Nosocomial coagulase-negative staphylococci in Belgrade: between Scylla and Charybdis.

INTRODUCTION: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are increasingly resistant nosocomial pathogens. We aimed to analyze the prevalence of CoNS isolates in clinical settings, the evolution of antimicrobial resistance of CoNS, and antibiotic consumption in a hospital. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective cohort study was carried out at a tertiary healthcare facility over 17 months. Identification of isolated cultures and antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed using the Vitek2 system. Of 1,217 isolates, 209 were obtained from 193 patients who had symptoms of nosocomial infections. Data w

Extensive multidrug resistance of coagulase-negative staphylococci in medical students.

Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from the nasal mucosa of medical students were examined for susceptibility to 16 antimicrobial agents. No methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was isolated, while MRCNS was present in 23.5% of the medical students. CNS exhibited significantly more resistance to antimicrobial agents such as gentamicin, in addition to oxacillin, compared to S. aureus, and 13.1% of the CNS strains (mostly MRCNS) were multidrug-resistant (to five or more drugs). In contrast, ampicillin resistance was higher in S. aureus. The rate of hospit

Slime production by coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated in chronic blepharitis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of slime-producing strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) on non-ulcerative blepharitis. Formerly considered harmless organisms, CNS are now recognised as opportunistic pathogens. Although these microorganisms are a component of normal conjunctival flora, they often produce the typical signs and symptoms of chronic staphylococcal blepharoconjunctivitis. Certain strains produce a polysaccharide extracellular material called "slime". Slime production is considered to be associated with the virulence of the organism. MET

Coagulase-negative staphylococcal sternal wound infections after open heart operations.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci are commonly isolated from wounds of patients after median sternotomy; however, the epidemiology of these infections is poorly described and the morbidity, mortality, and cost of care remain undefined. METHODS: Retrospectively, we studied all patients with sternal wound infections attributable to coagulase-negative staphylococci after 22,180 open heart procedures performed at the Cleveland Clinic between January 1, 1988, and December 31, 1994 (84 months). In an assessment of potential risk factors for sternal wound infections caused by coagulase-ne

Epidemiologic markers of pediatric infections caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci.

Several epidemiologic markers (species, slime production and antimicrobial susceptibility) were examined for 256 isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci (C-S) obtained from clinical specimens in a 1-year period. The medical records of the 169 pediatric patients from whom the C-S were obtained were reviewed and divided into infected (N = 11) and uninfected (N = 158) groups. The phenotypic traits of strains associated with infection included: (1) slime production (P = 0.014); (2) slime-positive Staphylococcus epidermidis (P = 0.002); and (3) resistance to penicillin (P = 0.03), oxacillin (P

Antimicrobial susceptibility of coagulase-positive staphylococci isolated from Louisiana dogs.

Disk diffusion susceptibility tests were done on 1,178 clinical strains of coagulase-positive staphylococci (CPS) isolated from dogs during a 7-year period. Relative decreases of 7% to 33% were found in the percentages of CPS sensitive to 8 antimicrobics. Relative percentages of CPS sensitive to 9 other antimicrobics were increased or decreased less than 5%. Sensitivity to the beta-lactam antibiotics showed the least relative change. Regression analysis demonstrated that the greatest change in percentage sensitivity of CPS occurred to gentamicin and cephalothin and the least change occurred to

The effectiveness of lysostaphin therapy for experimental coagulase-negative Staphylococcus endophthalmitis.

PURPOSE: To quantitatively determine the effectiveness of lysostaphin therapy for experimental endophthalmitis mediated by coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species, the leading cause of postsurgical endophthalmitis. METHODS: Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of lysostaphin were determined for 54 isolates representing the following species: S. epidermidis, S. warneri, S. haemolyticus, S. cohnii, S. simulans, and S. capitis. The effectiveness of lysostaphin therapy was tested in an experimental model of endophthalmitis by intravitreally injecting log phase bacteria (100 colony-forming un

Validation of the Proposed Definition for Complicated Coagulase-negative Staphylococcal Bacteremia.

BACKGROUND: A new definition for complicated coagulase-negative staphylococcal (CoNS) bacteremia was recently proposed. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of mortality in patients with CoNS bacteremia and evaluate the proposed definition of complicated bacteremia. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at the Lausanne University Hospital, Switzerland (2015-2023) and included adult patients with CoNS bacteremia. RESULTS: During the study period, 326 episodes of CoNS bacteremia were included, with 250 (77%) episodes involving Staphylococcus epidermidis. Most infections w

A narrative review of coagulase-negative staphylococci in diabetic foot infections.

SUMMARYCoagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are a group of bacteria commonly found on human skin and mucous membranes. Traditionally regarded as low-virulence microorganisms, they have gained recognition as significant pathogens in healthcare-associated infections, particularly among immunocompromised individuals and patients with indwelling medical devices. In diabetic foot infections (DFIs), CoNS can play a substantial role, particularly following previous antibiotic treatments or in the presence of indwelling devices. DFIs are usually polymicrobial, involving a mixture of aerobic and ana

Coagulase-negative staphylococci are the main causes of bacterial meningitis in duck.

Since September 2018, serious meningitis has been found on some breeding-duck farms in Shandong Province, China. A large number of ducks exhibit severe neurological symptoms. The ducks were randomly selected for laboratory testing. Duck brain samples were collected using standard sterile techniques, and the staphylococci isolates were detected in 404 (70.14%) out of 576 brain samples. A total of 525 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) strains were isolated, including 6 species: Staphylococcus sciuri (S. sciuri) (67.24%, 353/525), Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) (9.71%, 51/525),

Review of Clinically and Epidemiologically Relevant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci in Africa.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have engendered substantial interest in recent years as pathogenic causes of infections in both human and veterinary medicine, especially in the immunocompromised, critically ill, long-term hospitalized and in those harboring invasive medical devices such as catheters. They have been implicated in infections such as urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections, and invasive device-related infections, and are responsible for substantial economic losses in livestock production. The advancement of diagnostic techniques has increased our understanding of

Evaluation of HiaureusTM Coagulase Confirmation Kit in Identification of Staphylococcus aureus.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus is a facultative anaerobic Gram positive coccal bacterium whose incidence ranges to different infections. It is a cause of various uncomplicated skin infections, abscesses, septicaemia/bacteraemia, gastroenteritis, endocarditis, toxic shock syndrome and food intoxications. Various methods with varied time, sensitivities, specificities and costs are available, but may not be used as a reliable test for the identification and differentiation of S. aureus. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate newer tests. AIM: To compare the conventional tests with a commerc

A Novel Approach Targeting Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcal Infections: Rifabutin's Antibacterial Potential.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are opportunistic pathogens that pose a significant chal-lenge in healthcare settings, particularly among patients with indwelling medical devices. Their ability to form biofilms and exhibit resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, including methicillin, limits treatment options. The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant CoNS necessitates alternative therapeutic strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of rifabutin against clinical isolates of CoNS, including Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus sap
