Congenital choristomas of the oral cavity in children.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To review our institutional experience with oral cavity choristomas in children. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series and medical record review. METHODS: Medical records including clinic notes, operative reports, radiologic studies, and pathology specimens were reviewed. All imaging studies and pathology material were reviewed by a head and neck radiologist and pediatric pathologist, respectively. RESULTS: Sixteen patients (10 males and 6 females) with congenital oral cavity choristomas were identified. Mean age at diagnosis was 1.8 months. Location of the lesions

Retroperitoneal pulmonary choristoma in a newborn calf.

A newborn male Romagnola calf, who had died a few hours after birth, was submitted for postmortem examination. Necropsy revealed a 23 cm × 22 cm × 5 cm, pale pink, lobulated, elastic, partially fluctuant mass that protruded from the dorsal retroperitoneal space into the abdominal cavity, extending from the diaphragm to the left kidney. The mass consisted of mature pulmonary tissue and was consistent with a pulmonary choristoma. The gross and microscopic appearance of this rare tumor-like congenital lesion and the possible pathogenesis are discussed.

Lacrimal gland choristoma of the ciliary body.

BACKGROUND: Lacrimal gland choristoma manifesting in the ciliary body is quite rare. We report a case of lacrimal gland choristoma manifesting in the ciliary body, coupled with orbital cellulites, in an infant. CASE: A 10-month-old female infant with swelling and tenderness of the right upper eyelid. OBSERVATIONS: The results of ophthalmic examinations of the patient were consistent with orbital cellulitis. During the funduscopic examination, a fleshy mass was incidentally detected at the superotemporal portion of the ciliary body in the right eye. A local resection of the lesion was carried

Salivary gland choristoma of the middle ear.

Choristoma is a mass of tissue histologically normal for an organ or part of the body other than the site at which it is located. A rare case of ectopic salivary gland choristoma in the middle ear is described in a 14-year-old girl whose only symptom was a 55 dB conductive hearing loss. The left middle ear mass appeared whitish and was located behind the intact tympanic membrane. We first suspected it to be congenital middle ear cholesteatoma. Exploratory tympanotomy, however, revealed a salivary gland choristoma that adhered tightly to the facial nerve. Differential diagnosis and treatment of

Ultrastructure of an intraocular lacrimal gland choristoma.

An intraocular lacrimal gland choristoma which was at first mistaken for a medulloepithelioma (diktyoma) was studied with the electron microscope. The tumour did not contain cells with neuronal and glial differentiation as expected in a medulloepithelioma but it did contain acini, ducts and dilated ducts or cysts. The tumour, in fact, bore much resemblance to the lacrimal gland, in that it contained electron-dense serous granules, and at times, a myoepithelial cell was detected at the base of an acinus. The ductal and cystic elements were lined by a single layer of cells or by stratified or ps

A rare choristoma of the optic nerve and chiasm.

Two patients with a heretofore undescribed unilateral choristomatous malformation of the intracranial optic nerve and chiasm underwent craniotomy for partial resection of the optic nerve in the belief that the tumor was either a glioma or a meningioma. Visual acuity in the affected eye was reduced to 20/200 in one patient and to finger counting in the other. Chiasmal involvement in the first case was associated with a superotemporal field defect in the opposite eye. Ophthalmoscopy disclosed atrophic nerve heads in both affected eyes. Heteroplastic masses of smooth muscle and adipose tissue rep

Lingual osseous choristoma: report of three cases.

Osseous choristoma represents the dense, mature, bony tissue in an abnormal location. We reported three cases of lingual osseous choristoma, herein, a year after the report of eight cases in 1998. All three lesions were at or close to the foramen caecum. The lesions were smooth, round or lobulated and pedunculated in shape and stony hard in consistency. All of them were preoperatively diagnosed, based on the above unique clinical findings without any radiography. The lesions were simply excised without local recurrence.

Osseous choristoma of the tongue: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Osseous choristoma is a very rare, benign lesion in the maxillofacial region. It appears as a benign mass of normally matured bony tissue covered by the normal epithelium of the tongue. It is usually seen in front of the foramen cecum of the tongue. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice with an excellent prognosis and there have been very few cases of recurrence. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present two cases of osseous choristoma on the dorsum of the tongue. Case 1 was a 15-year-old Japanese girl who presented with a painless but gradually growing swelling on the dorsum of h

Osseous choristoma of the submandibular region: case report.

This report presents a case of osseous choristoma in the submandibular region of a 33-year-old female. Her chief complaint was painless swelling in the submandibular region. Panoramic radiography showed a well-defined, round, radiopaque lesion near the inferior border of the right mandibular angle. Coronal and sagittal tomographic images indicated a high-density area in the right submandibular region with no bony connection. The lesion was diagnosed as an osseous choristoma based on histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. A 1-year follow-up period was uneventful.

Teratomatous choristoma and its associated syndromes. Case report.

The literature on oral teratomata is reviewed, and a theory for the embryological basis for these malformations is presented. We present an unusual case of Class III (Schwalbe) teratoma, in association with a complete cleft of the hard palate. Corrective surgery was required in the neonatal period.

