Natural products are ecofriendly agents that can be used against parasitic diseases. Eimeria species cause eimeriosis in many birds and mammals and resistance to available medications used in the treatment of eimeriosis is emerging. We investigated the in vitro and in vivo activity of Morus nigra leaf extracts (MNLE) against sporulation of oocysts and infection of mice with Eimeria papillata. The feeding of monensin as a coccidiostat in three separate flocks of turkeys was associated with increased mortality, posterior paresis, and a skeletal muscle myopathy. Toltrazuril (TZR) is currently the only registered chemotherapeutic drug in the European Union for the treatment of Cystoisospora suis. This study investigated the comparative pharmacokinetics and tissue concentration-time profiles of TZR and its active metabolite, toltrazuril sulfone (TZR-SO2 ), after oral (per os, p.o.) and intramuscular (i.m.) administration to suckling piglets. Following a single administration of TZR orally at 50 mg/piglet or intramuscularly at 45 mg/piglet, higher concentrations of TZR and TZR-SO2 were observed in all three investigated tissues after p.o. administration.

The course of natural Eimeria infections in 6 successive broiler flocks at a commercial farm comprising 4 houses, where different anticoccidial drug programs were employed, was studied by counting the number of oocysts in the litter at weekly intervals. The course of infection in all flocks followed a bell shaped curve in which oocyst numbers, initially low, increased to a peak ranging from 36 × 10(3) to 74 × 10(3) oocysts/g (OPG) of litter around 3 to 4 wk of age. Acute Toxoplasma gondii infection causes different clinical courses in 10-20% of cases. In immunocompetent patients, toxoplasmosis most often presents as asymptomatic cervical lymphadenopathy. Clinical manifestations such as pneumonia, myocarditis, hepatitis, and encephalitis are rarely reported. We present the case of an immunocompetent patient with a serious and complicated clinical course of toxoplasmic hepatitis with a maculopapular rash. The diagnosis was confirmed by serology and identification of bradyzoites in liver biopsy samples.

Escherichia coli is a commensal intestinal bacterium of humans and animals and is frequently associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study investigated the phenotypic and genotypic AMR and virulence factors in E. coli isolated from 120 young healthy chickens never treated with antibiotics and coccidiostats.
