Heterogeneity in fibromyalgia based upon cognitive and physical performance and psychological symptomology.

PURPOSE: This study sought to investigate the existence of subgroups within a fibromyalgia (FM) sample based on physical and cognitive performance measures, as well as self-report psychological measures. A multisystem disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and co-morbid conditions, FM can lead to declines in cognitive functioning and difficulty with psychological health. DATA SOURCES: Community participants (n = 57 women) recruited from support groups and university center databases provided documentation of having met the criteria for diagnosis of FM. Measures included val

Decentering, rumination, cognitive defusion, and psychological flexibility in people with chronic pain.

The psychological flexibility model appears to be useful for organizing research into chronic pain. One component of the model is called "cognitive defusion." A process referred to as decentering, measured by the Experiences Questionnaire (EQ), appears similar to cognitive defusion. The purpose of this study is to extend previous investigations of the EQ, to evaluate its factor structure, and examine both indirect and direct roles for decentering in relation to key clinical outcomes. 352 people seeking pain treatment participated in this study. All completed the EQ and standard measures of dai

The psychological impact of peer victimization: exploring social-cognitive mediators of depression.

Although the association between peer victimization and depression is well established (Hawker & Boulton, 2000; Nansel et al., 2001), little research has examined the processes whereby victimization may lead to depression. This study examined the social-cognitive processes that mediate the relationship between peer victimization and depression. A questionnaire measuring peer victimization, depression, depression rumination, self efficacy to enlist support, and collective school efficacy to stop peer aggression at two time points during one school year was completed by 1167 secondary school chi

Relationship between behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia and cognition in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSDs) are common. It is unclear whether associations are stronger with the absolute cognitive level or that relative to premorbid mental ability. METHODS: The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) was administered to carers of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Patients underwent cognitive testing with the National Adult Reading Test (NART) to estimate premorbid IQ and 6 tests of current cognitive function. RESULTS: 556 patients, mean age 77.3 years, had NPI scores. The total NPI score correlated significantly with most cogniti

A social psychological study of ethnonyms: cognitive representation of the in-group and intergroup hostility.

Ethnonyms (M. G. Levin & L. P. Potapov, 1964; from the Greek roots meaning "a national group" and "name") are the names an in-group uses to distinguish itself from out-groups. There has been no social psychological research to date exploring the effects of ethnonyms. The authors report the results of 3 studies examining the potential effects of various features of ethnonyms on intergroup behavior. Analyses of archival data indicate that among indigenous African cultures (Study 1), indigenous Native American cultures (Study 2), and African Americans (Study 3), intergroup hostility was greater a

Fatigue, cognitive functioning and psychological distress in Marfan syndrome, a pilot study.

Marfan patients report fatigue as a major subjective complaint. We found no studies exploring the subject. The aim of this study was in a strictly defined Marfan population to assess self-reported fatigue, cognitive functions and psychological distress, correlations among them and correlations to visual acuity, joint hypermobility and use of beta-blockers. Sixteen subjects aged 18 - 30 years, fulfilling the Gent criteria, were assessed with the Fatigue Severity Scale, Fatigue Questionnaire, a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Biological and psychological processes in recovery from depression during cognitive therapy.

This study investigated the relationship between biological and psychological processes in the recovery phase of depression during treatment with cognitive therapy. In particular, we tested the hypothesis that biological and psychological processes are independent; the hypothesis that they are related in a linear or sequential process; and the hypothesis that there is a circular relationship between them. 35 depressed patients completed a 12 week program of cognitive therapy. Changes in measures of negative thinking and amine dysfunction over the course of therapy were compared for those who i

The Influence of Social and Psychological Factors on Cognition Among Liver Transplant Recipients.

IntroductionCognitive impairment in liver transplant recipients can lead to poor health outcomes, and identifying at-risk individuals is important to provide timely support. Poor social conditions, including poor socioeconomic status and lack of social support, have been suggested as potential contributors to cognitive impairment. Further, individuals with poor social conditions may experience psychological symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, which can further affect cognition.AimThis preliminary study explored longitudinal associations between social conditions, depression and anxiety s

Perceived cognitive loss, symptomology, and psychological well-being with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adults with bipolar disorder (BD) commonly present with cognitive deficits. Many also report subjective or perceived cognitive failures. For this study, we identified four distinct clusters of adults with BD on the basis of both BD symptoms (depression and hypo/mania) and perceived cognitive errors (i.e., forgetfulness, distractibility, false triggering). We hypothesized that participants reporting more BD symptoms and cognitive errors would report lower psychological well-being (i.e., self-efficacy, life scheme, life satisfaction). A second objective was to determine if and how cl

Psychological flexibility as a potential change factor in cognitive behavioural therapy of OCD.

BACKGROUND: To gain a better understanding about which aspects of the treatment work for obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), the investigation of possible change factors is essential. Psychological flexibility (PsyF) has been of interest in research on successful OCD therapy for some time. Exposure interventions and cognitive strategies in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for OCD may enhance PsyF. To date, however, no process studies have been published that clarify the role of PsyF as a possible change factor for the reduction of OCD symptoms. AIMS: This study investigates whether PsyF

Cognition and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: Exploring Relationships with Psychological Functions.

OBJECTIVE: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is strongly associated with difficulties in emotion regulation, but its relationships with maladaptive cognitive processes are less clear. METHOD: The current study examined relationships between self-reported NSSI (presence, number of methods, frequency, recency, duration, functions) and negative cognitive processes (rumination, worry, self-criticism, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness) among 1,357 undergraduates. Cognition variables were submitted to exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and relationships were examined between the result

The cognitive and psychological effects of living with type 1 diabetes: a narrative review.

Across the lifespan, type 1 diabetes mellitus has a profound (neuro)psychological impact. In young people, type 1 diabetes can interfere with psychosocial development and hamper school performance. In adulthood, it can interfere with work life, relationships and parenting. A substantial minority of adults with type 1 diabetes experience coping difficulties and high diabetes-related distress. In youth and adulthood, type 1 diabetes is related to mild cognitive decrements as well as affective disorders, such as depression and anxiety. There is limited literature available that explores the inter