Epidermal Choristoma of the Tongue: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

We report a rare case of epidermal choristoma of the tongue in a 52-year-old female, presenting as an asymptomatic brown-to-black macule clinically resembling a melanotic macule. Excisional biopsy revealed abrupt transition from oral mucosal epithelium to epidermis-like stratified squamous epithelium with hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis, basal cell melanosis, and mild melanocytic hyperplasia, along with sebaceous adnexal structures in the lamina propria, confirming the diagnosis. Epidermal choristoma is an exceptionally rare developmental lesion of ectodermal origin, with nine oral cases repor

Complex Epibulbar and Corneal Choristomas in Mosaic RASopathies.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical features and management of ocular choristomas in mosaic RASopathy patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective single-center case review of all mosaic RASopathy patients. We evaluated for the presence of corneal and epibulbar choristomas and conducted a comprehensive analysis of the imaging, including operative microscope images, slitlamp images, and optical coherence tomography images. In doing so, we provide a precise description for these types of choristomas. RESULTS: Nine patients with mosaic RASopathies, 7 men and 2 women (3 with clinical diagnoses

Case reports of oral choristomas and a review of the literature.

Choristomas are proliferative growths that occur when normal tissue develops in abnormal locations and may resemble tumors. Oral choristomas commonly present as slow-growing, indolent, and firm masses. The diagnosis primarily relies on histopathologic examination. Given their tumor-like growth and developmental pathogenesis, it is critical to differentiate them from neoplasms. In this article, we present two clinical cases of oral choristomas, a cartilaginous choristoma, and an osseous choristoma of the tongue. We also offer a brief review of the literature discussing clinical presentation, mi

Cartilaginous choristomas in tonsillectomy specimen: A prospective analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Cartilaginous Choristomas (CC) are rare benign lesion in the head and neck. In our study, we aimed to share the findings we have observed in CC cases in tonsillectomy specimens in daily practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective analysis done at Department of Pathology, Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine between 2002 and 2018. All of the tonsillectomy materials fixed in 10% formaldehyde were followed up by sampling one side of the cross-sections if no macroscopically specific pathology was observed routinely. All the specimens were processed and embedded in

Malformations, choristomas, and hamartomas of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas.

Congenital and hamartomatous lesions of the gastrointestinal tract cause diagnostic challenges for surgical pathologists. Many of these are merely histologic curiosities, whereas others have substantial clinical implications because they herald cancer syndromes or associated anomalies. Although a comprehensive discussion of all developmental abnormalities that can occur in the gastrointestinal tract is beyond the scope of a single manuscript, some entities are more likely to be encountered by surgical pathologists, have important clinical consequences, or pose diagnostic difficulties. The purp

[Pancreatic choristoma in the gallbladder: report of two cases].

Pancreatic choristoma is the occurrence of normal pancreatic tissue in an abnormal location without any anatomic continuity with the main body of the gland. Although heterotopia is uncommon in the gallbladder and biliary tract, anecdotic cases of gastric mucosa, liver, adrenal gland and pancreas among other tissues have been described. We report an eight year-old male and a 22 year-old female, electively operated for symptomatic cholelithiasis. On pathology, a nodule identified as a pancreatic endocrine and exocrine choristoma, was found in the gallbladder wall of both patients. We employed im

Salivary gland choristoma of the middle ear. A review.

While head and neck surgeons are accustomed to recognizing malignancies in their practices, developmental lesions are much less often encountered, and as such are not as likely to be included amongst other (more aggressive) differential diagnostic considerations. One such developmental lesion is the choristoma, defined as an architecturally normal arrangement of mature tissues found in a location not normally host to such tissues. Choristomas composed of recognizable salivary gland tissue may be found in a variety of locations including the middle ear. Middle ear salivary choristomas are disti

Oral congenital cystic choristomas: a case report.

Solitary choristomas containing gastrointestinal mucosa occur rarely in the tongue and the oral mucosa and usually present as an asymptomatic mass. This report documents the occurrence of two congenital intraoral cystic choristomas in a 5-month-old male infant. The cysts were located on the dorsum of the base of the tongue and left floor of mouth anterior to the lingual cyst. Both cysts were lined by nonkeratinizing squamous epithelium and gastric, intestinal, and respiratory epithelium. The cysts were excised by an oral approach.

Foregut choristoma of the ileum, (adenomyoma)--a case report.

An ileal adenomyoma in a 7-year-old boy who presented with jejunoileal intussusception is described and the term "foregut choristoma" is proposed for this and related conditions, such as ectopic pancreas or heterotopic Brunner's glands in the gastrointestinal tract. The polypoid mass in the ileum of this patient was composed of cystically dilated glandular structures lined by a tall columnar epithelium resembling hepatobiliary or pancreatic ductal epithelium, hypertrophic and irregular smooth muscle bundles surrounding the glandular elements, and small amount of fibrous stroma. Reported cases
