OBJECTIVE: To evaluate speech perception after cochlear implantation in children with cochlear nerve absence or deficiency.
METHODS: A retrospective case review was performed to identify children who underwent cochlear implantation with cochlear nerve absence or deficiency. The cochlear nerve was evaluated by high-resolution three-dimensional T2-weighted fast spin echo MR in the oblique sagittal and axial planes. A deficient cochlear nerve was defined as a cochlear nerve that is smaller in diameter when compared with the adjacent facial nerve in the midportion of the internal auditory canal.

Most cases of otosclerosis show pathological changes only around the oval window. On the other hand, it is known that cavernous changes extending to the cochlea induce progressive sensorineural deafness. Three patients with severe bilateral deafness and severe cochlear otosclerosis as diagnosed by CT underwent cochlear implantation. The postoperative hearing abilities were satisfactory in two of the three patients at one year after the operation. However, one patient with advanced otosclerosis suffered from the complication of facial nerve stimulation two months later after the cochlear implan

This paper is a retrospective review of 5 patients with various degrees of cochlear ossification who were implanted with the CLARION Multi-Strategy Cochlear Implant. Preoperative computed tomography scans, intraoperative findings, surgical technique, and hearing outcomes are discussed in a case report format. Full implantation was achieved in all cases by a systematic approach that included drill-through of proximal obstruction (2 cases), scala vestibuli insertion (2 cases), and complete drill-out (1 case). The only complication was delayed wound healing in a patient with sickle cell disease,

Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss seriously affects the communication and cognitive ability of the patients. Cochlear implantation (CI) is currently the most effective treatment, while it may damage the remaining inner ear function due to its poor biocompatibility and the resultant fibrosis. Herein, a porous methacrylated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (MA-PDMS)-coated cochlear electrode is presented for CI and hearing protection. The porous MA-PDMS is filled with a hybrid hydrogel system made of dexamethasone sodium phosphate (Dex), Ti3C2Tx MXene (MXene), and methacrylate gelatin (GelMA).

Introduction The cochlear anatomy varies in each individual, and that has an impact on decisions regarding the insertion of electrodes. The measurement of the cochlear size is the routine examination required to choose the proper cochlear implant (CI) electrodes. Objective To acquire normative data on the size of the cochlea (length, width, height, scala timpani [ST] height, cochlear duct length [CDL]) of CI candidates in Medan, Indonesia. Methods This descriptive study was conducted based on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) temporal bone data and on HRCT temporal data manipulated

Cochlear implants (CI) bypass the external and middle ear and parts of the inner ear, by delivering electrical stimuli to the remaining neural fibres of the acoustic nerve in a meaningful way. Many features of current CI are similar. They are all multi-channel devices with intracochlear placement of the active electrodes and with transcutaneous information and energy transfer. Factors affecting the auditory performance of CI recipients are patient-linked factors and device factors. An overview is given of key design parameters, processing characteristics and specifications of following CI plat

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implants (CIs) have revolutionized the management of deafness. Combined with newborn screening, children are being identified earlier and rehabilitated with CIs, allowing them to be mainstreamed in the education system. The aviation community has begun to see a new generation of pilots who are now seeking careers in aviation with the use of CI.
METHODS: A literature review using the Ovid Medline database was conducted. A search for airmen within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airman Medical Certification System with a diagnostic code for CIs was reviewed up t

Cochlear implants (CIs) are associated with a range of infections. These infections present unique considerations because of their position relative to the respiratory tract and the central nervous system, as well as the propensity for biofilms to form on CIs. This article reviews infections related to CIs, including otitis media, mastoiditis, meningitis, and deep CI infection. High-quality evidence on the prevention and management of CI infections is lacking; however, best practices regarding prevention and management are provided.

Cochlear implant in children. In a newborn, sensitive auditory stimulations allow the progressive central auditory development. In a congenital severe or profound deaf child, a cochlear implantation can be considered if auditory thresholds are too low to provide an efficient auditory stimulation with hearing aids. This device includes an external processor, which receives and analyses surrounding sounds, and send them to the internal part surgically implanted. The electrode array placed in the cochlea stimulates auditory pathways. The implantation is performed in a multidisciplinary centre and

Insertion of a sound amplification device into the round window niche (extracochlear implant) or into the coils of the cochlea (intracochlear implant) can give significant benefits to some carefully selected, severely deaf patients. Imaging has an essential role in selective and pre-operative assessment. Severe otosclerosis and post-meningitic labyrinthitis ossificans are common causes of deafness in these patients and can be demonstrated by computed tomography (CT). The most suitable side for operation can be assessed. We describe our experiences with 165 patients, 69 of whom were found suita

Cochlear implant (CI) treatment is now established as a successful standard of care for auditory rehabilitation of profoundly deaf or severe hearing loss patients. CI candidates with tinnitus also benefit from improved health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and tinnitus burden. Current CI indications include bilateral (double-sided) profound hearing loss and deafness (DSD), unilateral (single-sided) deafness (SSD), and asymmetric hearing loss (AHL). The new and expanded indications for cochlear implants result in different healthcare situations, which may also be associated with differences in

The cochlear implant became a very successful method of hearing rehabilitation for patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss. The benefits of the CI extend beyond the medical success and positively influence social and psychosocial areas, reflected by an improved HRQoL. Furthermore, variety of studies demonstrated that the tinnitus severity improves in 46-95 % of cases following the cochlear implantation. However, the parameters investigated in such studies are not always standardized or addressed by validated questionnaires, which explains the high outcome variation between the studie

All patients in the Birmingham Cochlear Implant Programme underwent computerized tomography (CT) scanning and were assessed and images interpreted by the main author. Of the first 100 cases, 20 were considered to have abnormalities of the inner ears by CT imaging. It is concluded that the commonest abnormality was cochlear otospongiosis followed by labyrinthitis ossificans. Otospongiosis is well shown by CT which gives a good predicator of luminal patency. However, labyrinthus obliterans, although usually apparent on CT, is not reliably shown in all cases and T2 weighted magnetic resonance ima

The development of surgically implantable hearing aids that are placed directly in the cochlea where they send electrical impulses to the cochlear nerve is a major break-through for patients whose hearing loss is so severe as to make conventional electroacoustic hearing aids ineffectual. Initially used only in adults, this method has gradually been extended to pediatric patients. To benefit from a cochlear implant, the patient must fulfill a number of criteria which are specified in this article. Following preoperative investigations, the decision is taken during a meeting of all the care prov
