The relationship between components of the biosafety incident response competence for clinical nursing staff: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Biosafety, which pertains to the prevention of exposure to biological hazards that could pose risks to human health, ecosystems, and the environment, has become a global concern. Nowadays, biosafety threats are widespread and long-standing, posing a severe risk to all human lives. A key measure in tackling biosafety issues is to clarify the competence of clinical nursing staff in responding to biosafety incidents. Nevertheless, little network analysis research has been done on the relationships between the components of clinical nurses’ biosafety incident response competence. PURPO

Clinical Impact of Skin Lesions in Mastocytosis: A Multicenter Study of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis.

Mastocytosis is a rare neoplasm characterized by the expansion and accumulation of mast cells in various organ systems. Systemic mastocytosis (SM) may or may not present with cutaneous lesions. To examine the frequency and clinical impact of cutaneous involvement, data on 1,510 patients with mastocytosis collected in the registry of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis were analyzed. Cutaneous involvement was found in 1,195 of 1,510 patients (79.1%). Of these, 286 had cutaneous mastocytosis, and 721 had SM with skin involvement. Adult patients with skin involvement who did not have

Does Simulation-Based Training Increase Athletic Training Students' Clinical Confidence and Competence in Performing a Cardiovascular Screening?

CONTEXT: The incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in athletes is higher than previously estimated. The need for increased screening to detect cardiac diseases in preparticipation physical examinations (PPE) has become a focus in athletic training. The use of simulation-based training in healthcare professionals' education has increased clinical confidence and competence, but research is limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine if a simulation-based educational intervention can increase athletic training students' self-reported confidence and clinical competence in conducting a cardiovascular screeni

Assessing the clinical competence of large language models for tobacco use disorder: A multi-domain expert evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use disorder (TUD) remains the leading preventable cause of death globally, yet fewer than one-third of users receive guideline-concordant care due to workforce shortages and training gaps. Emerging artificial intelligence (AI) systems, particularly large language models (LLMs), may help expand access to evidence-based cessation support, but their clinical competence remains insufficiently characterized. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the clinical accuracy, safety, guideline adherence, and communication quality of five leading LLMs across standardized tobacco-cessat

Clinical Competence for Youth Suicide: Use of Simulation in Pediatric and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Programs.

Approximately one in five adolescents in the United States has a mental health concern and suicide is the second leading cause of death in this population. It is vital to prepare nurse practitioner (NP) students with the required skills to assess and manage youth with suicidal ideation. Unfortunately, it is challenging for NP students to accumulate these critical competencies due to limited preceptors and the infrequent presentation of suicidality in certain clinical sites. Furthermore, the serious nature of a child in mental health crisis often requires students to take a passive role while d

Religious Literacy as a Clinical Competency in Clinical Pastoral Education in the USA: Reframing Hospital Chaplaincy Formation for Pluralistic Healthcare.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) has long shaped hospital chaplaincy through supervised clinical practice, pastoral reflection, self-awareness, and formation in the use of self. These strengths remain essential, but religious diversity in the USA increasingly requires chaplains to navigate beliefs, rituals, family systems, and moral frameworks that can affect medical decision-making. Using a theoretical and conceptual synthesis of interdisciplinary literature from chaplaincy studies, religion and health, palliative care, and religious literacy scholarship, this article examines the USA health

Variability and Misalignment in Pre-Clinical Veterinary Microbiology Education: Implications for Competency-Based Training.

Microbiology is fundamental to veterinary medicine, providing the scientific basis for infectious disease diagnosis, antimicrobial stewardship, vaccination, bio-security, zoonotic disease management, and public health. Despite its importance, little information exists regarding how pre-clinical veterinary microbiology is taught or how curricular content aligns with competency-based veterinary education (CBVE). A survey conducted in collaboration with the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) examined curricular structure, faculty composition, instructional methods, and co

Advancing quantitative clinical pharmacology competencies in Francophone Africa through an on-line learning framework.

Clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics are central to understanding patient response to new and existing therapies, yet access to training in Africa remains limited, particularly in francophone countries where language is a barrier. We report the design and implementation of a 12-week French-language online course combining asynchronous lessons with live interactive sessions. The inaugural cohort enrolled 72 students from Senegal (n = 37), Tunisia (n = 24), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (n = 11). While only one-third completed the full program, all survey respondents judged the c

A clinical evaluation and validation of a competing stimulus assessment targeting excessive functional communication responses.

Functional communication training (FCT) is a commonly used treatment for socially maintained challenging behavior. Although highly efficacious, increases in challenging behavior are often observed during schedule thinning within FCT. Prior research has demonstrated that providing competing stimuli in the extinction component of a multiple schedule reduced socially mediated challenging behavior during schedule thinning. Another difficulty practitioners may face is an increase in incorrect functional communication responses (FCRs) during extinction. In the current study, we sought to extend rese

Clinical Competencies for the Burn Speech-Language Pathologist: A Multidisciplinary Development and Delphi Consensus Study.

Clinical competency guidelines promote optimal, safe standard of care. While nationally established clinical competencies exist for burn occupational therapists and physiotherapists, no equivalent frameworks exist for burn speech-language pathologists (SLPs). To address this gap, we developed a burn-specific SLP competency tool. Led by the American Burn Association (ABA) Rehabilitation Committee, an expert panel of burn SLPs, Burn Therapists-Certified (BT-C) clinicians, and a physiatrist implemented a staged process. Current national and international practice guidelines were synthesized throu

Complex presentations of child conduct problems: Validation of a competency-based model for clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Children with conduct problems often present with a range of complex needs and many factors have the potential to complicate the delivery of evidence-based interventions for conduct problems. Little, however, is known about how to optimise the delivery of such interventions for complex cases, and there has been a lack of consensus regarding the features that reflect case complexity in treating child conduct problems. The aims of this study were to examine practitioner perceptions of the factors that contribute to case complexity in child conduct problems, and perceptions of the the

Culturally Competent Clinical Care for Older Sexual Minority Adults: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: As recent efforts to improve culturally competent clinical care (CCCC) have largely overlooked older LGB adults, we conducted a scoping review of position statements, empirical, and non-empirical research and suggest action steps. METHODS: We followed PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews Guidelines and searched for articles 1/1/11-3/14/19 (n = 1210) and other resources (n = 52), deduplicating, dually screening abstracts (n = 1,156), reviewing full-text (n = 107), and conducted a content analysis to identify distinct and cross-cutting domains (n = 44). From authoring to editing: a competency framework for trainee use of ambient AI clinical documentation.

Ambient AI has spread through clinical settings faster than curricula can adapt, shifting trainee documentation from authoring to editing notes. Authoring historically honed clinical reasoning for trainees, yet medical education is not prepared to develop the editing task now replacing it. We define this task as a teachable competency with four domains - error detection, clinical reconciliation, independent generation, and trust calibration - and describe how simulation can teach them.

The Future of Clinical Assessment in US Dental Education: Competency-Based or Entrustable Professional Activities?

In the late 1990s, US dental education embraced competency-based education (CBE), replacing time- and procedure-based requirements with an outcomes-oriented approach centered on demonstrated abilities and readiness for independent practice. Nearly three decades later, entrustable professional activities (EPAs) is emerging as an assessment framework. Do EPAs represent a new paradigm for dentistry, or are they an extension of assessment principles already embedded in competency-based dental education (CBDE)? This paper examines the similarities and differences between CBDE and entrustable profes
