Epistemic agency in self-tracking: a conceptual literature review of quantified self as citizen science for health.

INTRODUCTION: Citizen science for health invites non-professionals into research, but the degree to which individuals control the knowledge-making process varies widely. Personal science-the self-directed, inquiry-driven practice associated with the Quantified Self (QS) community-represents a high-agency form of self-tracking in which the individual is both subject and scientist. Drawing on work on epistemic injustice, we use "epistemic agency" to describe whether a person exercises genuine control over inquiry rather than merely supplying data. AIM: To assess the utility of an agency-based f

The CIRCULAR model: advancing public health through citizen science initiated clinical and mechanistic research in atrial fibrillation.

Citizen science is a transformative approach to advancing health research by bridging the gap between researchers and the public. The Dutch CIRCULAR model, which addresses atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia worldwide, offers a unique example of applying citizen science in biomedical and public health research. The project was established to systematically include people with AF and their families as partners in research, ensuring that their lived experiences inform priorities, study designs, and interventions. A central role is played by the online health community of

Tracking domestication signals across populations of North American raccoons (Procyon lotor) via citizen science-driven image repositories.

North American raccoons are widespread across the contiguous United States and live in close proximity to humans (i.e. urban) and in rural environments. This makes them an excellent species for comparative work on the effects of human environments on phenotypic traits. We use raccoons as a mammalian model system to test whether exposure to human environments triggers a trait of the domestication syndrome. Our data suggests that urban environments produce reductions in snout length, which are consistent with the domestication syndrome phenotype. These results are crucial for the discussion of t

Citizen science reporting indicates geographic and phenotypic drivers of road use and mortality in a threatened rattlesnake.

Roads may influence the selection of phenotypic traits of wildlife. In particular, the likelihood of vehicle collisions with wildlife may vary depending on body coloration in contrast to the road, which may be exaggerated by cultural attitudes toward the species. The timber rattlesnake Crotalus horridus is a threatened species that varies widely in coloration, and their color pattern could influence thermoregulatory use of roads and visibility to motorists. Moreover, better-camouflaged snakes may have higher road mortality in areas where environmental interest is lower and, perhaps, negative a

"I am an air quality scientist"- Using citizen science to characterise school children's exposure to air pollution.

Children are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of air pollution. To tackle this issue and implement effective strategies to reduce child exposure, it is important to understand how children are exposed to this risk. This study followed a citizen science approach to air pollution monitoring, aiming to characterise school children's exposure to air pollution and to analyse how a citizen science approach to data collection could contribute to and enhance the research process. 258 children across five London primary schools attended air pollution education sessions and measured air po

Citizen science-based mapping of radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure in Europe : A proof-of-concept validation study.

Characterising population-level radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure from mobile telecommunications networks at fine spatial resolution has been limited by the cost and scale of conventional measurement methods. The ETAIN 5G Scientist app, developed within the ETAIN (Exposure To electromAgnetic fIelds and plaNetary health) project uses citizen science smartphone data to produce calibrated RF-EMF exposure maps for 4G/5G networks at 25 x 25 m 2 spatial resolution across Europe. As of 2026, the app had collected over 19 million measurements globally. We conducted a proof-of-conc

Utilizing citizen science to assess consistent individual variation in play behaviour of the domestic cat, Felis catus.

It is well known that domestic cats (Felis catus) have the potential to impact local vulnerable wildlife, and that individual cats differ in their ecological impact due to predation. However, less is known about how individual cats may differ in their behaviours with similar motivational involvement, such as in response to a moving, feathered object toy. Using an online questionnaire, we recruited participants in the United States to expose their cat (N = 87) to standardised behavioural assay trials using a feather wand toy, aiming to capture individual variation in response to the toy and the

Intra-individual genetic diversity of vaginal Lactobacillus crispatus revealed through citizen science-driven isolation and pangenome analysis.

AIMS: A vaginal microbiome dominated by Lactobacillus crispatus is associated with positive reproductive and sexual health outcomes, yet intra-individual genetic diversity within this species remains largely unexplored. This study characterized inter- and intra-individual genomic variation in L. crispatus strains isolated through a citizen science initiative and assessed implications for multi-strain probiotic development. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-three women participated in this citizen science project. Self-sampling resulted in 48 shotgun metagenomes. Twenty-two participants isolated thei

Case report, citizen science reveals the occurrence of Botflies (Diptera: Oestridae) in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

We present a case of a botfly larva (Gasterophilus intestinalis (De Geer, 1776)) that was removed from a horse's stomach during gastroscopy. Additionally, we provide a detailed yet unconventional perspective on the research of botfly presence in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Through citizen science, we confirm the occurrence of two species of Hypodermatinae, among which Hypoderma diana Brauer, 1858 is relatively common. In the subfamily Oestrinae, we confirmed the occurrence of three species. Cephenemyia stimulator (Clark, 1815) is very common, which suggests that this species could negativ

Citizen science identifies the effects of nitrogen dioxide and other environmental drivers on tar spot of sycamore.

