A Review of Current Treatment Options for Coccygodynia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Coccygodynia is pain within the coccyx area. The diagnosis is made clinically with symptoms of pain in the coccyx region and worsening pain in sitting position. The initial treatment is conservative therapy. For patients who do not respond to conservative therapies, there are further interventions available. This includes local injection of local anesthetics and steroids, neurolysis of sacral nerve roots, caudal epidural block, pulse radiofrequency (PRF), intra-rectal massage and manipulation, ganglion impar block, levator ani massage and stretching, coccyx manipulation, and

Use of coccygeal vertebra autograft and platelet-rich plasma for treating a distal radial nonunion fracture in a small-breed dog.

A 4.3-kg, 11-month-old, spayed female poodle was presented for treatment of a right radio-ulnar nonunion fracture. Clinical history included failed surgical correction of a radius fracture with internal fixation 1 mo before presentation. Radiographic examination revealed a 1.5-cm lytic lesion on the right distal radius. Surgery was planned with a coccyx autograft and platelet-rich plasma. A 2.8-cm-long bone defect was created, and the lytic lesion was removed. Caudectomy was performed; the 6th and 7th coccygeal bones were harvested, placed into the defect, and fixed to the radius with a lockin

Laparoscopic Approach to Presacral Recurrence of Sacrococcygeal Teratoma.

A 6-month-old girl was presented to our hospital due to a presacral mass found 5 months after surgery of sacrococcygeal teratoma. The original tumor was a 63 x 50 mm sized round cyst connecting to the coccyx, observed with computed tomography. The initial operation was performed with en bloc removal of the tumor along with the coccyx in the prone position. During a routine follow up, ultrasonography indicated a possible local recurrence, 5 months after the initial operation. The magnetic resonance imaging revealed a polycystic formation with a diameter of 20 x 11 x 17 mm in the presacral space

Intrapartum coccygeal fracture, a cause for postpartum coccydynia: a case report.

Coccydynia can result from a varying number of causes, parturition being one of them. Although strains and sprains of the ligaments attached to the coccyx have been thought to be the usual cause for coccydynia occurring after childbirth, an intrapartum coccygeal fracture dislocation can result in the same. A 28-year-old female presented to the orthopaedic department 4 weeks after the birth of her first child with the complaint of coccygeal pain. Examination revealed marked local tenderness over the coccyx but no crepitus was felt. Radiographs established the diagnosis of fracture and posterior

Anorectal malformation and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in the diagnosis of anorectal malformations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 24 months, 5 patients aged 13 days-22 months were assessed by means of 6 colosonographies (colostograms or contrast-enhanced ultrasound enemas) as a result of suspected rectourethral fistula (3 boys) or rectovestibular fistula (2 girls). An ultrasound device with a dedicated software for contrast visualization, a multifrequency probe, and second-generation ultrasound contrast were employed. The results were confirmed using contrast-enhanced radiology in 4 p

Seat belt use to save face: impact on drivers' body region and nature of injury in motor vehicle crashes.

BACKGROUND: Seat belt use is the single most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in motor vehicle crashes. However, some case reports described seat belt use as a double-edged sword because some injuries are related to seat belt use in motor vehicle crashes. To comprehensively understand the effects of seat belt use, we systemically investigated the association between seat belt use and injuries based on anatomic body region and type of injury in drivers involved in motor vehicle crashes. METHODS: The injury information was obtained by linking crash reports with hospital discharge

Concurrent lumbosacral and sacrococcygeal fusion: a rare aetiology of low back pain and coccygodynia?

Sacrum is a triangular bone placed in the base of the spine and formed by the synostosis of five sacral vertebrae (S1-S5). Its upper part is connected with the inferior surface of the body of L5 vertebra forming the lumbosacral joint, while its lower part is connected with the base of the coccyx forming the sacrococcygeal symphysis, an amphiarthrodial joint. The existence of four pairs of sacral fora-mina in both anterior and posterior surface of the sacrum is the most common anatomy. Nevertheless, supernumerary sacral foramina are possible to be created by the synostosis of lumbosacral joint

[Separation of pygopagous Siamese twins].

The successful separation of pygopagous twins is described. The sacrum formed a common canal since S 1 to coccyx with two medullary cords side to side and diastematomyelia with, at this level, two dural sacks. In each baby there was small atrophy in one lower limb. There were two opposite vulvovaginal ducts and two recto-perineal fistules.

Imaging Coccygeal Trauma and Coccydynia.

The coccygeal region has complex anatomy, much of which may contribute to or be the cause of coccyx region pain (coccydynia). This anatomy is well depicted at imaging, and management is often dictated by what structures are involved. Coccydynia is a common condition that is known to be difficult to evaluate and treat. However, imaging can aid in determining potential causes of pain to help guide management. Commonly, coccydynia (coccygodynia) occurs after trauma and appears with normal imaging features at static neutral radiography, but dynamic imaging with standing and seated lateral radiogra

Treatment principles for coccygodynia.

AIM: An evaluation of treatment methods and outcomes for coccygodynia cases that do not respond to conservative treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Local anesthetic and steroid injections were applied in 32 coccygodynia cases that did not respond to conservative treatment (average of 15 months). Coccyx excision was performed as surgical treatment in 25 cases that had pain relief after the injections but later re-presented with complaints. The patients' pain levels were assessed with VAS. Postacchini classification was used for patient classification based on plain radiography. RESULTS: 20 (62%)

Molecular basis of urostyle development in frogs: genes and gene regulation underlying an evolutionary novelty.

Evolutionary novelties entail the origin of morphologies that enable new functions. These features can arise through changes to gene function and regulation. One key novelty is the fused rod at the end of the vertebral column in anurans, the urostyle. This feature is composed of a coccyx and a hypochord, both of which ossify during metamorphosis. To elucidate the genetic basis of these features, we used laser capture microdissection of these tissues and did RNA-seq and ATAC-seq at three developmental stages in tadpoles of Xenopus tropicalis. RNA-seq reveals that the coccyx and hypochord have t

Externalization of a soft tissue chordoma. Case report.

BACKGROUND: Chordomas are rare, slow-growing tumors that originate in the primitive notochord. The most frequent location is the sacrococcygeal region. It is more frequent in males. Average age is 61 years old. The aim of this study is to report a case of externalization of a chordoma in the sacral region. CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a 62-year-old female whose disease began 4 years before admission, reporting discomfort in the sacral region. In the intergluteal area, the presence of a mass that increased in size during the previous year was noticed and palpated. On proctological exa
