Co-occurrence patterns of internal parasitic nematodes and coccidia in wild bighorn sheep depend on host geography and environment.

Heterogeneity of internal parasite communities amongst host animals is shaped by processes at multiple scales, including landscape distribution of parasites, individual host suitability, and parasite interactions within a host. As a result, pathogen co-occurrence patterns vary across space and time and among host populations. Often the challenges of wildlife sampling limit understanding of the drivers of pathogen community heterogeneity in host animals. In this study, we explore patterns and drivers of parasite community heterogeneity amongst wild bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) hosts over tim

Impact of a direct-fed microbial supplementation on intestinal permeability and immune response in broiler chickens during a coccidia challenge.

Maintaining intestinal health supports optimal gut function and influences overall performance of broilers. Microlife® Prime (MLP) contains a unique combination of four strains of Bacillus spp. selected to support a healthy gut which may improve performance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of MLP supplementation on intestinal health and immunity of broilers challenged with a mixed coccidia infection during peak [0 to 6-day post-infection (dpi)] and recovery phases (6 to 13 dpi). A total of 120 male, 4 days-old Ross 708, broiler chicks were allotted to 3 treatment groups (8 r

Molecular Characterization of Coccidia Associated with an Epizootic in Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) in South East Queensland, Australia.

In the spring of 2014, mass mortalities among wild green sea turtles occurred off the coast of south-east Queensland, Australia. The suspected causative agent was Caryospora cheloniae, an eimeriid coccidian implicated in previous epizootics. Necropsies were undertaken on a subset of 11 dead turtles, with subsequent histopathology and molecular analyses. All turtles returned positive PCR results for coccidial infection in various tissues; these included the brain, gastrointestinal tract, lung, kidney and thyroid. Granulomatous encephalitis was consistently observed, as well as enteritis and, le

Effects of reducing growth rate via diet dilution on bone mineralization, performance and carcass yield of coccidia-infected broilers.

Coccidiosis and rapid growth rate (GR) compromise bone mineralization in modern broilers. We tested the hypothesis that reducing GR via diet dilution during peak bone development will improve bone mineralization in both infected and uninfected broilers. A total of 384 male Ross 308 chicks were allocated to a basal grower diet (3,107 kcal/kg ME and 19.4% CP) diluted with 0, 5, 10, or 15% lignocellulose (n = 12 pens/treatment, 8 birds/pen) at day 10 of age. Prior to this, birds in each group received half the intended diet-dilution levels (day 8 to 10 of age) and a common starter diet (day 1 to

Triple infection with agamid adenovirus 1, Encephaliton cuniculi-like microsporidium and enteric coccidia in a bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps).

A 2-month-old juvenile central bearded dragon was presented for anorexia and cachexia. Another specimen from the same cage had died suddenly 2 weeks prior. Fecal analysis revealed a high quantity of Isospora amphiboluri and a few pinworm eggs. Other examinations were not performed and the animal died a few days later despite supportive care. A third individual from the same cage presented with anorexia and a distended cœlom and was euthanized. In this third dragon, histological examination revealed intestinal coccidiosis, basophilic intranuclear inclusions compatible with adenovirus infection,

Ultrastructure of Goussia cruciata (Apicomplexa: Coccidia) infecting the liver of horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus (L.), from Ibero-Atlantic waters.

The ultrastructure of developmental stages of Goussia cruciata and the pathology they cause in the liver of Trachurus trachurus (Teleostei: Carangidae) caught off the Galician (North-West Spain) and Portuguese North Atlantic coasts are described. Each oocyst contained four ellipsoidal sporocysts, with two sporozoites. The sporocyst wall consisted of a thick and dense inner layer with transverse striations and a multi-lamellated outer layer formed by parallel dense internal bands alternating with lighter areas. The lamellae formed filamentous extensions of the wall. The sporocyst wall striation

Prevalence and seasonal variation of gastrointestinal nematodes and coccidia infecting ovine grazing on communal rangelands in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Nematodes and coccidia are major pathogens causing parasitic infections in livestock production. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and seasonality of gastrointestinal helminths and coccidia in communal sheep grazing in humid, semi-humid and arid zones of the Eastern Cape Province. A total of 3299 faecal samples were collected from sheep between January 2012 and December 2015. Of the collected roundworm species (faecal eggs and faecal cultures), Haemonchus contortus was the only species found. The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was significantly higher in the humid zone (H.

Effect of in vitro and in vivo 25-hydroxyvitamin D treatment on macrophages, T cells, and layer chickens during a coccidia challenge.