Elevated sulphur dioxide (SO2) concentrations were the major cause of the absence of symptoms of tar spot (Rhytisma acerinum) of sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), in urban areas in the 1970s. The subsequent large decline in SO2 concentrations has not always been accompanied by increased tar spot symptoms, for reasons that have remained unresolved. We used a large citizen science survey, providing over 1000 records across England, to test two competing hypotheses proposed in earlier studies. We were able to demonstrate the validity of both hypotheses; tar spot symptoms were reduced where there we

Nationwide Occurrence and Exposure Assessment of PFAS in Australian Tap Drinking Water Using a Citizen Science Sampling Approach.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely detected in water sources, making contaminated potable water a direct and ongoing exposure pathway for the general population. In Australia, nationally comparable drinking water data remain limited. This study presents the first nationwide citizen science project of PFAS in tap drinking water using a broad targeted panel with an ultra-trace LC-MS/MS. A total of 117 Australian tap water samples were collected across eight states and territories and classified as urban, suburban, or rural. 75 PFAS were targeted, of which 65 were detected at l

The Role of Psychological Stress in Atrial Fibrillation: Completing the Translational Circle from Molecular Mechanisms to Citizen Science.

Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia, affects over 33 million people worldwide and is associated with increased risks of stroke, heart failure, reduced quality of life, and mortality. In addition to established cardiovascular risk factors, accumulating evidence suggests that psychological stress and stress-related physiological changes may influence AF onset, progression, and recurrence. However, stress remains an underexplored target in preventive cardiology. This review summarizes current evidence on the relationship between psychological stress and AF, examining perc

Urban Cycling Lab: A citizen science protocol for assessing and reducing exposure to environmental stressors among bike commuters.

Bike commuters are regularly exposed to environmental stressors that impact their health and well-being. The Urban Cycling Lab in Ljubljana, developed within an Urban Living Lab and citizen science framework, engaged stakeholders in assessing exposure to particulate matter and noise, and in co-creating strategies to reduce it. This citizen science intervention combined sensor-enhanced ICT tools with behaviour change theory to assess both environmental and behavioural aspects of exposure. Exposure assessment included low-cost personal sensors as well as chemical analysis in biological samples t

Mapping total microbial communities and waterborne pathogens in household drinking water in China by citizen science and metabarcoding.

INTRODUCTION: Access to safe drinking water remains a critical public health priority, as waterborne diseases continue to pose global health risks. In China, microbial contamination in household water supplies is of particular concern. Traditional culture-based monitoring methods are limited in sensitivity and scope, and scaling such efforts nationwide would demand significant resources. Comprehensive, culture-independent microbiome assessments are therefore needed to better characterize microbial risks in tap water. METHODS: To address this gap, we developed a cost-effective, citizen science

A Wearable Sensor Node for Measuring Air Quality Through Citizen Science Approach: Insights from the SOCIO-BEE Project.

Air pollution is a major environmental and public health challenge, especially in urban areas where fine-grained air quality data are essential to effective interventions. Traditional monitoring networks, while accurate, often lack spatial resolution and public engagement. This study presents a novel wearable wireless sensor node (WSN) that was developed within the Horizon Europe SOCIO-BEE project to support air quality monitoring through citizen science (CS). The low-cost, body-mounted WSN measures NO2, O3, and PM2.5. Three pilot campaigns were conducted in Ancona (Italy), Maroussi (Greece),

Uncovering host diversity and global distribution of Forcipomyia Meigen (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) ectoparasitism on Lepidoptera larvae using citizen science records.

Parasitic interactions play a central role in shaping insect diversity; however, many host-parasite associations remain poorly documented, particularly among Diptera. Species of Forcipomyia (Microhelea) are known ectoparasites of other insects, yet information on their host associations is still fragmentary. The Fuliginosa species-group is known to be ectoparasite of larvae of Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. In this study, we present the first global synthesis of ectoparasitism by Forcipomyia (Microhelea), Fuliginosa species-group, on caterpillars, integrating literature records with data obtaine

Tadpole Doctor: a UK-based citizen science project that identifies novel Perkinsea clades closely related to candidate amphibian pathogens.

Parasites of the Perkinsea lineage infect both unicellular eukaryotic and metazoan hosts. The Pathogenic Perkinsea Clade (PPC) has been associated with Severe Perkinsea Infection (SPI) and mortality events in wild tadpole populations across the USA and in captive European Tree Frogs (Hyla arborea) in the UK. To investigate the spread of this emergent disease and identify additional putative parasites, we launched a UK-based citizen science project called 'Tadpole Doctor'. Volunteer participants collected tadpoles, sediment samples from ponds suspected to contain tadpoles, or alternatively, sed

How can digital citizen science approaches improve ethical smartphone use surveillance among youth: Traditional surveys versus ecological momentary assessments.

Ubiquitous use of smartphones among youth poses significant challenges related to non-communicable diseases, including poor mental health. Although traditional survey measures can be used to assess smartphone use among youth, they are subject to recall bias. This study aims to compare self-reported smartphone use via retrospective modified traditional recall survey and prospective Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMAs) among youth. This study uses data from the Smart Platform, which engages with youth as citizen scientists. Youth (N = 77) aged 13-21 years in two urban jurisdictions in Canada

Our Voice in a rural community: empowering Colombian adolescents to advocate for school community well-being through citizen science.

BACKGROUND: Santa Ana is home to an Afro-descendant rural population of the island of Barú in Cartagena, Colombia. While a popular area for tourism, Santa Ana's population is affected by multidimensional poverty, precarious work conditions, homelessness, broken streets and sewer systems, limited quality education, and a lack of recreation and sport spaces. While Santa Ana's Community Action Board aims to unify efforts and resources to solve these problems, the state's capacity to meet the requirements of the Board is limited. METHODS: We evaluated the relationship between healthy lifestyles a
