Influence of combustion-derived ash composition on heterogeneous SO2-NO2 conversion under simulated atmospheric conditions.

Secondary inorganic aerosols, particularly sulfate and nitrate, are major components of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and play a key role in air quality degradation. Although heterogeneous SO2-NO2 reactions have been extensively studied on single mineral oxides, the behavior of combustion-derived ash particles remains insufficiently understood because of their complex multi-component structures. In this study, herbaceous biomass (HB), woody biomass (WB), sewage sludge (SS-GC), and coal-derived ashes (Coal-WH, Coal-MHU, Coal-CEN) were characterized to evaluate compositional variability among

Arsenic and selenium capture by fly ashes at low temperature.

Arsenic and selenium compounds may be emitted to the environment during coal conversion processes, although some compounds are retained in the fly ashes, in different proportions depending on the characteristics of the ashes and process conditions. The possibility of optimizing the conditions to achieve better trace element retention appears to be an attractive, economical option for reducing toxic emissions. This approach requires a good knowledge of fly ash characteristics and a thorough understanding of the capture mechanism involved in the retention. In this work the ability of two fly ash

Investigations of ash fouling with cattle wastes as reburn fuel in a small-scale boiler burner under transient conditions.

Fouling behavior under reburn conditions was investigated with cattle wastes (termed as feedlot biomass [FB]) and coal as reburn fuels under a transient condition and short-time operation. A small-scale (30 kW or 100,000 Btu/hr) boiler burner research facility was used for the reburn experiments. The fuels considered for these experiments were natural gas (NG) for the ashless case, pure coal, pure FB, and blends of coal and FB. Two parameters that were used to characterize the ash "fouling" were (1) the overall heat-transfer coefficient (OHTC) when burning NG and solid fuels as reburn fuels, a

Coupling effects of mineral components on arsenic transformation during coal combustion.

Exploring arsenic (As) transformation during coal combustion is beneficial for reducing its pollution. Herein, combustion experiments were developed at 1100-1300 °C in a fixed-bed experimental system with 25 types of coal samples. The occurrences of As in coal and combustion products were characterized. All the original forms of As in coal were found to be unstable during combustion. As retained in ash existed as water-soluble and ion-exchangeable and residual forms, but only as residual form at combustion temperature above 1200 °C. The distribution of As in gaseous and solid combustion produc

Mitigation of Total Volatile Organic Compounds from Earthen Stove Emissions Using Industrial Waste-Derived Nanofiber Sheets.

Recent progress in indoor air emission control technologies remains largely economically inaccessible to low-income populations, where even basic necessities such as food, clean water, and health care are often unaffordable. The high price and maintenance cost of these technologies make their adoption impractical. Apart from financial barriers, many of these air emission reduction technologies are time-consuming. These technologies require a significant amount of time to effectively reduce a high concentration of pollutants, delaying immediate health benefits. This delay is particularly proble

Inhalation health effects of fine particles from the co-combustion of coal and refuse derived fuel.

This paper is concerned with health effects from the inhalation of particulate matter (PM) emitted from the combustion of coal, and from the co-combustion of refuse derived fuel (RDF) and pulverized coal mixtures, under both normal and low NO(x) conditions. Specific issues focus on whether the addition of RDF to coal has an effect on PM toxicity, and whether the application of staged combustion (for low NO(x)) may also be a factor in this regard. Ash particles were sampled and collected from a pilot scale combustion unit and then re-suspended and diluted to concentrations of approximately 1000

Development of a high-efficiency ultrasound-assisted extraction method utilizing NH4HF2 and dilute HNO3 for the determination of critical elements (Li, Co, Ga, Ge, Ti, and V) and major elements (Fe, Al and Ca) in coal fly ash.

Coal fly ash (CFA), a by-product generated during coal combustion in thermal power plants, represents a valuable secondary source of critical elements (CEs) including lithium (Li), cobalt (Co), gallium (Ga), germanium (Ge), titanium (Ti), and vanadium (V). In this study, a highly efficient ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) procedure comprised three sequential steps for the quantitative recovery of the selected CEs from CFA. In the first step, the mineral phases present in the CFA samples were activated ultrasonically using a mixture of ammonium bifluoride (ABF, NH4HF2) and dilute HNO3. The

Chemistry of Trace Inorganic Elements in Coal Combustion Systems: A Century of Discovery.

Coal fueled the Industrial Revolution and the global expansion of electrification in the 20th century. In the 21st century, coal use has declined in North America and Europe, but continues to increase in Asia. Coal contains many of the elements of the Periodic Table, in percent-levels or in trace amounts (ppm, ppb). The impact of many of these elements on the environment via air and water discharges from coal-fired plants has been studied with decades of research on their chemical transformations within combustion systems and on their fates upon reintroduction into the environment. The transfo

Inorganic aerosols and their role in catalyzing sulfuric acid production in furnaces.

Submicrometer ash and sulfur oxides are important pollutants formed during pulverized coal combustion. The submicrometer ash contains known catalysts for sulfur dioxide oxidation as well as alkaline species that will react with sulfur oxides. This work was an investigation to determine if submicrometer ash-sulfur oxide interactions can have a significant impact on the fate of sulfur. The submicrometer-ash-sulfur oxide interaction studies were carried out using submicrometer ash of controlled composition generated from the combustion of synthetic chars. The submicrometer ash was either exposed

Determination and evaluation of hexavalent chromium in power plant coal combustion by-products and cost-effective environmental remediation solutions using acid mine drainage.

