BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are handheld electronic vaping devices that produce an aerosol by heating an e-liquid. People who smoke, healthcare providers, and regulators want to know if ECs can help people quit smoking, and if they are safe to use for this purpose. This is a review update conducted as part of a living systematic review.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of using EC to help people who smoke tobacco achieve long-term smoking abstinence, in comparison to non-nicotine EC, other smoking cessation treatments, and no treatment.

BACKGROUND: Approximately half of high school students in the USA have used tobacco. Social anxiety can put adolescents at increased risk for smoking.
PURPOSE: This study aims to determine whether adolescents high in trait social anxiety report more cigarette use and greater urge to smoke before, during, and after friend interactions than do teens low in trait social anxiety.
METHODS: Four hundred two students who reported smoking more than once during high school were assessed approximately every 30 min during up to 84-day monitoring sessions.
RESULTS: Controlling for momentary anxiety, hi

STUDY DESIGN: The effect of cigarette smoking and smoking cessation on spinal fusion was studied in a retrospective review of 357 patients who had undergone instrumented spinal fusion.
OBJECTIVE: To document the widely assumed but unreported benefit of cigarette smoking cessation on fusion rate and clinical outcome after spinal fusion surgery.
BACKGROUND DATA: Cigarette smoking has been shown to inhibit lumbar spinal fusion and to adversely effect outcome in treatment of lumbar spinal disorders. Prior reports have compared smokers and nonsmokers, as opposed to comparing smokers and quitters.

IMPORTANCE: Cigarette smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, and infant mortality.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the probability of preterm birth among expectant mothers who smoked cigarettes before pregnancy and quit smoking at the start or during pregnancy.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed information provided on live birth certificates from 2011 through 2017 that were obtained from US states that implemented the 2003 revision of the US live birth certificate. In total, 25 233 503 expectant mothers who delivered live neo

Theory suggests that cigarette smoking is under stimulus control and that affect is a key trigger for smoking. A previous study (S. Shiftman et al., 2002) showed little relationship between affect and smoking, but this relationship could have been suppressed by the impact of smoking restrictions. The study evaluated these associations in a 1988 sample that was subject to few smoking restrictions. Smokers (N = 28) not seeking treatment used palmtop computers to record context and affect prior to smoking (n = 2217 observations) and also at random times when not smoking (n = 2,380). Adults who began smoking regularly in early childhood (before 10 years) face an especially high risk of edentulism if they continue smoking into adulthood. Comprehensive tobacco control policies should target early childhood, ultimately contributing to the prevention of subsequent edentulism and other noncommunicable diseases.

China is a major consumer of alcohol and tobacco. Tobacco and alcohol use are closely linked, with up to 90% of alcoholics having a history of tobacco use, and heavy smokers also tending to be alcoholics. Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), one of the most common and serious complications of chronic alcohol intake, involving hepatic steatosis, hepatitis, hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), has become one of the globally prevalent chronic diseases. An increasing number of studies have focused on the association between smoking and ALD and explored the mechanisms inv

After several years of declining tobacco consumption, the number of smokers in Germany is currently stagnating or rising again. The reasons seem to be manifold, e. g. stress caused by the pandemic with social isolation, rising cost of living and war in Europe. With tobacco use still widespread in the German population, evidence-based tobacco cessation is rarely implemented.According to recent studies, e-cigarettes are involved in the pathogenesis of lung disease, cardiac and vascular damage. In addition, their ingredients also have carcinogenic effects. However, clinical studies on long-term us

STUDY QUESTION: To what extent is cigarette smoking associated with reduced fecundability?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Current female smokers, particularly those who had smoked ≥10 cigarettes/day for ≥10 years, had lower fecundability than never smokers, but current male smoking and passive smoking in either partner showed little association with reduced fecundability.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Female smoking has been identified as a cause of infertility, yet there has been limited characterization of the dose and duration at which an effect is observed. Results for male active smoking and passive smoking

The aim of this study was to estimate tobacco smoking prevalence among psychiatric patients attended in care facilities in Brazil and assess associated factors. A cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted of psychiatric patients (N = 2,475) selected from 26 care facilities. Current and ex-smokers were compared to those who had never smoked. Odds ratios were estimated using logistic regression. The current and past smoking prevalence rates were 52.7% and 18.9%, respectively. Being male, aged 40 years or over, drug and alcohol use, unprotected sex and a history of physical violence were fa

There is little information regarding associations between suspected bladder cancer risk factors and tumor subtypes at diagnosis. Some, but not all, studies have found that bladder cancer among smokers is often more invasive than it is among nonsmokers. This population-based case-control study was conducted in Los Angeles, California, involving 1,586 bladder cancer patients and their individually matched controls. Logistic regression was used to conduct separate analyses according to tumor subtypes defined by stage and grade. Cigarette smoking increased risk of both superficial and invasive bl

Data from the United States and from several European countries show that patients with major mood disorders, schizophrenia and social phobia smoke at significantly higher rates than the general population. However, there are no published results on this field from Central Europe, including Hungary. In the present study, the rate of current and lifetime smoking of the consecutively screened outpatients with DSM-IV unipolar major depression (n=92), bipolar disorder (n=60), schizophrenia (n=80), schizoaffective disorder (n=42) and panic disorder without major depression (n=60) were assessed and

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between cigarette smoking and psychiatric symptomatology in an outpatient psychiatric population of adolescents.
METHOD: A retrospective analysis was done of 934 patient charts at an outpatient psychiatric centre.
RESULTS: 48.4% of the psychiatric sample reported regular smoking behaviour, which is substantially more than the 18.1% prevalence found in a local epidemiological study. In comparing smokers and non-smokers within the psychiatric sample, it was noted that smokers were significantly younger and scored somewhat higher on depression rating scale

During the past 30 years, tobacco use among adolescents has substantially increased, resulting in major health problems associated with tobacco consumption. The purpose of this study was to identify adolescent smoking behaviors and to determine the relationship among smoking, specific demographic variables, and health risk behaviors. The sample consisted of 93 self-selecting adolescents. An ex post facto design was used for this study and data were analyzed by using nonparametric statistics. Findings included a statistically significant relationship between lifetime cigarette use and ethnicity
