En Route to Depression: Self-Esteem Discrepancies and Habitual Rumination.

Dual-process models of cognitive vulnerability to depression suggest that some individuals possess discrepant implicit and explicit self-views, such as high explicit and low implicit self-esteem (fragile self-esteem) or low explicit and high implicit self-esteem (damaged self-esteem). This study investigated whether individuals with discrepant self-esteem may employ depressive rumination in an effort to reduce discrepancy-related dissonance, and whether the relationship between self-esteem discrepancy and future depressive symptoms varies as a function of rumination tendencies. Hierarchical re

Adoption in the age of reproductive technology.

The choice of adoption over genetic parenthood was investigated in 105 women retrospectively by questionnaire. Participants were divided into four groups: female/male subfertility; female subfertility; male subfertility; and female/male fertility. Half the sample (59/105) answered the question about the importance of a genetic link. Women who failed to adopt thought a genetic link was important, as did those who were less likely to disclose alternative reproductive conceptions to their child. First thoughts following diagnosis were more focused and actions more centered on adoption in the fema

Are cochlear implant patients suffering from perceptual dissonance?

Cochlear implants provide functional hearing to the majority of recipients and have gained widespread acceptance clinically, but the range of performance remains great and largely unexplained. Designs for implanted electrodes and electronics have converged, whereas novel speech processing strategies have proliferated. For each patient, the fitting audiologist must sort empirically through options that produce large but idiosyncratic differences in both objective performance and subjective preference. This review and analysis suggests that the place-pitch and rate-pitch theories on which cochle

The paranoid optimist: an integrative evolutionary model of cognitive biases.

Human cognition is often biased, from judgments of the time of impact of approaching objects all the way through to estimations of social outcomes in the future. We propose these effects and a host of others may all be understood from an evolutionary psychological perspective. In this article, we elaborate error management theory (EMT; Haselton & Buss, 2000). EMT predicts that if judgments are made under uncertainty, and the costs of false positive and false negative errors have been asymmetric over evolutionary history, selection should have favored a bias toward making the least costly error

Dissonance and healthy weight eating disorder prevention programs: long-term effects from a randomized efficacy trial.

Adolescent girls with body dissatisfaction (N = 481, SD = 1.4) were randomized to a dissonance-based thin-ideal internalization reduction program, healthy weight control program, expressive writing control condition, or assessment-only control condition. Dissonance participants showed significantly greater decreases in thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, negative affect, eating disorder symptoms, and psychosocial impairment and lower risk for eating pathology onset through 2- to 3-year follow-up than did assessment-only controls. Dissonance participants showed greater decreases i

A cross-lagged panel model of the bidirectional relationships between gaming-specific maladaptive cognitions and internet gaming disorder among adolescents in China.

The directions of the causal relationships between gaming-specific maladaptive cognitions (MCIG) and internet gaming disorder (IGD) are implicative but unclear, with few longitudinal studies in this regard. Bidirectional relationships are plausible, as suggested by the Cognitive Behavioral Model of Pathological Internet Use and Cognitive Dissonance Theory. This 12-month two-wave longitudinal study was conducted among 1857 junior middle school students in two Chinese cities to investigate the reciprocal relationships between three domains of MCIG (perceived overevaluation of rewards, perceived

The effort hypothesis at the heart of the virtuous circle.

This article updates the "virtuous circle" model, which links physical exercise with cognition. This model, which originally focused on connectivity between the salience network (SN) and central executive network (CEN), now also incorporates the default mode network (DMN). It describes a bidirectional dynamic: exercise enhances executive functions (i.e., inhibition, flexibility, updating, planning, and problem-solving), which in turn strengthen long-term exercise adherence. This virtuous circle leads to cognitive, physiological, and motivational benefits through synergistic mechanisms induced

The appraisal-distress relationship of auditory hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia: The moderating role of metacognitive beliefs.

BACKGROUND: Appraisal of hallucinatory voices plays a significant role in anxiety and depression among patients with auditory hallucinations. Metacognitive beliefs are also associated with psychological distress in schizophrenia patients. However, there is a dearth of literature exploring the role of metacognitive beliefs on the appraisal-distress relationship, specifically, the overemphasis laid on the need to maintain consistency among thoughts and avoid cognitive dissonance. AIM: The aim of the study is to study the role of metacognitive beliefs on the appraisal-distress relationship. MAT

Trauma and Identity Development in Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit.

The paper examines Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit through the framework of Trauma theory, highlighting the emotional and psychological consequences of hiding one's Dalit identity in a rigidly hierarchical society. This study offers a thorough analysis of the psychological pain caused by caste-based discrimination and the lasting impacts of social marginalisation. It underscores how caste discrimination engenders internalised fear, humiliation, and identity disintegration, resulting in persistent psychological distress. This paper examines how Dutt's young teenager experiences of concealing

More Motivated to Help Male Leaders? Explaining Fatherhood Bonuses via Follower Helping.