This article describes the in vitro and in vivo effects of a 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25[OH]D) treatment in layer hens during a mixed coccidia challenge. HD11 cells (chicken macrophage cell line) were treated in vitro with a coccidia antigen or in a medium supplemented with either 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25[OH]2D) or 25(OH)D. HD11 cells treated in vitro with 200 nM of 1,25(OH)2D had increased nitrite production (P < 0.01) compared with HD11 cells treated with 0 or 200 nM of 25(OH)D. Treating HD11 cells with 25(OH)D decreased IL-10 mRNA by 1.7-fold, but 1,25(OH)2D treatment increased

Effect of dietary zinc level on serum carotenoid levels, body and shank pigmentation of chickens after experimental infection with coccidia.

Two experiments were conducted to test the effects of a dietary zinc amino acid complex (Zn-AA) and an anticoccidial drug on Eimeria acervulina or Eimeria tenella infections. In each experiment, 288 day-old Three-Yellow-Chickens were used in a 2 x 3 factorial experimental design. Six groups were arranged randomly to receive three levels of Zn-AA (0, 40, or 80 mg/kg) alone or with salinomycin (60 mg/kg). Additionally an uninfected group was set as negative control. At the age of 21 days birds in Exp. 1 were inoculated with 3 x 10(4) sporulated E. acervulina oocysts, while birds in Exp. 2 were i

Polyphyly and Deep Evolutionary History of Piscine Coccidia: Mitochondrial Genomics of a New Goussia Species From Pacific Saury (Cololabis saira).

The genus Goussia Labbé 1896 represents a polyphyletic assemblage of piscine coccidia whose systematics remain poorly resolved due to morphological convergence and limited genomic data. Here we describe Goussia sairae n. sp. from the liver of Pacific saury (Cololabis saira) in the Northwestern Pacific, characterized through integrated morphological, histopathological, and molecular analyses. Long-read amplicon sequencing of single-oocyst isolates enabled the first complete mitochondrial genome assembly for a marine Goussia species, revealing two co-existing mitogenome genotypes (99.3% identity

Comparison of Gut Microbiome Profile of Chickens Infected with Three Eimeria Species Reveals New Insights on Pathogenicity of Avian Coccidia.

Avian coccidiosis is an intestinal disease caused by Eimeria spp. infection. A deeper understanding of the interaction between host gut microbiota and the Eimeria parasite is crucial for developing alternative therapies to control avian coccidiosis. Here, we used full-length sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA amplicons to compare changes in the gut microbiota of chickens infected with Eimeria tenella, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria necatrix, aiming to identify both species-specific and common alterations in gut microbiota at 4 and 10 days post-infection. The result revealed that infection with all t

[Isolation and description of a new species of Eimeria in rabbits (Orychtolagus cuniculus) : Eimeria pellerdyi P. Coudert, 1977 (Sporozoa, Coccidia)].

Several pure isolates of Coccidia have been obtained in coccidia-free Rabbits by methods taking advantage of differences in the duration of their life-cycle and their site of development, as well as by the inoculation of experimentally immunized animals. Among these isolates one has been shown to represent a new species for which we propose the name: Eimeria pellerdyi P. Coudert, 1977. The oocysts of this species are of medium size (21 x 30 mu), without oocystic residual body. The endogenous life-cycle is completed in 10 days. Schizogony takes place in the superficial epithelial cells of the c

Coccidia of New World passerine birds (Aves: Passeriformes): a review of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 and Isospora Schneider, 1881 (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae).

In the New World, the avian order Passeriformes comprises 47 families and 2,453 species, yet to date only 21 (45%) of the families and 58 (2%) of the species have been examined for coccidia, and from these only two species of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 and 81 species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 have been described. This review contributes to our understanding of the morphology and systematics of coccidian parasites of passeriforms, providing a scientific basis for the identification of sporulated oöcysts recovered from the faeces of passerine birds from North, Central and South America. Newly Described Coccidia Goussia bayae from White Perch Morone americana: Morphology and Phylogenetics Support Emerging Taxonomy of Goussia within Piscine Hosts.

In March and April 2016, 150 white perch ( Morone americana) were collected from various localities in Chesapeake Bay and examined for coccidia. A previously undescribed species of coccidia was observed in the hepatic bile ducts and gallbladder of all white perch (100%) examined. We describe this species using morphological characteristics, histology, and gene sequences of the small-subunit ribosomal DNA ( rDNA), large-subunit rDNA, and mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase 1 ( COI), cytochrome oxidase b ( Cytb), and cytochrome oxidase 3 ( COIII). Dietary grape pomace ameliorates intestinal damage and oxidative stress by modulating MAPK-Nrf2/ARE pathways in coccidia-challenged broilers (Gallus gallus).

Grape pomace (GP) is an agricultural byproduct rich in bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties that have proven to have strong antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties in chickens. As a part of a defense mechanism, coccidiosis initiates oxidative bursts, generating large amounts of free radical species that negatively affect the gut health of chickens. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary inclusion of GP in broilers infected with coccidiosis on physiological and molecular markers of gut health, immune response, and oxidative status.
