unprecedentedly easy entry to valuable 2,2,2-trifluoroethylketones.

The synthesis of a new family of 10-I-3 hypervalent iodine compounds is described in which the CF3 functionality participates directly in the hypervalent bond. These materials are accessible by nucleophilic ligand substitution at iodine using Me3SiCF3 in the presence of a substoichiometric amount of fluoride. The rheological properties of model aerosol suspensions at phase fractions of less than 5% w/v (phase ratio of 0.05) were investigated.
