Beyond the cognitive insight paradox: Self-reflectivity moderates the relationship between depressive symptoms and general psychological distress in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: People with psychosis experience significant emotional burden and distress associated with the symptomatic consequences of their mental disorder, thus difficulting their recovery. Several studies have found self-reflectivity, a dimension of cognitive insight, to be associated with effects which taken together may seem paradoxical, by predicting less psychotic symptom severity but more depression. To elucidate this issue, we examined the influence of psychotic symptoms, depressive symptoms, and self-reflectivity, on psychological distress. Further, we tested whether self-reflectivit

Does invasion success reflect superior cognitive ability? A case study of two congeneric lizard species (Lampropholis, Scincidae).

A species' intelligence may reliably predict its invasive potential. If this is true, then we might expect invasive species to be better at learning novel tasks than non-invasive congeners. To test this hypothesis, we exposed two sympatric species of Australian scincid lizards, Lampropholis delicata (invasive) and L. guichenoti (non-invasive) to standardized maze-learning tasks. Both species rapidly decreased the time they needed to find a food reward, but latencies were always higher for L. delicata than L. guichenoti. More detailed analysis showed that neither species actually learned the po

Serum glial fibrillary protein reflects early brain injury dynamics and cognitive changes after deep brain stimulation surgery.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an efficient treatment for movement disorders, most commonly Parkinson's Disease (PD), dystonia and essential tremor. DBS surgery carries risks, e.g. the risk of delayed peri-lead edema (PLE) and the risk of postoperative cognitive decline. The mechanisms of these complications are not fully understood and there is no established biomarker to screen for these complications after DBS surgery. To explore the diagnostic value of two blood-based markers representative for distinct types of brain injury, we characterized the dynamics of serum glial fibrillary acidic

Depression, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cognitive Impairment (DOC) Screen Completion Time Reflects Executive Function, Speed of Processing and Fluency.

BACKGROUND: The depression, obstructive sleep apnea and cognitive impairment (DOC) screen assesses three post-stroke comorbidities, but additional information may be gained from the time to complete the screen. Cognitive screening completion time is rarely used as an outcome measure. OBJECTIVE: To assess DOC screen completion time as a predictor of cognitive impairment in stroke/transient ischemic attack clinics. METHODS: Consecutive English-speaking stroke prevention clinic patients consented to undergo screening and neuropsychological testing (n = 437). DOC screen scores and times were com

Does tapping in sync reflect cognitive control? Links between sensorimotor synchronization, social context, and executive function in early childhood.

Varying rhythmic contexts impose distinct cognitive and sensorimotor demands. This study investigated the effects of social scaffolding on children's sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) across different contexts and examined the association between SMS and executive function (EF). A total of 140 children aged 4-5 years participated in tapping tasks using a developmentally appropriate sensor-embedded drum platform. The results indicated that tapping synchronization at 150 bpm, children's typical spontaneous motor tempo (SMT), improved significantly in the presence of a tapping partner, whereas o

Reduced Resting-State Cortical Alpha Connectivity Reflects Distinct Functional Brain Dysconnectivity in Alzheimer's Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Background: Emerging evidence suggests distinct abnormal activity patterns during resting state in intrinsic functional brain networks in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study aimed to identify the changes in the resting-state intracortical lagged phase synchronization derived from dense array electroencephalography (EEG) in AD and MCI. Methods: Resting-state current source density (CSD) and lagged phase synchronization between 84 regions of interest defined by Brodmann areas (BAs) for seven EEG frequency ba

Is acamprosate use in alcohol dependence treatment reflected in improved subjective health status outcomes beyond cognitive behavioural therapy alone?

