Changing patterns of Clonorchis sinensis infections in Kyongbuk, Korea.

Studies were conducted from May, 1993 to April, 1995 to determine the changing patterns of infection by the liver fluke, Clonorchis sinensis, among residents and fish hosts in Kyongbuk Province. The infection rate among residents was 7.7% by stool examination. The rate in males (11.3%) was significantly higher than females (4.1%). Positive rate of intradermal test was 27.6% in the same population. The special type of a simple catalytic model was applied for the analysis of intradermal positive reactors by age and sex, and the equation was y = 0.4776 (1 - e-0.0375t) for males and, y = 0.2085 (1

Clonorchis sinensis and pancreatitis. Twenty-five after endemic exposure.

Clonorchis sinensis is an aften-cited but rarely reported cause of acute pancreatitis. We report a patient with Clonorchis infestation detected 24 years after leaving the endemic area, in whom the parasite is a likely cause of pancreatitis. Recognizing the popularity of the Cantonese style of Chinese cooking and noting relaxation of travel restrictions to the endemic areas, we feel Clonorchis should be sought in the obscure case of pancreatitis, especially in Orientals and travelers who have lived in the endemic area.

Clonorchis sinensis and cholangiocarcinoma: molecular mechanisms and biomarker advances.

Clonorchis sinensis, a common food-borne liver fluke in East Asia, is a Group 1 carcinogen strongly linked to cholangiocarcinoma. In recent years, molecular biology and multi-omics studies have revealed that this parasite drives chronic inflammation of the bile duct epithelium, epigenetic abnormalities, and the formation of precancerous lesions. Concurrently, circulating miRNAs, DNA methylation patterns, differential protein expression, metabolite profiles, and parasite-specific antigens have been proposed as potential early molecular biomarkers, which offers new avenues for the non-invasive d

Hepatic ferroptosis induced by Clonorchis sinensis exacerbates liver fibrosis.

Clonorchis sinensis (C. sinensis) is a food-borne zoonotic parasite link to liver fibrosis and cholangiocarcinoma. Limited understanding of its mechanisms in causing liver fibrosis has impeded therapeutic advances for C. sinensis-induced liver lesions. Ferroptosis, a novel form of cell death involving iron overload and lipid peroxidation, exacerbates liver fibrosis; however, its role in C. sinensis infection remains unexplored. In this study, ferroptosis were detected in C. sinensis-infected C57BL/6 mice as well as in AML12 cells stimulated by C. sinensis excretory/secretory products (ESPs). 1

Potential role of host autophagy in Clonorchis sinensis infection.

An in vivo mouse model of Clonorchis sinensis (C. sinensis) infection with or without the administration of autophagy inhibitor chloroquine (CQ) stimulation was established to assess the possible involvement of autophagic response during C. sinensis infection. Abnormal liver function was observed at 4, 6, and 8 weeks post-infection, as indicated by elevated levels of ALT/GPT, AST/GOT, TBIL, and α-SMA in the infected groups. These findings indicated that C. sinensis infection activated autophagy, as shown by a decreased LC3II/I ratio and accumulated P62 expression in infected mice. Interestingl

Case Report: Clonorchis sinensis Infection Associated with Eosinophilic Pneumonia.

Clonorchis sinensis, a trematode prevalent in East Asia, causes hepatobiliary infection. Exposure typically occurs through ingestion of raw or undercooked fish containing the encysted larval form of the parasite. Extrahepatobiliary disease has not commonly been described. In this case report, we describe an unusual case of C. sinensis infection associated with eosinophilic pneumonia. A middle-aged man from China presented with subacute cough and was found to have a bilateral diffuse eosinophilic pneumonia with associated peripheral eosinophilia. Stool microscopy revealed C. sinensis eggs, and

Evaluation Of Specific Ige Antibody In Clonorchis Sinensis Infection.

Serum IgE level and Clonorchis specific IgE in individuals with Clonorchis sinensis were determined by radioimmunosorbent(RIST) and radioallergosorbent technique(RAST) respectively. Highly significant elevations of serum IgE (P<0.001) and specific IgE antibodies (P<0.01) were observed in area from individuals with clonorchiasis. The mean values of serum IgE in individuals with clonorchiasis and healthy individuals were 2,372 IU/ml and 364 IU/ml respectively and specific IgE antibodies of both groups were 52.0 and 4.4%. A close correlation(r=0.9451) between serum IgE level and specific IgE anti

Clonorchis sinensis and Clonorchiasis: The Relevance of Exploring Genetic Variation.

