Non-cigarette tobacco cessation support in England: current provision, confidence, and barriers identified in a cross-sectional survey of healthcare professionals involved in smoking cessation support.

INTRODUCTION: While cigarette smoking remains the dominant form of tobacco use in England, a range of other tobacco products are also used. Evidence on demand for non-cigarette tobacco cessation support-and on providers' preparedness and barriers to offering such support-remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of professionals involved in smoking cessation support in England (n = 96). For each specific non-cigarette tobacco product (cigars, cigarillos, shisha, pipes, bidis, chewing tobacco, dry snuff, moist snuff/dip, and heated tobacco), the survey assessed awa

Birth-cohort patterns of e-cigarette and other tobacco use among adolescents in the US.

BACKGROUND: E-cigarette use has increased considerably among US adolescents. While many studies have described cross-sectional prevalence trends of youth e-cigarette use, less is known about cohort or generational initiation and use patterns. METHODS: We used data from the US National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) from 2014 to 2022 and age-period-cohort models to analyze age-specific patterns of e-cigarette use initiation and prevalence by cohort and calendar. For comparison, we also examined initiation and prevalence for cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco, using NYTS data from 1999 to 2

Tobacco Product Use among U.S. Adults, 2023-2024.

AbstractAnalysis of 2023-2024 National Health Interview Survey data suggest that prevalence of cigarette smoking among U.S. adults declined from 10.8% of the population in 2023 to 9.9% in 2024. Use of other tobacco products, including cigars and e-cigarettes, remained unchanged, and 18.8% of adults (47.7 million) used at least one tobacco product.

Phenotypic and genetic characterization of different modes of lifetime nicotine use in the All of Us Research Program.

Objective Existing genetic studies of nicotine consumption have largely focused on cigarette smoking. Different modes of nicotine use have varying use patterns and user characteristics that may reflect distinct environmental and genetic influences. This study aims to identify the shared and specific genetic risks for five nicotine use modes. Methods We performed a common variant multi-ancestral genome-wide association study (cross-ancestry N = 304,213) of five types of nicotine use in the All of Us Research Program: lifetime use of electronic nicotine (e-nicotine) products, cigars, tobacco in

Oral health risks of tobacco use and effects of cessation.

The purpose of this paper is to review the epidemiologic evidence for the effects of tobacco use and tobacco use cessation on a variety of oral diseases and conditions. Exposures considered include cigarette and bidi smoking, pipe and cigar smoking, and smokeless tobacco use. Oral diseases and disorders considered include oral cancer and precancer, periodontal disease, caries and tooth loss, gingival recession and other benign mucosal disorders as well as implant failure. Particular attention is given to the impact of tobacco use cessation on oral health outcomes. We conclude that robust epide

Pipe and cigar use, lung function decline and clinical outcomes: an analysis of the NHLBI Pooled Cohorts Study.

INTRODUCTION: Smoked tobacco is a leading risk factor for cardiopulmonary disease. Pipe and cigar use remains common among US adults, yet its risks remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: We analysed data from five pooled cohorts with adults enrolled from 1971 to 2011 with follow-up through 2018. Pipe/cigar use was defined by baseline self-report. Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV1/FVC ratio were measured by spirometry. All-cause mortality, coronary heart disease mortality and hospitalisation, respiratory-related mortality, and chronic obstructive

Protecting Children and Adolescents From Tobacco and Nicotine.

Significant strides have been made in reducing rates of cigarette smoking among adolescents in the United States. However, rates of e-cigarette and similar device use among youth are high, and rates of other tobacco product use, such as cigars and hookahs, have not declined. In addition, almost 40% of children 3 to 11 years of age are regularly exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke, and rates of secondhand exposure to e-cigarette aerosol have increased over the last decade. Pediatricians are uniquely positioned to help children, adolescents, and their families live tobacco-free lives. Actions by

Temporal Trends in Young Adult Cannabis and Tobacco Use in States with Different Cannabis Policies.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis legalization may impact both cannabis and tobacco use, given the high prevalence of co-use (including blunt use) among young adults (YAs) in the United States. The objective of this descriptive ecological study was to examine trends in YA cannabis and tobacco use from 2002-2018 in states that passed adult and medical use (AMU) or medical use only (MUO) cannabis laws during that time (N = 16). METHOD: Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we conducted a segmented regression analysis to calculate absolute percent change in past 30-day cannabis, blunt, c

Patterns of Nicotine and Tobacco Product Use in Youth and Young Adults in the United States, 2011-2015.

