The distribution of NADPH-diaphorase activity was studied in the cichlid fish Tilapia mariae, during the first developmental stages by means of the tetrazolium salt technique. The reaction product was first found, 48 hours after fertilization (stage 10), in the cells of the olfactory placodes and in the superficial neuromasts. A faint positivity was seen in some hair cells of the otic vesicles. The epithelial cells of the most caudal part of the intestinal tract showed a strong labeling. At stage 12 (hatch), the reaction product was in addition detected in scattered enteric neurons surrounding

During in vitro incubation, prolactin release is inhibited in a dose-related manner by cortisol. This action is mimicked by the synthetic glucocorticoid agonist dexamethasone but not by other steroids tested. Perifusion studies indicate that the inhibition of [3H]prolactin release by cortisol occurs within 20 min. Cortisol (50 nM) also inhibits cAMP accumulation and reduces 45Ca2+ accumulation in the tilapia rostral pars distalis within 15 min. Cortisol's action on prolactin release is blocked in the presence of either the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 or a combination of dibutyryl cAMP and 3-isobutyl

Cichlid fishes inhabiting the East African Great Lakes, Victoria, Malawi, and Tanganyika, are textbook examples of parallel evolution, as they have acquired similar traits independently in each of the three lakes during the process of adaptive radiation. In particular, 'hypertrophied lip' has been highlighted as a prominent example of parallel evolution. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted an integrated comparative analysis between the hypertrophied and normal lips of cichlids across three lakes based on histology, proteomics, and

The origin of the extensive phenotypic divergence characterizing adaptive radiation could often be geographically localized and genetically simple. In a classic case of a trophically polymorphic cichlid fish (Herichthys minckleyi), we investigated alternative genomic processes that could have produced its extreme within-population variation in pharyngeal jaw tooth size. First, we generated a high-quality reference genome for its close relative (H. cyanoguttatus) to dissect the genetic architecture of this dental polymorphism. Then, using whole genome resequencing across the small Cuatro Ciéneg

In vertebrates, opioid peptides are thought to be involved in the regulation of reproduction; however, the significance of enkephalins in testicular function remains unclear. We examined the influence of δ-opioid receptor agonist leucine enkephalin (L-ENK) on the hypophysial-testicular axis of the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. Treatment with a low dose of L-ENK (60 µg) caused a significant increase in the numbers of primary and secondary spermatocytes and early and late spermatids, concomitant with intense immunolabelling of testicular androgen receptors, but did not significantly alte

Lateral preference in behaviors has been widely documented in many vertebrates and invertebrates. Such preferences are strange, puzzling, and on the surface, not adaptive. However, behavioral laterality may increase an individual's fitness as well as foraging accuracy and speed. There is little experimental evidence regarding the developmental process of laterality, and unsolved questions have perplexed researchers for several decades. Related to these issues, here, I review that the scale-eating cichlid Perissodus microlepis found in Lake Tanganyika is a valuable model to address the developm

In this investigation, we examined the influence of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a proopiomelanocortin-derived peptide, along the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad axis in a cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. Administration of α-MSH (40 µg/0.1 ml saline) for 22 days did not affect the number of stage I (previtellogenic) follicles but caused significant reduction in the mean numbers of previtellogenic (stages II and III), vitellogenic (stage IV) and preovulatory (stage V) follicles compared to those of controls. While the gonadosomatic index was significantly lower, the rate of f

Reproduction is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The first neuropeptide identified that regulates this function was the decapeptide gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Nowadays, in gnatostomates, a number of GnRH variants have been identified and classified into three different types: GnRH1, GnRH2, and GnRH3. Almost 30 years later, a new peptide that inhibits gonadotropin synthesis and secretion was discovered and thus named as gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH). In avians and mammals, the interaction and regulation between GnRH and GnIH neurons has been widely stud

BACKGROUND: Bones are mainly composed of calcium hydroxyapatite and a proteinous matrix. In this study, we focus on the bone matrix proteins, the fish osteopontin orthologous protein (osteopontin-like protein; OP-L) and SPARC, because the current knowledge regarding their expression is fragmentary or contradictory.
RESULTS: We first provide a comprehensive and detailed description of skeletal development in the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. Following this, we analyzed the expression pattern of OP-L and SPARC in detail during development. OP-L expression was only found in tissues that

The present paper presents ultrastructural details of chondrogenesis of Meckel's cartilage and of ossification of its associated peri- and parachondral bones in a teleost fish, the cichlid Hemichromis bimaculatus. We have distinguished four stages during chondrogenesis, each of which is characterized by specific cellular and matrix features: blastema, primordium, differentiated cartilage and cartilage surrounded by perichondral bone. The blastema is characterized by prechondroblasts and the lack of cartilage matrix; the primordium by chondroblasts and the onset of secretion of matrix of fibril

