Placenta autophagy is closely associated with preeclampsia.

Comprehensive biodiversity inventories of abyssal and hadal ecosystems remain rare due to the financial and logistical challenges associated with operating in the deepest parts of the ocean. However, deep-sea exploration programmes are increasingly generating extensive video datasets offering new opportunities to document biodiversity across broad depth ranges. Here, we present the most extensive visual biodiversity inventory assembled from an abyssal-hadal system to date, using imagery collected in the Nova Canton Trough (Central Pacific Ocean), combining observations from 99 baited lander de

Ultrastructural and immunocytochemical evidence of a colonial nervous system in hydroids.

BACKGROUND: As the sister group to all Bilateria, representatives of the phylum Cnidaria (sea anemones, corals, jellyfishes, and hydroids) possess a recognizable and well-developed nervous system and have attracted considerable attention over the years from neurobiologists and evo-devo researchers. Despite a long history of nervous system investigation in Cnidaria, most studies have been performed on unitary organisms. However, the majority of cnidarians are colonial (modular) organisms with unique and specific features of development and function. Nevertheless, data on the nervous system in c

Bioactive toxins from stinging jellyfish.

Jellyfish blooms occur throughout the world. Human contact with a jellyfish induces a local reaction of the skin, which can be painful and leave scaring. Systemic symptoms are also observed and contact with some species is lethal. A number of studies have evaluated the in vitro biological activity of whole jellyfish venom or of purified fractions. Hemolytic, cytotoxic, neurotoxic or enzymatic activities are commonly observed. Some toxins have been purified and characterized. A family of pore forming toxins specific to Medusozoans has been identified. There remains a need for detailed character

Self-organization of an organizer: Whole-body regeneration from reaggregated cells in cnidarians.

Cnidarians like the freshwater polyp Hydra and the sea anemone Nematostella, are famous for their enormous capacity to regenerate missing head or feet upon bisection. Classical transplantation experiments have demonstrated that the hypostome, the oral tip of the freshwater polyp Hydra, acts as an axial organizer. Likewise, transplantation of the blastopore lip of an early Nematostella gastrula stage embryo to an aboral position leads to ectopic head formation. Following molecular analyses have shown that Wnt signaling is the key component of this organizer activity. Moreover, when dissociated

A cell-based boundary model of gastrulation by unipolar ingression in the hydrozoan cnidarian Clytia hemisphaerica.

In Cnidaria, modes of gastrulation to produce the two body layers vary greatly between species. In the hydrozoan species Clytia hemisphaerica gastrulation involves unipolar ingression of presumptive endoderm cells from an oral domain of the blastula, followed by migration of these cells to fill the blastocoel with concomitant narrowing of the gastrula and elongation along the oral-aboral axis. We developed a 2D computational boundary model capable of simulating the morphogenetic changes during embryonic development from early blastula stage to the end of gastrulation. Cells are modeled as poly

Stings by the sea anemone Anemonia sulcata in the Adriatic Sea.

The sea anemone Anemonia sulcata is the clinically most important Actinaria in the Adriatic Sea. Between 1965 and 1980, 55 patients stung by this cnidarian were seen at the Pula Medical Center in Istria, Yugoslavia. The majority of injuries were inflicted upon the upper extremities, chest, or abdomen. Pain and the appearance of small blanched papules surrounded by slightly reddened and edematous bases were the usually initiating manifestations. Linear lesions were sometimes seen. Vesicles, sometimes filled with serous fluid, localized discoloration, and the formation of bullae sometimes follow

Ontogenetic dynamics of the subepidermal spicule complex in Nudibranchia (Gastropoda): the case of Onchidoris muricata.

Spicules are mineral-based biocomposites skeletal structures that are widely distributed among phylogenetically distant groups of invertebrates (Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Echinodermata). Subepidermal spicules are formed under the ectodermal epithelium and are characterized for all groups except mollusks (Aplacophora, Polyplacophora, Bivalvia), their spicules are located on the surface of the body. However, one group of mollusks (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia) have unique subepidermal spicules that have never been detected above the ectodermal epithelium and similarly to those characterized fo

Some like it hot: population-specific adaptations in venom production to abiotic stressors in a widely distributed cnidarian.

BACKGROUND: In cnidarians, antagonistic interactions with predators and prey are mediated by their venom, whose synthesis may be metabolically expensive. The potentially high cost of venom production has been hypothesized to drive population-specific variation in venom expression due to differences in abiotic conditions. However, the effects of environmental factors on venom production have been rarely demonstrated in animals. Here, we explore the impact of specific abiotic stresses on venom production of distinct populations of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis (Actiniaria, Cnidaria) inh

Retracing the path of planar cell polarity.

