Green and efficient ultrasound-assisted extraction of Banqiao Codonopsis Radix polysaccharides: Process optimization, extraction mechanism, and in vivo anti-ulcerative colitis efficacy with mechanistic insight.

Banqiao Codonopsis Radix polysaccharides (BCRPs) exhibit promising anti-inflammatory activity, but conventional hot water (HW) extraction is limited by low extraction efficiency, high energy consumption, and substantial carbon emissions. To address these limitations, response surface methodology was used to optimize the ultrasound-assisted (UA) extraction process. The optimal extraction parameters were as follows: extraction power 400 W, ethanol concentration 87%, extraction time 34 min, and liquid-to-solid ratio 29 mL/g. Under these conditions, UA extraction yielded 21.31 ± 1.01% of BCRPs (UB

Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide attenuates the inflammatory response in macrophages induced by Brucella abortus outer membrane protein 19 via regulating ATP2A1 to modulate cell adhesion and calcium signaling.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella species. Its pathogenesis is closely associated with bacterial evasion of macrophage-mediated killing, induction of a pro-inflammatory cytokine storm, and immune-mediated pathological damage. Accumulating evidence indicates that Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharides (CPPS) inhibit inflammatory signaling, enhance macrophage phagocytosis, and exert immunomodulatory effects across multiple organs. However, the therapeutic potential of CPPS in brucellosis remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the effects of CPPS on the inflam

Traditional Chinese medicine invigorating the spleen and kidney promotes HBsAg seroclearance in the mouse model.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is often used as an adjuvant or alternative therapy for abnormal liver biochemistry or liver fibrosis associated with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). However, the role of TCM in HBsAg seroclearance remains unclear. We aimed at exploring the role and possible mechanisms of TCM in HBsAg seroclearance. Fifteen widely used TCM granules invigorating the spleen and kidneys were screened. C57BL/6J mice were administered daily with TCM granules by gavage for 1 week. The effect of TCM on the M1 polarization of macrophages was measured using a CD86 assay. According to the p

Authentication of Shenqi Fuzheng Injection via UPLC-Coupled Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry and Chemometrics with Kendrick Mass Defect Filter Data Mining.

Nearly 5% of the Shenqi Fuzheng Injection's dry weight comes from the secondary metabolites of Radix codonopsis and Radix astragali. However, the chemical composition of these metabolites is still vague, which hinders the authentication of Shenqi Fuzheng Injection (SFI). Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with a charged aerosol detector was used to achieve the profiling of these secondary metabolites in SFI in a single chromatogram. The chemical information in the chromatographic profile was characterized by ion mobility and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Polygonal mass defect fi

Investigations on the protective action of Condonopsis pilosula (Dangshen) extract on experimentally-induced gastric ulcer in rats.

The action of Codonopsis pilosula extract in 5 animal models of gastric ulcer was investigated. It was found that the extract had higher efficacy on gastric ulcer induced by stress, acetic acid and sodium hydroxide and little significant effect on ulcers induced by pyloroligature and indomethacin. The C. pilosula extract was also capable of reducing gastric acid pepsin secretion. It is possible that inhibition of gastrointestinal movement and propulsion is one of the mechanisms underlying the antiulcer action of C. pilosula extract.