Two new species of Sciadicleithrum Kritsky, Thatcher and Boeger, 1989 are described from two cichlids from the Araguarí River, State of Amapá, northern Brazil. Sciadicleithrum edgari n. sp. from Satanoperca jurupari (Heckel, 1840) differs from all congeneric species in the morphology (hook-shaped, with middle process and distally bifurcate) of the accessory piece of the male copulatory organ (MCO). Sciadiclethrum araguariensis n. sp. from Crenicichla labrina (Spix and Agassiz, 1831) can be distinguished from all other species by a Y-shaped accessory piece of MCO. In addition to the description

Cichlid fishes are a textbook example for adaptive radiations, since they diversified into several hundred highly specialized species in each of three great East African lakes. Even scale-eating, an extremely specialized feeding mode, evolved independently multiple times in these radiations and in Lake Tanganyika alone, six endemic scale-eating species occupy this extremely specialized ecological niche. Perissodus microlepis went a step further, by evolving bilaterally asymmetrical heads with an intra-specific polymorphism where left- and right-headed morphs predominantly scrape scales from th

The saccus vasculosus is an organ present in gnathostome fishes, located ventral to the hypothalamus and posterior to the pituitary gland, whose structure is highly variable among species. In some fishes, this organ is well-developed; however, its physiological function is still under debate. Recently, it has been proposed that this organ is a seasonal regulator of reproduction. In the present work, we examined the histology, ultrastructure, and development of the saccus vasculosus in Cichlasoma dimerus. In addition, immunohistochemical studies of proteins related to reproductive function were

Dopamine is present in all vertebrates and the functional roles of the subsystems are assumed to be similar. Whereas the effect of dopaminergic modulation is well investigated in different target systems, less is known about the factors that are causing the modulation of dopaminergic cells. Using the zebra mbuna, Pseudotropheus zebra, a cichlid fish from Lake Malawi as a model system, we investigated the activation of specific dopaminergic cell populations detected by double-labeling with TH and pS6 antibodies while the animals were solving different learning tasks. Specifically, we compared a

BACKGROUND: The vertebrate brain is composed of several interconnected, functionally distinct structures and much debate has surrounded the basic question of how these structures evolve. On the one hand, according to the 'mosaic evolution hypothesis', because of the elevated metabolic cost of brain tissue, selection is expected to target specific structures mediating the cognitive abilities which are being favored. On the other hand, the 'concerted evolution hypothesis' argues that developmental constraints limit such mosaic evolution and instead the size of the entire brain varies in response

The evolution of sex chromosomes and their differentiation from autosomes is a major event during genome evolution that happened many times in several lineages. The repeated evolution and lability of sex-determination mechanisms in fishes makes this a well-suited system to test for general patterns in evolution. According to current theory, differentiation is triggered by the suppression of recombination following the evolution of a new master sex-determining gene. However, the molecular mechanisms that establish recombination suppression are known from few examples, owing to the intrinsic dif

BACKGROUND: While bilaterality is a defining characteristic of triploblastic animals, several assemblages have managed to break this symmetry in order to exploit the adaptive peaks garnered through the lateralization of behaviour or morphology. One striking example of an evolved asymmetry in vertebrates comes from a group of scale-eating cichlid fishes from Lake Tanganyika. Members of the Perissodini tribe of cichlid fishes have evolved dental and craniofacial asymmetries in order to more effectively remove scales from the left or right flanks of prey. Here we examine the evolution and develop

Recent studies with cyprinid and characin (superorder Ostariophysi) fishes suggest that purine-N-oxides function as chemical alarm cues (alarm pheromones) and that the nitrogen oxide functional group acts as the chief molecular trigger. To further test the hypothesis that the nitrogen-oxide functional group is evolutionarily conserved as an active component of the Ostariophysan alarm pheromone system, we exposed juvenile channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Siluriformes) to conspecific skin extract, hypoxanthine-3-N-oxide (the putative alarm pheromone) and a suite of structurally and function

Lateralized behavior ("handedness") is a trait observed across all vertebrates, including humans. As an adaptive trait involved in both intraspecific and interspecific interactions, it holds broad evolutionary significance. However, the molecular basis of its brain regulation-particularly post-transcriptional regulation-remains poorly understood. Perissodus microlepis, a textbook example in evolutionary biology and an endemic scale-eating cichlid fish from Lake Tanganyika, displays pronounced lateralized feeding behavior that is complemented by its asymmetric head, by which it bites the scales
