Vaccine Confidence and Hesitancy at the Start of COVID-19 Vaccine Deployment in the UK: An Embedded Mixed-Methods Study.

Background: Approval for the use of COVID-19 vaccines has been granted in a number of countries but there are concerns that vaccine uptake may be low amongst certain groups. Methods: This study used a mixed methods approach based on online survey and an embedded quantitative/qualitative design to explore perceptions and attitudes that were associated with intention to either accept or refuse offers of vaccination in different demographic groups during the early stages of the UK's mass COVID-19 vaccination programme (December 2020). Analysis used multivariate logistic regression, structural tex

The popularity contest at work: who wins, why, and what do they receive?

In 2 studies, the authors investigated the popularity of employees at work. They tested a model that positioned personality in the form of core self-evaluations and situational position in the form of communication network centrality as antecedents of popularity and interpersonal citizenship and counterproductive work behaviors received from coworkers as outcomes of popularity. Data from 116 employees and 383 coworkers in Study 1 and 139 employees, their significant others, and 808 coworkers in Study 2 generally supported the model. Core self-evaluations and communication network centrality we

Birth rates and migration: an AI and One Health approach within the Italian National Health System.

This study examines the future stability of Italy's health and social systems in the context of demographic decline. The Italian healthcare system, grounded in a universalistic and public model, founded on the principle of equity, is undergoing a phase of instability. The COVID-19 pandemic represented a critical rupture, exposing systemic weaknesses, territorial disparities, infrastructural inadequacies, the rigidity of financing mechanisms and the lack of reform regarding citizenship rights for foreign residents. An inductive, interpretive approach was adopted, starting with data analysis fro

A Case-Control Study of Contextual Factors for SARS-CoV-2 Transmission.

Background: Knowledge on the settings and activities associated with a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is essential to inform decision-making. We thus designed a case-control study to identify relevant settings for community transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Portugal. Methods: We evaluated 1,088 cases, identified through the national surveillance system, and 787 community controls, recruited using random digit dialing. Sociodemographic characteristics, individual protective measures, and activities or visited settings were obtained through t

Exploring the Links Between Immigration and Birth Outcomes Among Latine Birthing Persons in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Birth outcomes are worse for birthing people and infants in the USA than other high-income economies and worse still for underprivileged communities. Historically, the Latine community has experienced positive birth outcomes, despite low socioeconomic status and other socio-political disadvantages, leading to what has been termed as the Hispanic birth paradox. However, this perinatal advantage and protective effect appears to have been shattered by unfavorable policies, structural conditions, societal attitudes, and traumatic events impacting Latine immigrants, leading to negative

Naturalization of the microbiota developmental trajectory of Cesarean-born neonates after vaginal seeding.

BACKGROUND: Early microbiota perturbations are associated with disorders that involve immunological underpinnings. Cesarean section (CS)-born babies show altered microbiota development in relation to babies born vaginally. Here we present the first statistically powered longitudinal study to determine the effect of restoring exposure to maternal vaginal fluids after CS birth. METHODS: Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we followed the microbial trajectories of multiple body sites in 177 babies over the first year of life; 98 were born vaginally, and 79 were born by CS, of whom 30 were swabbed wi

Understanding the role of age and U.S. acculturation factors on the relationship between allostatic load and cancer mortality risk in Hispanic Americans.

PURPOSE: Despite growing recognition of stress-related health inequities, the role of nativity and acculturation in shaping the relationship between chronic stress and cancer outcomes among Hispanic populations remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether nativity factors (United States (US) citizenship status and length of time residing in the US modify the association between allostatic load (AL), a measure of chronic physiologic stress, and cancer mortality among Hispanic adults. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort analysis using data from the National

Self-Organization of German-Speaking Displaced People in Austria Between 1945 and 1954: The Zentralberatungsstelle für Volksdeutsche.

This article examines the collective agency of German-speaking displaced people in Austria between 1945 and 1954, focusing on the Zentralberatungsstelle für Volksdeutsche (Central Advice Bureau for Ethnic Germans) and its role in shaping the country's postwar migration regime and national identity. In the face of exclusion from aid and citizenship, Volksdeutsche refugees organized collectively, leveraging their numbers and invoking the idea of a shared Habsburg heritage to achieve legal equality and integration. The study draws on archival sources to show how refugee lobbying, advocacy and all

[Preterm birth among Icelandic and migrant women in Iceland during 1997-2018 and main contributing factors].

INTRODUCTION: Migrant women often experience worse perinatal outcomes during pregnancy, birth, and puerperium than native women, but results regarding preterm birth vary. The objective of this study was to detect the prevalence and risk factors of preterm birth among Icelandic and migrant women in Iceland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was a population-based cohort study with data from the Icelandic Medical Birth Register. The cohort included all women who had a singleton birth from 22w0d to 36w6d of pregnancy in the years 1997-2018, a total of 89 170 women. The group was divided in two; wo

Multifaceted leaders: the double-edged sword effect of narcissistic leadership on employees' work behavior.

So far, most studies have focused on exploring the negative effects of narcissistic leadership. However, little attention has been paid to whether narcissistic leadership also has a positive effect. This study is based on Conservation of Resources Theory and reveals that narcissistic leadership has a double-edged sword effect. By using Mplus7.4 software the analysis of 450 employees and their direct leaders' pairing data collected in three stages, it is found that: narcissistic leadership has a positive effect on employee' hostility toward supervisor and psychological availability; hostility t

Experiences With Kidney Transplant Among Undocumented Immigrants in Illinois: A Qualitative Study.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Noncitizen, undocumented patients with kidney failure have few treatment options in many states, although Illinois allows for patients to receive a transplant regardless of citizenship status. Little information exists about the experiences of noncitizen patients pursuing kidney transplantation. We sought to understand how access to kidney transplantation affects patients, their family, health care providers, and the health care system. STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative study with virtually conducted semistructured interviews. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Participants were transp

Housing Instability and Policy Considerations for Equitable Aging in Place in Canada.

BACKGROUND: In this article, we apply a gender-based analysis plus framework to research the housing experiences of older, low-income adults living and aging in Hamilton. Low-income older adults with intersectional identities are at risk of not aging in place due to marginalization and housing instability. OBJECTIVE: Policy currently homogenizes the experience of aging by sidelining intersectional factors that have a bearing on aging well in place. The research aims to develop policy recommendations to address this gap. METHODS: Several methods captured the housing experiences of low-income

Comparison of early childhood vaccination coverage and timeliness between children born to Italian women and those born to foreign women residing in Italy: A multi-centre retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Compared to hosting populations, immigrants are usually considered more vulnerable to communicable diseases, many of which are vaccine-preventable. This study aims to estimate vaccination coverage (VC) and timeliness in children born to women from high migratory pressure countries (HMPC) and to evaluate factors affecting differences with children born to Italian women or women from advanced development countries (ITA + ADC). METHODS: We retrospectively analysed data of children born in 2009-2014 and resident in areas served by three local health units in the cities of Rome (n = 40

Playing dirty: the shady governance and reproduction of migrant illegality.

State authorities in Europe invest immense resources in what the EU insists on calling the 'fight against illegal migration'. Based on ethnographic research in two German cities, this paper shows that a tough approach towards illegalised migration can only be implemented through state practices that operate at the margins of, or even cross, the boundaries of what is legally permissible. This argument is developed through an analysis of informal practices that frontline staff in registry offices and migration administrations deploy to prevent, or at least disturb, illegalised migrants' attempts
