Twenty strains of bacteria resistant to high concentrations of chromate were isolated from different ecological niches. They were able to reduce chromate to compounds of trivalent chromium--nonsoluble chromium hydroxide or soluble crystalline hydrates of trivalent chromium. The growth features of these microorganisms on media containing chromate at high concentrations (up to 20.0 g/l) are described. Besides chromate bacteria can reduce vanadate to compounds of V(4+) and Mo(6+) to Mo(5+). The best reduction takes place on the media where MPB. glucose or ethanol serves as the source of carbon. T

PURPOSE: To determine the nephritic toxicity of chromate after chronic occupational exposure.
METHODS: The environmental contamination was assessed by measuring the chromium (Cr) in 8-h airborne sampler. The integrated level of Cr was determined by Cr concentrations in the whole blood (WB-Cr) and the urine (U-Cr). The renal glomerular and tubule impairment was evaluated by determination of cystatin C (Cys-C) in the serum and microalbumin (mALB), urinary beta(2)-microglobulin (β(2)M), N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity in the urine.

A case of papular itching lesions after microsclerotherapy with chromated glycerin (CG) at a 72% concentration for telangiectases of the thighs is reported. An interesting case of acute poisoning by chromate compounds is reported. A 51-year-old man committed suicide by ingesting a fatal dose of sodium chromate solution. He unexpectedly lost consciousness 6 h after the ingestion and died approximately 20.5 h later. An examination of the blood showed noticeable hepatic damage and thrombocytopenia. 30 patients who had positive patch tests to potassium dichromate participated in a placebo-controlled oral challenge with 2.5 mg chromium given as potassium dichromate. 17 reacted to chromate but not to the placebo, 2 reacted to both chromate and the placebo, and 4 reacted to the placebo but not chromate. 7 patients had no reaction. A specific reaction to chromate was most common among patients with dermatitis of the hands and/or feet.

A series of 230 patients with skin disease and 66 men with no skin disease were tested with a battery of nine common sensitizing substances. Among the patients the incidence of positive reactions was 36%, whereas in the control series it was 7·6%. The most common sensitizing agent was potassium dichromate.