UNLABELLED: Family amplifies gender biases in organizations, presenting an ethical dilemma for modern organizations. Specifically, women tend to face additional barriers to leadership when they become mothers, while men often experience the opposite. But what about leaders' family explains these fatherhood bonuses? Focusing on work-family conflict (WFC), we theorize that this ostensibly negative state paradoxically motivates followers because it signals an opportunity to expend extra effort to help their leaders. We further theorize this helping process is stronger for male (vs. female) leader

Understanding Diagnostic Failure in Temporomandibular Disorders: A Narrative Synthesis of Evidence and Five-Domain Framework for Iatrogenic Mismanagement.

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic errors in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) contribute to unnecessary procedures and avoidable patient mismanagement despite advances in pain science, diagnostic classification systems, and evidence-based care. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a narrative review and present a dynamic, five-domain framework explaining how diagnostic uncertainty interacts with educational, cognitive, systemic, and ethical factors to produce iatrogenic overtreatment. METHODS: Searches of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (inception to April 2026) identified literature on TMD diagno

Intragroup xenophobic attitudes, ethnic identity, and substance use among Latinx adolescents.

This study examined intragroup xenophobic attitudes, ethnic identity, and substance use (N = 905). Drawing on cognitive dissonance theory, we hypothesized that intragroup xenophobic attitudes among Latinx individuals would be associated with higher levels of substance use (SU) in early adulthood and that ethnic identity would increase the strength of that association. We found that in 10th grade, xenophobic attitudes were higher among respondents with lower ethnic identity, a longer family history in the United States, and less stress. In a longitudinal analysis, SU in emerging adulthood was h

Self-management perceptions and needs in patients with thoracic surgical wound dehiscence: a descriptive phenomenological qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative wound dehiscence is a severe complication in thoracic surgery, yet patients' self-management experiences remain largely underexplored. This study aims to explore the current cognitive status and potential needs of patients with dehiscence after thoracic surgery regarding self-management in the Chinese context, and to provide a theoretical basis for formulating personalized and precise wound self-management support plans. METHODS: This study adopts a descriptive phenomenological qualitative research design. By using the purposive sampling method, patients with postope

Smoking-related psychosocial beliefs and justifications among smokers in India: Findings from Tobacco Control Policy (TCP) India Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Previous research in high-income countries (HICs) has shown that smokers reduce their cognitive dissonance through two types of justifications over time: risk minimizing and functional beliefs. To date, however, the relationship between these justifications and smoking behaviors over time has limited evidence from low- and middle-income countries. This study examines these of justifications and their relation to quitting behavior and intentions among smoking tobacco users in India. METHODS: The data are from the Tobacco Control Policy (TCP) India Survey, a prospective cohort of na

Neural mechanisms of cognitive conflict: processing COVID-19 vaccine misinformation.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid spread of misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic has raised important questions about how individuals evaluate false information, particularly when it conflicts with strongly held prior attitudes. Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying the processing of vaccine-related misinformation may clarify why such beliefs persist despite corrective information. METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined neural responses to COVID-19 vaccine misinformation and factual information in vaccine-receptive participants (N = 29). During scanning

[Prevention of eating disorders from the different psychological perspectives].

Objective: to systematically review and quantify the effectiveness of preventive interventions for eating disorders (TCA). Method: numerous electronic databases have been used with different keywords to compile randomized controlled studies carried out from 2009 to 2019 in relation to the prevention of eating disorders. Results: one hundred and thirteen articles were included, 21 for universal prevention, 84 for selective, and 8 for indicated. Small or moderate effect sizes were found in reducing risk factors for eating disorders that occur up to three years after the intervention. For univers

Gambling-related cognitive distortions mediate the relationship between depression and disordered gambling severity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Symptoms of depression are highly prevalent among individuals with gambling disorder, and severity of depression is associated with severity of gambling problem. Yet, little is known about the psychological mechanisms by which symptoms of depression lead to greater gambling severity. In this study, we tested whether cognitive distortions represent one such mechanism, as cognitive distortions are key characteristics in both depression and gambling disorder and have been shown to be associated with gambling severity. METHODS: A mediation model was tested among 345 tre

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy in a Patient With Situs Inversus: A Case Report.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery worldwide and is an effective treatment for obesity. Situs inversus (SI) is an uncommon congenital abnormality characterised by the anatomical location of organs within the body; it presents a rare technical challenge for bariatric surgeons due to the cognitive dissonance associated with operating on patients with mirror-image anatomy. Though even rarer, some of these patients may present with features of heterotaxy, which is defined by the abnormal arrangement of organs that comprises variants such as polys

How Does Problem Gambling Impact the Relationship Between Gambling Attitudes and Frequency?

Individuals' beliefs and perceptions about gambling are known to influence gambling behaviours. However, the associations between gambling attitudes, gambling frequency, and problem gambling are unclear within the existing literature. The study aimed to elucidate the relationship between gambling attitudes, gambling behaviour, and problem gambling, using responses to the 2018 Northern Territory Gambling Prevalence and Wellbeing Survey. Data from 1629 participants (Mage = 49.87 years; SD = 14.58 years; 51.63% female) who completed the Attitudes Towards Gambling Survey (ATGS), Problem Gambling S