Parasitic trematodes (flukes) cause substantial mortality and morbidity in humans. The Chinese liver fluke, Clonorchis sinensis, is one of the most destructive parasitic worms in humans in China, Vietnam, Korea and the Russian Far East. Although C. sinensis infection can be controlled relatively well using anthelmintics, the worm is carcinogenic, inducing cholangiocarcinoma and causing major suffering in ~15 million people in Asia. This chapter provides an account of C. sinensis and clonorchiasis research-covering aspects of biology, epidemiology, pathogenesis and immunity, diagnosis, treatmen

The importance of wild fish in the epidemiology of Clonorchis sinensis in Vietnam.

Preliminary findings of a high prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis in wild-caught fish in a North Vietnam reservoir (Thac Ba reservoir, Yen Bai Province) prompted a longitudinal epidemiological study of fish infections. Monthly collections of fish from September 2014 to August 2015 were processed for recovery of metacercariae; 1219 fish, representing 22 species, were examined. Seven species were infected with C. sinensis metacercariae. Four species, Toxabramis houdemeri, Hemiculter leucisculus, Cultrichthys erythropterus, and Culter recurvirostris, had high prevalence (31.1 to 76.7 %); metacerca

[A domestic cat infected with a large number of Clonorchis sinensis].

Adult Clonorchis sinensis not only occurs in human hepatic duct, but also in the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts of animals, including dogs and cats, thus causing clonorchiasis-one of important parasitic zoonoses. In present study, we dissected a domestic cat in which a total of 736 pieces of trematodes, identified as Clonorchis sinensis, were detected in the liver and cholecyst. The findings indicate that Clonorchis sinensis may be endemic in domestic animals in Wuhu area, and observe our awareness in prevention of the parasites in house pets.

[Excystation Time and Location of Metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis in Mice].

Metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis (20 per mouse) were given orally to Kunming mice. The mice were sacrificed at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 h after infection. The results showed that the excystation of the metacercariae occurred in the stomach and small intestine, mainly in the duodenum. Excystation occurred mainly at 2, 4, 8, and 16 h post-infection. Juveniles were found in hepatic duct on 0.5 h post-infection. The number of juveniles increased with the extension of infection time, which kept unchanged in hepatic duct from 32 h after infection.

Efficacy of artesunate and artemether against Clonorchis sinensis in rabbits.

Artesunate and artemether display promising clonorchicidal properties in rats. In this study, we assessed the efficacy of artesunate and artemether against Clonorchis sinensis in rabbits. Rabbits were each fed with 300 C. sinensis metacercariae. At day 28 postinfection, the rabbits were administered oral artesunate at doses of 7.5-120 mg/kg and oral artemether of 15-120 mg/kg. Two groups of rabbits were treated with single oral praziquantel at 75 and 150 mg/kg. Untreated rabbits served as controls. Fourteen days after treatment, all rabbits were sacrificed, and C. sinensis adults were collecte

Molecular cloning and characterization of a paramyosin from Clonorchis sinensis.

Paramyosin is a myofibrillar protein present in helminth parasites and plays multifunctional roles in host-parasite interactions. In this study, we identified the gene encoding paramyosin of Clonorchis sinensis (CsPmy) and characterized biochemical and immunological properties of its recombinant protein. CsPmy showed a high level of sequence identity with paramyosin from other helminth parasites. Recombinant CsPmy (rCsPmy) expressed in bacteria had an approximate molecular weight of 100 kDa and bound both human collagen and complement 9. The protein was constitutively expressed in various deve

Structural investigation on the effects of the herbs on Clonorchis sinensis in rabbits.

The effects of boiled water extracts of clonorchicidal raw drugs screened by the EPG counts in vivo on the structure of Clonorchis sinensis were investigated. The extracts of Cassia obutusifolia and Dictamnus dasycarpus did not seem to induce the morphological changes of the worms, and in those of Machilus thunbergii and Prunús mume, widening of bladder to lower level of seminal receptacle was visible without any other changes. Those of Inula helenium and Saussurea lappa, however, disclosed regressive and progressive changes as degeneration, atrophy, necrosis, dilatation, etc. of viscera of th
