Chryseobacterium indologene s ( C. indologene s) is a rare nonfermenting gram-negative bacillus that can lead to various opportunistic infections. However, postoperative central nervous system (CNS) infections in neurosurgical patients are uncommon. The authors report a case of CNS infection caused by C. indologenes following surgery for intracerebral hemorrhage. On postoperative day 7, the patient developed a high fever, altered consciousness, positive meningeal signs, and vomiting. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis suggested a bacterial CNS infection. Empiric treatment with vancomycin and m

BACKGROUND: Chryseobacterium indologenes is an opportunistic, multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacillus increasingly recognized as a cause of hospital-acquired infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Although rare, its intrinsic resistance to beta-lactams and its ability to colonize medical devices pose significant therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of C. indologenes hospital-acquired pneumonia in a 43-year-old HIV-positive patient with multiple comorbidities, including Kaposi sarcoma, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease requiring hemodial

A new natural IND-type metallo-beta-lactamase variant, IND-5, was identified in a clinical isolate of Chryseobacterium indologenes. IND-5 shared 92.8% and 92.4% amino acid homology with IND-1 and IND-3, respectively. Purified enzyme (pI = 8.8, M(r) = 25,000) was able to hydrolyze penicillins, some narrow- and expanded-spectrum cephalosporins, and carbapenems but not monobactams.

OBJECTIVES: The dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from the environment, including agricultural sources, is of increasing concern. In this study, we examined the antibiotic resistance profile and genomic sequence of a strain of Chryseobacterium indoltheticum obtained from an agricultural location.
METHODS: The multidrug-resistant bacterial strain POL15 was isolated from the wastewater of a livestock farm in China. Whole-genome sequencing was performed followed by bioinformatics analyses to identify integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) and ARGs. Mating assays were perfo

For the first time, we report the whole-genome sequence analysis of Chryseobacterium oranimense G311, a multidrug-resistant bacterium, from a cystic fibrosis patient in France, including resistance to colistin. Whole-genome sequencing of C. oranimense G311 was performed using Ion Torrent PGM, and RAST, the EMBL-EBI server, and the Antibiotic Resistance Gene-ANNOTation (ARG-ANNOT) database were used for annotation of all genes, including antibiotic resistance (AR) genes. General features of the C. oranimense G311 draft genome were compared to the other available genomes of Chryseobacterium gleu

Three novel orange, ultramicrobacterial isolates, UMB10, UMB14, and UMB34(T) were isolated from enrichment cultures inoculated with a melted 3,043 m deep Greenland ice core sample. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolates belonged to a single species within the genus Chryseobacterium. They were most closely related to Chryseobacterium aquaticum (99.3%), Chryseobacterium soli (97.1%), and Chryseobacterium soldanellicola (96.9%). Genomic hybridization showed low levels of relatedness between UMB34(T) and C. aquaticum and C. soldanellicola (19-30%) and C. s

INTRODUCTION: Chryseobacterium shandongense is a Gram-negative Flavobacterium bacillus with intrinsic multidrug-resistant properties.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present the first case report of human C. shandongense infection, relating to an implantable portal and catheter (port-a-cath) central line in a 5-year-old female with cystic fibrosis. The infection was identified using a Bruker MALDI-TOF Biotyper with BDAL (v12) of blood, which was cultured due to pyrexia and rigour following port-a-cath access. This report details the effective eradication of C. shandongense infection from the po

Bacteria belonging to the genus Chryseobacterium are ubiquitously distributed in natural environments, plants, and animals. Except C. indologenes and C. gleum, other Chryseobacterium species rarely cause human diseases. This study reported the whole-genome features, comparative genomic analysis, and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of C. arthrosphaerae ED882-96 isolated in Taiwan. Strain ED882-96 was collected from the blood of a patient who had alcoholic liver cirrhosis and was an intravenous drug abuser. This isolate was initially identified as C. indologenes by using matrix-assisted la

Chryseobacterium gleum (previously included in the Flavobacterium IIb species) is a gram-negative aerobe that is a source of nosocomial infections. An Ambler class B beta-lactamase gene was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli from reference strain C. gleum CIP 103039 that had reduced susceptibility to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins and carbapenems. The purified beta-lactamase, CGB-1, with a pI value of 8.6 and a determined relative molecular mass of ca. 26 kDa, hydrolyzed penicillins; narrow- and expanded-spectrum cephalosporins; and carbapenems. CGB-1 was a novel member of the molecula