The chromium species leaching from a coal combustion fly ash landfill has been characterized as well as a novel approach to treat leachates rich in hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), by using another natural waste by-product, acid mine drainage (AMD), has been investigated during this study. It is observed that as much as 8% (approximately 10 microg g(-1) in fly ash) of total chromium is converted to the Cr(VI) species during oxidative combustion of coal and remains in the resulting ash as a stable species, however, it is significantly mobile in water based leaching. Approximately 1.23 +/- 0.01 micr

Hydrothermal treatment of typical combustion and incineration residues: State-of-the-art technologies and future perspectives.

Coal combustion and waste incineration processes generate massive solid residues, posing severe environmental risks and resource waste. Effective valorization of typical combustion and incineration residues, including coal fly ash (CFA), coal bottom ash (CBA), municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (IBA), and incineration fly ash (IFA), is crucial for achieving circular economy goals and environmental sustainability. As a mild and efficient thermochemical technology, hydrothermal (HT) treatment improves the reactivity of solid residues and enables synthesis of high-value functional prod

Geopolymers as a material suitable for immobilization of fly ash from municipal waste incineration plants.

This paper discusses the possibility of using the process of geopolymerization to immobilize ash from municipal waste incineration plants. Fly ash used in the related research came from the same incineration plant, one of the biggest in Poland. The examination was conducted on the waste samples labeled as 190107* and 190113*. The comparison included such properties of waste as chemical composition, dioxin content, and size and morphology of particles. The waste was solidified in geopolymer matrix made from (i) fly ash from the combustion of bituminous coal or (ii) metakaolin. The waste percent

Surfactant modified waste ash for the removal of chloro and nitro group substituted benzene from wastewater.

A surfactant-modified coal fly ash was developed as a multifunctional adsorbent for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used to modify the surface of coal fly ash (CFA). The modified CFA was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface porosity analyzer, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that loading CFA with SDS not only improved the functionality and surface morphology of the raw ash for the adsorption of organic pollutants, but also enhanced its thermal st

Influence of NO2 and SO2 on the specific resistance of dust in flue gas.

The influence of flue gas composition on the specific resistance of coal-fired fly ash is studied in this paper. We conclude that the negative electrons of NO2 and SO2 gases are strong. The probabilities of electron desorption on SO2 and NO2 negative ions are lower than that in air atmosphere at high temperature. Therefore, the introduction of SO2 causes NO2 to reduce the specific resistance value of coal-fired fly ash. When the pores on the surface of fly ash particles are filled with SO2, no change will occur in NO2, average pore size, pore volume, and specific surface area of fly ash partic

Development and coagulation mechanism of a high accumulation, highly stable alkali-activated solidified foam for preventing the spontaneous combustion of coal.

To reduce greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, etc.) released by spontaneous combustion of coal, and addressing the issues of poor stability and weak stacking capacity of traditional inorganic solidified foams, fly ash (FA) is utilized in a resource-efficient and high-value manner, and liquid sodium silicate (LSS) is introduced to develop alkali-activated high-stacking solidified foam (AHSF). First, we selected highly stable water-based foams under alkaline conditions. Second, we studied the influence of LSS modulus and alkali content on the macroscopic properties and microstructure of AHSF. Finally, w

Neighborhood-scale lead (Pb) speciation in Akron, Ohio (USA) soils: primary sources, post-deposition diagenesis, and high concentrations of labile Pb.

Lead (Pb) poses a significant risk to infants and children through exposure to contaminated soil and dust. However, there is a lack of information on Pb speciation and distribution at the neighborhood-scale. This work aimed to determine: (1) the distribution of acid-extractable (labile) Pb and other metals ([M]AE) in two neighborhoods in Akron, Ohio (USA) (Summit Lake and West Akron; n = 82 samples); and (2) Pb speciation and potential sources. Total metal concentration ([M]T) and [M]AE was strongly correlated for Pb and Zn (R2 of 0.66 and 0.55, respectively), corresponding to 35% and 33% acid

Boiler briquette coal versus raw coal: Part II--Energy, greenhouse gas, and air quality implications.

The objective of this paper is to conduct an integrated analysis of the energy, greenhouse gas, and air quality impacts of a new type of boiler briquette coal (BB-coal) in contrast to those of the raw coal from which the BB-coal was formulated (R-coal). The analysis is based on the source emissions data and other relevant data collected in the present study and employs approaches including the construction of carbon, energy, and sulfur balances. The results show that replacing R-coal with BB-coal as the fuel for boilers such as the one tested would have multiple benefits, including a 37% incre

Mitigation of gaseous mercury emissions from waste-to-energy facilities: Homogeneous and heterogeneous Hg-oxidation pathways in presence of fly ashes.

This study describes the main mechanisms that take part in the mercury homogeneous oxidation pathway in presence of some of the main reactive compounds formed during waste incineration processes (O2, HCl, SO2 and NO). Series of model, synthetic dry flue gases were used to elucidate the effects of HCl, SO2, NO and their proportions in the gas on mercury behaviour. Three samples of fly ash collected from a MSWI facility were characterized and evaluated both for Hg heterogeneous oxidation and Hg removal in a laboratory scale device. The results obtained in this study showed that homogeneous mercu
