BACKGROUND: Medical social workers' (MedSWs) roles and responsibilities expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. They experienced larger caseloads, restrictive protocols, new policies, and work outside of their professional scope, despite limited access to resources, support, or hazard compensation. As a result, MedSWs faced complex ethical situations, which they had to address in accordance with the profession's guiding principles.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with 54 MedSWs about their professional experiences during the pandemic and used the National Associati

OBJECTIVE: Regulatory frameworks governing artificial intelligence (AI) in medical practice vary widely across European Union (EU) member states. We assessed the extent to which national medical bodies' codes of conduct address the clinical use of AI.
METHODS: Codes of conduct issued by national medical regulatory bodies in EU member states were analysed and rated for AI-specific content using a four-point scoring system.
RESULTS: Six countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Spain) had established AI-specific guidance within their medical ethical frameworks, with scores of

As shown in this article there is a continuous change of the ethical code in the research on humans, and there are correlations between research, ethics and society at any given time. The application of ethical principles during experiments on children are discussed by four selected examples of the past and the present: vaccination against smallpox, vaccination against hepatitis B, metabolic mass screening of newborns, and bone marrow transplantation for children. Means are proposed, how ethical problems can be considered in pediatric research without unnecessary administrative expenditure.

Medical professionalism faces distinctive challenges in the 21st century. In this chapter, we review the history of professionalism, address specific challenges physicians face today, and provide an overview of efforts to address these issues, including behavioral and virtue ethics approaches. First, we discuss core features professions share and the development of codes of medical ethics that guide the practice of western medicine. Second, we address challenges related to the doctor-patient relationship, continuity of care, cultural competence, conflicts of interest, and the regulation of qua

In Brazil, veterinary medicine is regulated by a resolution that sets out the Code of Ethics of the Veterinary Medical Profession, established by the Federal Council, which has national jurisdiction and compliance with which is monitored by the regional councils in each state. Some regional councils have reported an increase in the number of complaints of unethical proceedings in recent years, although this trend is not uniform across all Brazilian states. This increase has not yet been consistently documented. In this paper, a quantitative and qualitative description of cases of ethical infra

Declarations of the importance of dignity in health care are commonplace in codes of practice and other mission statements, yet these documents never clarify dignity's meaning. Their vague aspirations are compared to comments from staff and patients about opportunities for and barriers against the promotion of dignity in elderly care institutions. These suggest that while nurses and health care assistants have an intuitive understanding of dignity, they either do not or cannot always bring it about in practice. Thus, despite stated intentions to promote dignity, it appears that the circumstanc

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth (PTB) results from heterogeneous influences and is a major contributor to neonatal mortality and morbidity that continues to have adverse effects on infants beyond the neonatal period. This protocol describes the procedures to determine molecular signatures predictive of PTB through high-frequency sampling during pregnancy, at delivery and the postpartum period.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Four hundred first trimester pregnant women from either Myanmar or Thailand of either Karen or Burman ethnicity, with a viable, singleton pregnancy will be enrolled in this non-interve

BACKGROUND: The rapid development of large language models has accelerated the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in qualitative research. AI-assisted thematic analysis may improve coding efficiency and data organization, but concerns remain about its ability to interpret emotionally nuanced, contextually embedded, and culturally situated nursing narratives. Existing studies have emphasized coding performance and efficiency, whereas ethical and interpretive concerns in nursing qualitative research remain insufficiently examined.
OBJECTIVE: This secondary qualitative analysis compared human-l

Emotional safety in the therapy room is a clinical resource that belongs to the client. A growing number of clinicians, particularly those trained in social justice frameworks, feel empowered or obligated to correct clients' use of language deemed offensive. This paper argues that such practices are ethically indefensible and clinically counterproductive. Drawing on meta-analytic evidence on the therapeutic alliance, countertransference management, and core conditions of change, the evidence indicates that corrective responses to client language damage the alliance quality, increase the risk o

In 1989, in the wake of the first operations to transplant fetal tissue into the brains of sufferers from Parkinson's Disease, the UK Code of Practice governing the use of the fetus for research was overhauled by an eminent committee under the chairmanship of the Reverend Dr John Polkinghorne. The Polkinghorne Report has, however, attracted remarkably little comment or analysis. This paper is believed to be the first to subject it to sustained ethical and legal scrutiny. The author concludes that, although the committee's recommendations meet the major objections to the Code of Practice, the r

Recent scandals have pushed some states to tackle transparency and governance issues at healthcare not-for-profits, which the federal government has been reluctant to touch. Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Charles Fogarty, left, supports a bill in his state that would establish a code of ethics for hospital boards. Fogarty sees leaders as getting too comfortable in their jobs and working without accountability.

BACKGROUND: Caring for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with high levels of moral distress among healthcare professionals. The main moral conflict has been posited to be between applying coercion to prevent serious complications such as premature death and accepting treatment refusals. However, empirical evidence on this topic is scarce.
METHODS: We identified all 19 documentations of ethics consultations (ECs) in the context of AN from one clinical ethics support service in Switzerland. These documentations were coded with a sequential deductive-inductive approach and the co

As the field of global surgery develops, increased attention is being paid to its ethical considerations. However, there is a dearth of research on ethical challenges in global surgery that includes the voices of providers from Low- and Middle-Income Countries. This project seeks to understand the ethical concerns, considerations, and priorities in global surgery collaborations from the perspective of surgical care providers in Liberia. Using purposive/convenience sampling methods, we recruited eight surgical care providers (surgeons [n = 3], nurses [n = 3], and general practitioners [n = 2]).

The World Health Organization (WHO) in its Alma Ata Declaration, 1978, focuses on the development, promotion and recognition of the traditional medical systems. India has taken steps in this direction by recognising Unani medicine with other traditional medical systems practised in India. Presently, Government is promoting integration of the recognised traditional medical systems with conventional medicine at the national level, as an interdisciplinary approach to providing better patient-centred care. Bioethics is a field of enquiry that examines ethical issues and dilemmas emerging from medi

BACKGROUND: Medical ethics education is crucial for preparing medical students to face ethical situations that can arise in patient care. Instances of ethics being integrated into biomedical science education to build the connection between human science and ethics is limited. The specific aim of this study was to measure student attitudes towards an innovative curriculum design that integrates ethics education directly into a biomedical science course in pre-clinical medical curriculum.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, three ethics learning modules were designed and built in a biomedi

INTRODUCTION: Correctional nursing can involve significant ethical difficulties. This study examined ethical challenges encountered by correctional nurses in the Italian region of Liguria. Empirical data were analyzed in relation to relevant ethical standards. The former involved a study of 75 nurses and managers in the Ligurian correctional system, while the latter involved an analysis of the Italian Code of Ethics for Nurses and related standards for correctional practice.
METHODS: Quantitative and qualitative methods were used for the empirical study. Questionnaires were administered to co

Professional responsibilities, tradition, and personal conscience along with legal, philosophical, and religious convictions dictate nursing interventions. Inevitably, these factors embrace life-sustaining therapies; however, in view of complications, prognosis, pain and suffering, and their own views of quality of life, some patients express wishes inconsistent with life-sustaining measures. In other situations, the health care provider as well as the patient may view heroic efforts as more debilitating than resortative. Resolving the conflict while preserving the patient's best interests req
