Risky decision making and cognitive flexibility among online sports bettors in Nigeria.

Online sports betting is a popular recreational activity in Nigeria. Like other forms of gambling, risk of pathological progression exists for gamblers who continue betting despite severe financial and psychosocial consequences. In the present study, we examined whether this population of gamblers shows deficits in decision making and cognitive flexibility that have been documented in Western gambling populations. Thirty-six online sports bettors and 42 non-gambling participants completed a version of the Iowa gambling task (IGT) and an established set-shifting task for the assessment of cogni

Stroke Induces a BDNF-Dependent Improvement in Cognitive Flexibility in Aged Mice.

Stroke remains a leading cause of disability worldwide. Recently, we have established an animal model of stroke that results in delayed impairment in spatial memory, allowing us to better investigate cognitive deficits. Young and aged brains show different recovery profiles after stroke; therefore, we assessed aged-related differences in poststroke cognition. As neurotrophic support diminishes with age, we also investigated the involvement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in these differences. Young (3-6 months old) and aged (16-21 months old) mice were trained in operant touchscree

When repetitive mental sets increase cognitive flexibility in adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: A major facet of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is cognitive inflexibility. However, sometimes, cognitive flexibility can be needed to reuse recently abandoned mental sets. Therefore, cognitive flexibility can in certain cases be useful to reinstate some form of rigid, repetitive behavior characterizing OCD. We test the counterintuitive hypothesis that under such circumstances, cognitive flexibility is better in OCD patients than controls. METHODS: We examined N = 20 adolescent OCD patients and N = 22 controls in a backward inhibition (BI) paradigm. This was combined with eve

Age-differences in cognitive flexibility when overcoming a preexisting bias through feedback.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults are often worse than younger adults at adapting to changing situational demands, and this difference is commonly attributed to an age-related decline in acquiring and updating information. Previous research on aging and cognitive flexibility has used measures that require adapting to novel associations learned during a laboratory task (e.g., choice X led to positive outcomes but now leads to negative outcomes). However, in everyday life people must frequently overcome associations based on preexisting beliefs and biases (e.g., you like to eat cake, but your doctor sa

Cognitive Flexibility and Social Responsiveness in Children and Adolescents with Tourette Syndrome.

This study examined cognitive flexibility and social responsiveness in children and adolescents with Tourette Syndrome (TS). Thirty one subjects with TS were compared to 32 age-matched healthy controls. Assessments included semi-structured interviews to assess psychopathology, parent-rated Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and a brief neuropsychological battery selected as measures of cognitive flexibility. Completion time for both Trail Making Tests (TMT-A and TMT-B) were significantly longer for TS group than controls, however the difference in perseverative errors on Wisconsin Card Sorting

The effects of dysphoria and rumination on cognitive flexibility and task selection.

Executive dysfunction in dysphoria and dysphoric rumination is often reflected as a difficulty to alter behaviour in response to task demands and is associated with performance deficits on measures of cognitive flexibility. In the present study, participants were required to switch between two randomly ordered spatial location tasks in which the position of a target within a 2×2 grid was determined according to a horizontal or vertical dimension. The typical congruency effect in task switching was replicated such that interference from a currently irrelevant task was associated with slower and

Cognitive flexibility in juvenile anorexia nervosa patients before and after weight recovery.

Deficits in set-shifting abilities have been robustly described in adult patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). These deficits are associated with behavioral traits, such as rigidity and perfectionism, and are independent of starvation. However, little is known about neurocognitive deficits in juvenile patients with AN. The brain circuits that support set shifting are not fully mature in these patients. One possibility is that neuroendocrinological changes, such as elevated cortisol levels, contributing to alterations in cognitive performance in individuals with AN. Set-shifting abilities (Visua

Neural correlates of cognitive flexibility in children at risk for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Youth with bipolar disorder (BD) show behavioral and neural deficits in cognitive flexibility; however, whether such deficits exist among youths at risk for BD has not been explored. METHODS: The current fMRI study examined the neural basis of cognitive flexibility in BD youth (n = 28), unaffected youth at risk for BD (AR; n = 13), and healthy volunteer youth (HV; n = 21) by comparing brain activation patterns while participants performed the change task. On change trials, subjects must inhibit a prepotent response and execute an alternate one. RESULTS: During successful change t

Exercise, Perceived Exercise-Related Cognitive Benefits, and Cognitive Flexibility: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Chinese University Students.

This cross-sectional study examined the associations between exercise frequency, duration, consistency, and cognitive flexibility among students at one Chinese university. Guided by a psychological perspective, the study evaluated the parallel mediating roles of Perceived Exercise-Related Cognitive Benefits (PECB), a self-reported psychological construct reflecting perceived cognitive benefits associated with exercise, and psychological well-being, together with the moderating role of exercise intensity. A total of 398 university students were recruited through purposive sampling and completed

Working memory and cognitive flexibility predict growth trajectories of sluggish cognitive tempo in youth with spina bifida.

As sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) shows similar inattention and neuropsychological dysfunction as youth with spina bifida (SB), it is important to examine whether neuropsychological functioning may affect the development of SCT in this population. Participants were 140 youth with SB and their parents who participated in five waves of a longitudinal study across eight years (ages 8-15 years at Time 1). At Time 1, teacher-, mother-, and father-report of SCT showed 9%, 8.3%, and 5.3% impairment in SCT respectively compared to other youth in the sample. Growth curves were used to examine changes o

Inhibition/excitation balance is associated with functional connectivity during cognitive flexibility performance.

The primary excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, glutamate and GABA, regulate neural communication. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated whether the large-scale functional connectivity of two important brain hubs, the inferior frontal cortex and the inferior parietal lobe, is associated with changes in the GABA/Glx (glutamate + glutamine) balance in the in vivo human brain during a cognitive flexibility task. Furthermore, we explored age differences in this relationship, given the alterations in neurotransmitter levels and in cognitive flexibility performance in older adults.

Frontoparietal Hubs Leverage Probabilistic Representations and Integrated Uncertainty to Guide Cognitive Flexibility.

Adaptive behavior requires integrating information from multiple sources. These sources can originate from distinct channels, such as internally maintained latent cognitive representations or externally presented sensory cues. Because these signals are often stochastic and carry inherent uncertainty, integration is challenging. However, the neural and computational mechanisms that support the integration of such stochastic information remain unknown. We introduce a computational neuroimaging framework to elucidate how brain systems integrate internally maintained and externally cued stochastic

Measuring psychological flexibility and cognitive defusion in individuals with acquired brain injury.

PURPOSE: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is used increasingly for individuals with psychological distress following acquired brain injury (ABI) in different countries. However, questionnaires measuring ACT-processes are often not validated for this patient group and need cross-cultural validation. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire for Acquired Brain Injury (AAQ-ABI; measuring psychological flexibility related to thoughts and feelings about ABI) and the Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ-7; measuring cognitive defusion). Maternal immune activation impairs cognitive flexibility and alters transcription in frontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest that the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia is increased by prenatal exposure to viral or bacterial infection during pregnancy. It is still unclear how activation of the maternal immune response interacts with underlying genetic factors to influence observed ASD phenotypes. METHODS: The current study investigated how maternal immune activation (MIA) in mice impacts gene expression in the frontal cortex in adulthood, and how these molecular changes relate to deficits in cognitive flexibility

Fronto-Parietal Subnetworks Flexibility Compensates For Cognitive Decline Due To Mental Fatigue.

Fronto-parietal subnetworks were revealed to compensate for cognitive decline due to mental fatigue by community structure analysis. Here, we investigate changes in topology of subnetworks of resting-state fMRI networks due to mental fatigue induced by prolonged performance of a cognitively demanding task, and their associations with cognitive decline. As it is well established that brain networks have modular organization, community structure analyses can provide valuable information about mesoscale network organization and serve as a bridge between standard fMRI approaches and brain connecto

Cognitive flexibility and its electrophysiological correlates in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Motor symptoms in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) have been related to changes in frontostriatal brain networks. These changes may also give rise to alterations in cognitive flexibility. However, conclusive evidence for altered cognitive flexibility in patients with GTS is still lacking. Here, we meta-analyzed data from 20 neuropsychological studies that investigated cognitive flexibility in GTS using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Results revealed medium-sized GTS-related performance deficits, which were significantly modulated by age: Whilst being substantial in children and ad

Decentering, rumination, cognitive defusion, and psychological flexibility in people with chronic pain.

The psychological flexibility model appears to be useful for organizing research into chronic pain. One component of the model is called "cognitive defusion." A process referred to as decentering, measured by the Experiences Questionnaire (EQ), appears similar to cognitive defusion. The purpose of this study is to extend previous investigations of the EQ, to evaluate its factor structure, and examine both indirect and direct roles for decentering in relation to key clinical outcomes. 352 people seeking pain treatment participated in this study. All completed the EQ and standard measures of dai

Cognitive flexibility and Agouti-related protein in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive flexibility and the flexible learning and relearning of stimulus-reward-associations are important for decision-making and goal-directed behavior. Studies on patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) have shown difficulties in cognitive functions associated with malnutrition and extreme underweight. However, to date we find a lack of neuropsychological studies on cognitive flexibility among adolescent patients with AN. Furthermore, the underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, we aim to examine cognitive functions, especially reward association learning, as
