A lipid mobilizing factor has been purified from a cachexia-inducing mouse colon adenocarcinoma (MAC16) using a combination of ion exchange (Mono Q), exclusion (Superose) and reverse phase hydrophobic chromatography. A case of haemolytic anaemia with elliptocytosis is described, in which a large part of the smaller (beta) subunit of the spectrin is truncated, and has an apparent molecular weight of about 214 000 compared with about 230 000 for the normal chain. Two beta-lactamases, penicillinase type I from Bacillus cereus and TEM-1 beta-lactamase from Haemophilus ducreyi, were immobilized on a Chelating Sepharose Fast Flow column loaded with Ni2+ in an active form. Flow-injection analysis of beta-lactams was performed by using an enzyme column reactor fitted into the enzyme thermistor. With both enzymes it was possible to monitor both penicillins and cephalosporins. Moreover, Michaelis constants of the TEM-1 beta-lactamase were markedly increased upon immobilization for all substrates, especially carbenicillin, cephaloridine, and cefoperazone.

The lipophosphoglycan-like (LPG-like) molecules of E. histolytica virulent strains are clearly distinct from those of the avirulent E. histolytica and E. dispar strains. Abundant 'LPG' levels are apparently limited to virulent strains, while lipophosphopeptidoglycans ('LPPG's) are common to both virulent and avirulent strains of E. histolytica and E. dispar. It is therefore conceivable that 'LPPG' performs a function that is essential to survival within the host, while the 'LPG' performs a more specific function related to virulence.

An extracellular agarase from marine bacterium Stenotrophomonas sp. NTa was purified to homogeneity. By size exclusion chromatography and SDS-PAGE analysis, the enzyme was determined to be a homodimer with monomeric molecular mass of 89.0 kDa. The antigenicity of 3 polysaccharides purified from culture filtrates of Mycobacterim tuberculosis by affinity chromatography using a concanavalin A-agarose absorbent was studied.
