A climate impact attribution of historical rice yields in Sri Lanka using three crop models.

Sri Lanka's rice systems are subject to low yield events that threaten national food security. Extreme climate events during the cropping season are the main cause, but whether human-induced climate change has contributed to low yield events is an open question. Here, we present an impact attribution analysis that quantifies the effect of climate change to the average yield in 1981-2019 and the low yield event that occurred in 2017 using factual and counterfactual climate model simulations as inputs to three process-based crop models, DSSAT, APSIM and CYGMA. All of the crop models consistently

[Climate change and mental health. Position paper of a task force of the DGPPN].

Climate change and the resulting higher frequency of extreme weather events have a direct negative impact on mental health. Natural disasters are particularly associated with an increase in the prevalence of depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. Indirect consequences of climate change, such as food shortages, economic crises, violent conflicts and forced migration, additionally represent severe psychological risk and stress factors. Climate anxiety and solastalgia, the distress induced by environmental change, are new psychological syndromes in the face of the existential thre

Data and tools to integrate climate and environmental information into public health.

BACKGROUND: During the last 30 years, the development of geographical information systems and satellites for Earth observation has made important progress in the monitoring of the weather, climate, environmental and anthropogenic factors that influence the reduction or the reemergence of vector-borne diseases. Analyses resulting from the combination of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing have improved knowledge of climatic, environmental, and biodiversity factors influencing vector-borne diseases (VBDs) such as malaria, visceral leishmaniasis, dengue, Rift Valley fever, s

Reduced life cycle climate impact from manure through catalytic methane conversion and carbon dioxide removal.

Agri-food systems constitute around one-third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with roughly half consisting of non-CO2 GHGs, mainly methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Methods and technologies to mitigate non-CO2 GHGs are currently limited, which is a reason for agriculture being categorised as a hard-to-abate sector. This study examines mitigation of GHG emissions from manure storage headspace through oxidisation of CH4 emissions at low concentrations, using a thermal catalytic process with and without subsequent CO2 capture and storage (CCS). The technology is studied using a com

Harnessing deep learning to monitor people's perceptions towards climate change on social media.

Social media has become a popular stage for people's views over climate change. Monitoring how climate change is perceived on social media is relevant for informed decision-making. This work advances the way social media users' perceptions and reactions towards climate change can be understood over time, by implementing a scalable methodological framework grounded on natural language processing. The framework was tested in over 1771 thousand X/Twitter posts of Spanish, Portuguese, and English discourses from Southwestern Europe. The employed models were successful (i.e., > 84% success rate) in

The impact of natural climate variability on the global distribution of Aedes aegypti: a mathematical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti spread pathogens affecting humans, including dengue, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. Anthropogenic climate change is altering the spatial distribution of Ae aegypti and therefore the locations at risk of vector-borne disease. In addition to climate change, natural climate variability, resulting from internal atmospheric processes and interactions between climate system components (eg, atmosphere-land and atmosphere-ocean interactions), determines climate outcomes. However, the role of natural climate variability in modifying the effects of anthropogenic climate change

Environmental changes, disease ecology and geographic information system-based tools for risk assessment.

In recent years, several vector-borne, parasitic or zoonotic diseases have emerged or re-emerged in different parts of the world, with major public health, socio-economic and political consequences. Emergence of these diseases is linked to climatic change, human-induced landscape changes and human activities that have affected disease ecology. The authors illustrate geographic information system-based approaches to understand epidemiological processes and predict disease patterns. Continent-wide approaches are used to explore vector and host distributions and identify areas where substantial c

Edaphological and water quality conditions that limit agricultural development in semi-arid zones of Northeastern Mexico.

Salinity is one of the main causes of soil degradation, which reduces the capacity for biomass production. Naturally, saline soil is related to climatic, hydrogeological, and edaphic processes. Evaporite rocks are a potential source of gypsum and anhydrite in climates where annual rainfall does not exceed 400 mm. Like any salt, anhydrite contributes to salinity processes that reduce osmotic potential in plants, giving rise to water stress that reduces turgor in plants. In the Zona Media of San Luis Potosí, soil salinity is not homogeneous but rather varies spatially and is associated with soil

Evidence for photochemical production of reactive oxygen species in desert soils.

