Cognitive therapy for anxiety disorders.

In summary, we conclude that current evidence supports cognitive therapy as a promising approach to the treatment of anxiety. However, definitive conclusions regarding its efficacy must await large-scale, well-conducted, controlled trials that address the methodological shortcomings previously addressed. Furthermore, although there are many components to Beck's version of cognitive therapy, the critical ingredients are not known at this time. Despite the absence of data regarding this issue, we believe that future trials of cognitive therapy should include the following as core components: (a)

Atrial Fibrillation and Cognitive Disorders.

The prevalence of atrial fibrillation among older adults is increasing. Research has indicated that atrial fibrillation is linked to cognitive impairment disorders such as Alzheimer and vascular dementia, as well as Parkinson disease. Various mechanisms are believed to be shared between atrial fibrillation and cognitive impairment disorders. The specific pathologies and mechanisms of different cognitive disorders are still being studied. Potential mechanisms include cerebral hypoperfusion, ischemic or hemorrhagic infarction, and cerebrovascular reactivity to carbon dioxide. Additionally, circu

Cognition and functionality in delusional disorder.

BACKGROUND: Even if neurocognition is known to affect functional outcomes in schizophrenia, no previous study has explored the impact of cognition on functionality in delusional disorder (DD). We aimed to assess the effect of clinical characteristics, symptom dimensions and neuropsychological performance on psychosocial functioning and self-perceived functional impairment in DD. METHODS: Seventy-five patients with a SCID-I confirmed diagnosis of DD underwent neurocognitive testing using a neuropsychological battery examining verbal memory, attention, working memory and executive functions. We

Epigenetic drugs in cognitive disorders.

Cognitive disorders are an important group of disorders affecting the brain for which currently used drugs are often of low efficacy and mainly of symptomatic value. There is increasing evidence suggesting that epigenetic changes in gene expression underlie cognitive disorders. Advances in epigenetics have given rise to a new class of drugs, epigenetic drugs, that reverse epigenetic changes in gene expression. At present most work on epigenetic drugs focuses on two types of drugs: histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, and drugs targeting DNA methylation. This article describes the role of epi

[Cognitive function in eating disorders].

Eating disorders are characterized by uncontrolled eating behaviors. The core psychopathology is expressed in a variety of ways: body image distortion, preoccupation with food and weight, fear of weight gain, and so on. Brain-imaging techniques provide many opportunities to study neural circuits related symptoms in eating disorder. The present article focuses studies about functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of eating disorders. Studies of anorexia nervosa suggest 1) relationship between amygdala activation and fear of weight gain, 2) relationship between prefrontal cortex activity an

[Cognitive dysfunctions in bipolar disorders].

The aim of this article is to present the current state of knowledge in the field of cognitive dysfunctions in bipolar disorders (BD). These dysfunctions are considered to be a result of brain activation disorders and occur in such domains as attention, psychomotor speed, visuospatial abilities, different aspects of executive functions (e.g. cognitive flexibility, reaction inhibition), decision making, memory and learning, emotion processing. The picture of cognitive dysfunctions is different in states of mania and depression. Cognitive dysfunctions are present not only in different phases of

Epigenetic dysregulation in cognitive disorders.

Epigenetic mechanisms are not only essential for biological functions requiring stable molecular changes such as the establishment of cell identity and tissue formation, they also constitute dynamic intracellular processes for translating environmental stimuli into modifications in gene expression. Over the past decade it has become increasingly clear that both aspects of epigenetic mechanisms play a pivotal role in complex brain functions. Evidence from patients with neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Rett syndrome indicated that epigenetic mech

Cognitive impairment in neuromuscular disorders.

Several studies have suggested the presence of central nervous system involvement manifesting as cognitive impairment in diseases traditionally confined to the peripheral nervous system. The aim of this review is to highlight the character of clinical, genetic, neurofunctional, cognitive, and psychiatric deficits in neuromuscular disorders. A high correlation between cognitive features and cerebral protein expression or function is evident in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy (Steinert disease), and mitochondrial encephalomyopathies; direct correlation between tissue-specific pro

Cognitive disorders: A question of misattribution.

A recent study indicates that schizophrenia patients are prone to auditory hallucinations because they have difficulty recognising their 'inner speech' as their own, and consequently tend to misattribute it to an external source.

Cognitive deficits in developmental disorders.

The existence of specific developmental disorders such as dyslexia and autism raises interesting issues about the structure of the normally developing mind. In these disorders distinct cognitive deficits can explain a range of behavioural impairments and have the potential to be linked to specific brain abnormalities. One possibility is that there are specific mechanisms dedicated to particular types of information processing. These mechanisms may function independently of more general information processing systems and may have a distinct anatomical basis in the brain.

Cognitive processes in delusional disorders.