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Chryseobacterium indologenes is an emerging pathogen causing challenging central nervous system (CNS) infections, for which there are no standardized treatment guidelines. A systematic review of the literature indicates that such infections are extremely rare. Although trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is the most frequently reported first-line therapy, its clinical efficacy is not universal, posing a significant therapeutic challenge. We present the case of a 25-year-old postpartum woman who developed MDR C. indologenes meningitis and a brain abscess after unde

Uranium-tolerant soil bacterium Chryseobacterium sp. strain PMSZPI moved over solid agar surfaces by gliding motility thereby forming spreading colonies which is a hallmark of members of Bacteroidetes phylum. PMSZPI genome harboured orthologs of all the gld and spr genes considered as core bacteroidetes gliding motility genes of which gldK, gldL, gldM and gldN were co-transcribed. Here, we present the intriguing interplay between gliding motility and cellular organization in PMSZPI spreading colonies. While nutrient deficiency enhanced colony spreading, high agar concentrations and presence of

BACKGROUND: Chryseobacterium spp. are environmentally widespread bacteria increasingly recognized as opportunistic pathogens in human and veterinary medicine, yet genome-scale determinants that may support persistence in host-associated microenvironments remain poorly defined. Isolates from anatomically specialized sites such as the ocular surface are underrepresented in comparative genomic datasets. METHODS: We performed integrated phenotypic and genome-resolved characterization of Chryseobacterium sp. NG-CE01, isolated from a bovine corneal infection. A high-quality hybrid assembly was analy

The genus Chryseobacterium and other genera belonging to the family Flavobacteriaceae include organisms that can behave as human pathogens and are known to cause different kinds of infections. Several species of Flavobacteriaceae, including Chryseobacterium indologenes, are naturally resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics (including carbapenems), due to the production of a resident metallo-beta-lactamase. Although C. indologenes presently constitutes a limited clinical threat, the incidence of infections caused by this organism is increasing in some settings, where isolates that exhibit multidru

A total of 118 patients with Elizabethkingia meningoseptica bacteremia at a medical center in Taiwan from 1999 to 2006 were studied. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 99 preserved isolates were determined. The incidence (per 100,000 admissions) of E. meningoseptica bacteremia increased from 7.5 in 1996 to 35.6 in 2006 (p = 0.006). Among them, 84% presented with fever, 86% had nosocomial infections, and 60% had acquired the infection in intensive care units (ICUs). The most common underlying diseases were malignancy (36%) and diabetes mellitus (25%). Seventy-eight percent of patients

As one of the most diverse habitats of microorganisms, soil has been recognised as a reservoir of both antibiotics and the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Bacteria naturally inhabiting soil or water often possess innate ARGs to counteract the chemical compounds produced by competitors living in the same environment. When such bacteria are able to cause infections in immunocompromised patients, their strong innate antibiotic resistance mechanisms make treatment difficult. We generated functional gene libraries using antibiotic-resistant Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Chryseobacterium spp.

A 20-year-old female mute swan (Cygnus olor) originally in a flock of free-living swans on a Long Island, New York, lake, was presented for facial swelling and decreased appetite. An adult male ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) was also presented to the same wildlife rescue center for bilateral lameness of 1-week duration. Once referred for veterinary evaluation and care, both species were diagnosed with septic arthritis and osteomyelitis caused by Chryseobacterium indologenes and treated with orbifloxacin until complete recovery. Chryseobacterium indologenes is infrequently diagnosed as a

The universal protease inhibitors of the alpha(2)-macroglobulin (alpha(2)M) family are evolutionarily conserved constituents of innate immunity, presumably because they guard organisms against undesired proteolytic attacks of a different origin. Here, we determined the primary structure of alpha(2)-macroglobulin from the hard tick Ixodes ricinus (IrAM) by sequencing of overlapping PCR products. Predicted disulfide and glycosylation patterns, post-translational cleavage and alternative splicing within its 'bait region' demonstrate that IrAM is closely related to the alpha(2)-macroglobulin from