BACKGROUND: The Planar Cell Polarity pathway (PCP) has been described as the main feature involved in patterning cell orientation in bilaterian tissues. Recently, a similar phenomenon was revealed in cnidarians, in which the inhibition of this pathway results in the absence of cilia orientation in larvae, consequently proving the functional conservation of PCP signaling between Cnidaria and Bilateria. Nevertheless, despite the growing accumulation of databases concerning basal lineages of metazoans, very few information concerning the existence of PCP components have been gathered outside of B

A Case of Cellulitis Associated with Coral Injury.

Corals are the marine organism that belongs to the phylum Cnidaria, and are one of the common causes of superficial injury in the marine environment. In addition to acute reactions such as burning or stinging pain and erythema, coral injuries may present with complications such as foreign body reactions, bacterial infections, and/or localized eczematous reactions. A 23-year-old male presented with an erythematous edematous tender patch with centrally grouped vesicles on the left ankle; the injury had occurred during skin-scuba diving 2 days before. A biopsy of the lesion treated with hematoxyl

Metaproteomics reveals metabolic transitions between healthy and diseased stony coral Mussismilia braziliensis.

Infectious diseases such as white plague syndrome (WPS) and black band disease (BBD) have caused massive coral loss worldwide. We performed a metaproteomic study on the Abrolhos coral Mussismilia braziliensis to define the types of proteins expressed in healthy corals compared to WPS- and BBD-affected corals. A total of 6363 MS/MS spectra were identified as 361 different proteins. Healthy corals had a set of proteins that may be considered markers of holobiont homoeostasis, including tubulin, histone, Rab family, ribosomal, peridinin-chlorophyll a-binding protein, F0F1-type ATP synthase, alpha

Induced spawning with gamete release from body ruptures during reproduction of Xenoturbella bocki.

Xenoturbella is a marine invertebrate with a simple body plan, with recent phylogenomic studies suggesting that it forms the phylum Xenacoelomorpha together with the acoelomorphs. The phylogenetic position of the phylum is still under debate, whether it is an early branching bilaterian or a sister group to the Ambulacraria. Phylogenetic traits often appear during development, and larva resembling the cnidarian planula has been reported for Xenoturbella. However, subsequent developmental studies on Xenoturbella have been scarce. This is mainly due to the difficulties in collecting and keeping a

How to build single-celled cnidarians with worm-like motility: Lessons from Myxozoa.

Metazoans with worm-like morphologies across diverse and disparate groups typically demonstrate motility generated by hydrostatic skeletons involving tissue layers (muscles and epithelia). Here we present representative morphological, behavioural and molecular data for parasitic cnidarians (myxozoans) that demonstrate unprecedented variation in form and function, developing as cellular hydrostats. Motile elongate plasmodia characterise a remarkable radiation of species in the genus Ceratomyxa. The vermiform plasmodia inhabit gall bladders of a range of South American freshwater fish and exhibi

Development of macrociliary cells in Beroë. I. Actin bundles and centriole migration.

Differentiation of macrociliary cells on regenerating lips of the ctenophore Beroë was studied by transmission electron microscopy. In this study of early development, we found that basal bodies for macrocilia arise by an acentriolar pathway near the nucleus and Golgi apparatus, in close association with plaques of dense fibrogranular bodies. Procentrioles are often aligned side-by-side in double layers with the cartwheel ends facing outward toward the surrounding plaques of dense granules. Newly formed basal bodies then disband from groups and develop a long striated rootlet at one end. At th

Swimming sea anemones of Puget Sound: swimming of Actinostola new species in response to Stomphia coccinea.

Swimming as a response of the sea anemone Actinostola new species can be elicited as a result of contact with the submarginal surface of another swimming sea anemone Stomphia coccinea. However, Stomphia does not swim as a result of contact with Actinostola. In all other known respects, swimming is caused in both species by the same stimuli, including certain starfishes, a nudibranch, and electrical stimuli. No agent that causes Actinostola to swim has been detected in extracts, rubbings, or dried matter from Stomphia.

Marine Antimicrobial Peptides: An Emerging Nightmare to the Life-Threatening Pathogens.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens due to improper usage of conventional antibiotics has created a global health crisis. Alternatives to antibiotics being an urgent need, the scientific community is forced to search for new antimicrobials. This exploration has led to the discovery of antimicrobial peptides, a group of small peptides occurring in different phyla such as Porifera, Cnidaria, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata, and Chordata, as a component of their innate immune system. The marine environment, possessing immense diversity of organisms, is undoubtedly one of

Chemistry, histochemistry and microscopy of the organic matrix of spicules from a gorgonian coral. Relationship to alcian blue staining and calcium binding.

Alcian blue dye normally binds to polyanionic, polymeric substances. Such structures are often associated with calcium binding portions of the organic matrix in calcifying tissues. The organic matrix of spicules prepared from the gorgonian Pseudoplexaura flagellosa (Houttuyn) is alcianophilic. The dye is very tightly bound to the lipoid portion of the insoluble spicule matrix. No acidic substances (sulfated or acidic polysaccharides or phospholipids) were demonstrable in this material, suggesting an unusual but unknown interaction between dye and substrate. On a microscopical basis, inclusion