INTRODUCTION: As cigarette smoking has decreased among youth and young adults (YAs) in the United States, the prevalence of other tobacco and nicotine product use has increased. METHODS: This study identified common past 30-day patterns of tobacco and nicotine product use in youth (grades 6-12) and YAs (aged 18-24). Using data from the 2011-2015 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) and corresponding years of the Truth Initiative Young Adult Cohort Study (TIYAC), past 30-day use of the following products was assessed: cigarettes, e-cigarettes, any type of cigar, smokeless tobacco, hookah, and

Tobacco and tobacco smoke.

Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated a causal relation between smoking of cigarettes and cancer of the lung in man. Women smokers, cigar, and pipe smokers also face an increased risk for lung cancer. Prospective and retrospective studies have found a correlation between smoking of cigarettes, cigars, and pipes and cancer of the oral cavity, larynx, and esophagus and for cigarette smokers increased risks to develop cancer of the pancreas, kidney, and urinary bladder. Dose responses have been established between number of cigarettes smoked and cancer of the respiratory and upper digestive tra

Public Policy to Protect Children From Tobacco, Nicotine, and Tobacco Smoke.

Tobacco use and tobacco smoke exposure are among the most important health threats to children, adolescents, and adults. There is no safe level of tobacco smoke exposure. The developing brains of children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the development of tobacco and nicotine dependence. Tobacco is unique among consumer products in that it causes disease and death when used exactly as intended. Tobacco continues to be heavily promoted to children and young adults. Flavored and alternative tobacco products, including little cigars, chewing tobacco, and electronic nicotine deliver

Physical activity and tobacco use among high school students in the United States, 2015-2021.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between physical activity and tobacco use among adolescents remains unclear. We examined this relationship using nationally representative data from the United States (U.S.). METHODS: We pooled four years of cross-sectional data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (2015-2021). Participants were high school students (n = 49,857) in the U.S. Multivariate logistic regression models examined the association between measures of self-reported days of 60+ minutes of physical activity per week (0-7) and past 30-day use of combustible cigarette, e-cigarette, ci

Sexual minority substance use disparities: Bisexual women at elevated risk relative to other sexual minority groups.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies characterizing sexual minority substance use disparities have primarily compared lesbian/gay and bisexual individuals, respectively or in combination, to heterosexual individuals. In light of emerging evidence that bisexual individuals may have particularly elevated substance use risk, we examine differences in recent substance use between bisexual and lesbian/gay individuals using national survey data. METHODS: Data on 126,463 adults (including 8241 LGB adults) were from the 2015-2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Substance use outcomes included binge drin

Regenerative response of the rat tracheal epithelium after acute exposure to tobacco smoke: a quantitative study.

The regenerative response of the rat tracheobronchial epithelium after acute exposure to tobacco smoke was studied. Cigarettes were smoked automatically, and the smoke was diluted with air before being inhaled by the animals. Twenty-four hours after the animals were subjected to tobacco smoke, and with vinblastine as a metaphase-arrest agent, a wave of cell proliferation occurred. The intensity of the response was related to the type of smoke (it was more severe for cigarette than cigar tobacco) and depended on the concentration of smoke, but the timing of the response after moderate exposure

Smoking and the risk of early metastases from uveal melanoma.

Smoking is suspected of altering host immunity and may therefore hasten the development of metastases among cancer patients. The authors followed 946 patients with melanomas of the choroid and/or ciliary body who had been treated with proton beam irradiation and who had provided a smoking history during their evaluation before treatment. After a mean follow-up of 33 months, 98 patients were diagnosed with metastatic disease. Metastasis-free survival rates 3 years after irradiation were similar in association with never, past, and current cigarette smoking (86%, 89%, and 90%, respectively; P =

Pipe smoking in the United States, 1965-1991: prevalence and attributable mortality.

BACKGROUND: National pipe-smoking prevalence data have rarely been reported, and mortality associated with pipe smoking has not been estimated. METHODS: We analyzed National Health Interview Survey data from 1965, 1966, 1970, 1987, and 1991 to estimate adult pipe-smoking prevalence in the United States. For each of these years, we estimated pipe smoking-attributable mortality from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, and lung. RESULTS: From 1965 to 1991, the prevalence of current pipe smoking for men declined 12.1 percentage points (from 14

Effect of tobacco smoking on renal function.

Nicotine is one of many substances that may be acquired through active and passive smoking of tobacco. In man, nicotine is commonly consumed via smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes. The addictive liability and pharmacological effects of smoking are primarily mediated by the major tobacco alkaloid nicotine. High stress jobs favour repeated smoking and further reinforce addictive behaviours. There are elevated serum cadmium and lead levels in smokers resulting in glomerular dysfunction. Nephropathies are accelerated by nicotine with an increased incidence of microalbuminuria progressing to prote