BACKGROUND: Studies of schizophrenics with persecutory delusions have shown cognitive biases in subjects who are deluded. It has been suggested that their delusions defend against depression. This study challenges the assumption that delusional disorder (DD) patients are covertly depressed. METHOD: Clinical and demographic data, and responses to questionnaires designed to assess schizotypy, depression, dysfunctional attitudes, attributional and attention biases were collected from 29 patients satisfying DSM-III-R criteria for DD. These were compared with 20 matched normal controls and results

Cognitive treatments for eating disorders.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is applicable to all eating disorders but has been most intensively studied in the treatment of bulimia nervosa (BN). CBT is designed to alter abnormal attitudes about body shape and weight, replace dysfunctional dieting with normal eating habits, and develop coping skills for resisting binge eating and purging. CBT is effective in reducing all core features of BN and shows good maintenance of therapeutic improvement. Although superior to therapy with antidepressant drugs, CBT has not been shown to be consistently superior to alternative psychological treatme

Cortisol and cognition in psychotic disorders: A systematic review and multi-level meta-analysis.

Emerging evidence suggests that dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, particularly cortisol, may contribute to the cognitive deficits commonly observed in psychotic disorders. We conducted the first combined systematic review and quantitative synthesis of associations between cortisol and cognition in psychosis. Twelve studies met inclusion criteria (940 participants; 74.68% cases; 39.57% female; mean age = 31.83 years). Of these, nine studies (822 participants; 71.04% cases; 35.96% female; mean age = 32.72 years) contributed data to three-level meta-analyses examinin

Linking spontaneous speech, cognition, and psychopathology across affective and psychotic disorders: A network approach.

BACKGROUND: Language impairments are common in affective and psychotic disorders, yet their patterns and underlying pathomechanisms remain insufficiently understood. A transdiagnostic perspective provides a framework for identifying shared and disorder-specific language alterations across diagnostic boundaries. Combining natural language processing (NLP) with network analysis enables the investigation of complex associations between linguistic, cognitive, and psychopathological features. METHODS: Spontaneous speech from N = 372 participants (119 MDD, 27 BD, 48 SSD and 178 HC) was elicited usi

Social cognition in women with eating disorders: Differences between the restrictive and purgative profiles.

INTRODUCTION: Difficulties in interpersonal interactions have been related to Social Cognition (SC) impairments in eating disorders (EDs). However, results do not account for differences between restrictive (rED) and purgative (pED) profiles and are just based on decoding tasks. This study assessed SC by Theory of Mind (ToM) abilities in ToM decoding and inference tasks between rED and pED patients and healthy women and its relationship with clinical variables. METHOD: 37 rED patients, 42 pED patients and 34 controls were evaluated using the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC)

Task-based functional neural correlates of social cognition across autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) both feature atypical social cognition. Despite evidence for comparable group-level performance in lower-level emotion processing and higher-level mentalizing, limited research has examined the neural basis of social cognition across these conditions. Our goal was to compare the neural correlates of social cognition in autism, SSDs, and typically developing controls (TDCs). METHODS: Data came from two harmonized studies in individuals diagnosed with autism or SSDs and TDCs (aged 16-35 years), including behavioral social cognitive

Plasma Soluble ST2 Levels Are Higher in Neurodegenerative Disorders and Associated with Poorer Cognition.

BACKGROUND: Suppressor of tumorgenicity 2 (ST2) is highly expressed in brain tissue and is a receptor for interleukin 33 (IL-33). ST2 exists in two forms, a transmembrane receptor (ST2L) and a soluble decoy receptor (sST2). IL-33 binds to ST2L, triggering downstream signaling pathways involved in amyloid plaque clearance. Conversely, sST2 binds competitively to IL-33, attenuating its neuroprotective effects. High sST2 levels have been reported in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggesting that the IL-33/ST2 signaling pathway may be implicated in neurodegenerative

SLITRK2 variants associated with neurodevelopmental disorders impair excitatory synaptic function and cognition in mice.

SLITRK2 is a single-pass transmembrane protein expressed at postsynaptic neurons that regulates neurite outgrowth and excitatory synapse maintenance. In the present study, we report on rare variants (one nonsense and six missense variants) in SLITRK2 on the X chromosome identified by exome sequencing in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. Functional studies showed that some variants displayed impaired membrane transport and impaired excitatory synapse-promoting effects. Strikingly, these variations abolished the ability of SLITRK2 wild-type to reduce the levels of the receptor tyros

Regulation of Neurotransmitters by the Gut Microbiota and Effects on Cognition in Neurological Disorders.

Emerging evidence indicates that gut microbiota is important in the regulation of brain activity and cognitive functions. Microbes mediate communication among the metabolic, peripheral immune, and central nervous systems via the microbiota-gut-brain axis. However, it is not well understood how the gut microbiome and neurons in the brain mutually interact or how these interactions affect normal brain functioning and cognition. We summarize the mechanisms whereby the gut microbiota regulate the production, transportation, and functioning of neurotransmitters. We also discuss how microbiome dysbi