The combination of intense solar radiation and soil desiccation creates a short circuit in the biogeochemical carbon cycle, where soils release significant amounts of CO2 and reactive nitrogen oxides by abiotic oxidation. Here we show that desert soils accumulate metal superoxides and peroxides at higher levels than non-desert soils. We also show the photogeneration of equimolar superoxide and hydroxyl radical in desiccated and aqueous soils, respectively, by a photo-induced electron transfer mechanism supported by their mineralogical composition. Reactivity of desert soils is further supporte

Environmental variables drive the latitudinal decline in diversity and functional guild distribution of seed endophytic fungi in the invasive plant Bidens frondosa.

Seed endophytic fungi are increasingly recognized as key determinants of plant fitness, yet the ecological processes governing their biogeographic patterns remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the diversity, composition, and putative functional guilds of seed-associated fungal communities in the invasive plant Bidens frondosa along a latitudinal gradient from 28 to 41°N in China. Alpha diversity declined significantly with latitude, while beta diversity showed strong latitudinal structuring, with latitude explaining 45.7% of community variation. Community composition shifted from So

Between Ocean and Sea: population genetics and evolutionary history of Pinna rudis.

The recent expansion of Pinna rudis Linnaeus, 1758 in the Mediterranean Sea, following the collapse of its congener P. nobilis Linnaeus, 1758, raises questions about the full understanding of its evolutionary history, population connectivity and the role of hybridisation in a rapidly changing marine system. Here, we combine mitochondrial phylogenetics, molecular dating and population genetic analyses across the Atlantic and Mediterranean basins to reconstruct the demographic and evolutionary history of P. rudis. By integrating mitochondrial phylogeography and temporal inference across the Atla

Stochastic and deterministic processes shape the fungal communities and flavor characteristics during spontaneous fermentation of abernet franc.

This study elucidates the impact of vintage climatic variation on the interplay between stochastic and deterministic processes governing fungal community assembly during spontaneous fermentation of Cabernet Franc grapes and its consequential effects on wine flavor profiles. Employing high-throughput sequencing (fungal dynamics), HS-SPME-GC-MS (volatile metabolomics), Spearman correlation (fungi-flavorant relationships), and ecological null modeling (neutral vs. niche processes), the study tracked succession across vintages. Key findings revealed vintage-driven divergence: Cladosporium dominate

Integration of infectious diseases in climate governance in the Horn of Africa: A document review of climate strategies, policies, and action plans across four countries.

INTRODUCTION: A range of climate-sensitive diseases are endemic to the Horn of Africa, which is increasingly vulnerable to climate extremes. Global health agencies recognise the need to abandon siloed approaches to climate change and health by integrating health in climate policies, strategies, and guidelines. This structured document review aimed to examine the extent to which health, and specifically infectious diseases, are integrated into climate governance documents in this region, with a focus on Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda. METHODS: A desk-based search strategy identified clim

Modeling wind erosion susceptibility of Eastern Iran using machine learning.

Wind erosion and dust storms pose significant environmental and socio-economic threats to Iran's drylands, driven by both natural processes and human activities. This study addresses a critical gap by employing advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to generate high-resolution spatial susceptibility maps for wind erosion in the highly vulnerable eastern and northeastern regions of Iran. We evaluated ten distinct ML models using a comprehensive set of environmental predictors including climatic, soil, topographic, and geological variables to identify areas most prone to erosion. Our results

Rethinking Sustainability in Plant-Based Proteins: A Systems Perspective from Crop to Consumer.

Plant-based protein (PBP) foods are increasingly promoted as sustainable alternatives to animal-derived proteins, yet their environmental and nutritional performance depends on complex interactions among crop selection, agricultural practices, processing technologies, formulation strategies, food safety controls, and climate variability. This review synthesizes evidence across the entire plant-based protein value chain, examining how crop physiology, protein extraction and structuring, ingredient functionality, safety risks, and nutritional outcomes are shaped by both technological choices and

Delphi consensus validation of an integrated climate sensitive diabetes management model for climate vulnerable health systems in Iran.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is rising rapidly in Iran, where climate-related hazards such as heatwaves, sand and dust storms, and disruptions to food and medicine supply chains challenge continuity and quality of care. We sought to validate a climate-sensitive, health system-oriented management model for T2DM using a Delphi consensus process. Eighteen experts in diabetes, noncommunicable diseases and health systems rated 51 statements derived from the preliminary Integrated Iranian Climate-Sensitive Diabetes Management Model (ICDMM), mapped onto six domains aligned with WHO health system b