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the addition of acamprosate to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) outpatient alcohol dependence treatment impacted on subjective health status. METHOD: Among 268 patients consecutively treated for alcohol dependence, 149 chose CBT alone. A matched design was used. From a possible pool of 119 Acamprosate + CBT and 149 CBT-only patients, 86 Acamprosate + CBT subjects were individually matched with 86 CBT-only patients on parameters of gender, age, prior detoxification and alcohol dependence severity. Early wave reflection of carotid artery is associated with 18 F-FDG PET hypometabolism in Alzheimer's brain areas of cognitively normal adults.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial stiffening likely plays a role in Alzheimer disease (AD) pathogenesis. The current study investigated whether inter-individual variations in arterial stiffness and pressure wave parameters were associated with 18 F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) metabolism in AD-associated brain areas throughout adulthood, independently of age and before the onset of any neuropsychological disorders. METHODS: A prospective, large age-range population of 67 patients (17 young, 16 middle-aged, and 34 older adults; 37 women) underwent a: brain 18 F-FDG PET, blood pressure recording

Decreased beta-band activity in left supramarginal gyrus reflects cognitive decline: Evidence from a large clinical dataset in patients with dementia.

Cognitive impairment is a major concern in clinical medicine. It is usually evaluated with neuropsychological assessments, which have inherent limitations. To compensate for them, magnetoencephalography has already come into clinical use to evaluate the level of cognitive impairment. It evaluates global changes in the frequency of resting-state brain activity, which are associated with cognitive status. However, it remains unclear what neural mechanism causes the frequency changes. To understand this, it is important to identify cortical regions that mainly contribute to these changes. We retr

Event-related brain potentials reflect increased concentration ability after mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for depression: a randomized clinical trial.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) effectively prevents relapse/recurrence in major depression. The ability to deploy and maintain attention on a particular focus is considered as a prerequisite for 'mindful', 'metacognitive' awareness, and hence crucial for therapy success. Accordingly, sustained concentration is the skill most extensively taught in MBCT. The goal of the present study was to test whether this ability increases after MBCT, as assumed. The late component of the contingent negative variation (CNV), an event-related brain potential (ERP), known to reflect the allocation o

Understanding the Barriers to Accessing Symptom-Specific Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for Distressing Voices: Reflecting on and Extending the Lessons Learnt From the CBT for Psychosis Literature.

The experience of hearing voices ('auditory hallucinations') can cause significant distress and disruption to quality of life for people with a psychosis diagnosis. Psychological therapy in the form of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for psychosis is recommended for the treatment of positive symptoms, including distressing voices, but is rarely available to patients in the United Kingdom. CBT for psychosis has recently evolved with the development of symptom-specific therapies that focus upon only one symptom of psychosis at a time. Preliminary findings from randomized controlled trials sugge

Fibromyalgia patients had normal distraction related pain inhibition but cognitive impairment reflected in caudate nucleus and hippocampus during the Stroop Color Word Test.

The mechanisms causing cognitive problems in chronic pain patients are not well understood. We used the Stroop color word task (SCWT) to investigate distraction-induced analgesia, cognitive performance, and cerebral activation patterns in 29 fibromyalgia (FM) patients (mean age 49.8 years, range 25-64 years) and 31 healthy controls (HC) (mean age 46.3 years, range 20-63 years). In the first study, SCWT was used to investigate distraction-induced analgesia in FM patients. Two versions of the task were applied, one with only congruent color-word images and one with incongruent images. Pressure p

My journey to find fulfillment in life and work.

This manuscript explores the author's journey of balancing life and work through mindful reflection and intentional changes, prompted by the loss of a close friend and mentor. The author shares 6 key changes he made to align actions with his life priorities: completing clinical work at work, removing work email from his phone, avoiding work outside of work hours, disconnecting during vacations, seeking help when needed, and cultivating fulfilling hobbies. The manuscript emphasizes the importance of regular reflection on priorities and creating a balanced life that values personal well-being al

Conducting a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial on a Medical Inpatient Unit Utilizing Cognitive Remediation Therapy for Adolescents with Restrictive Eating Disorders: Protocol Updates and Reflections on Feasibility.

We conducted a pilot randomized control trial (RCT) to simultaneously examine the feasibility of effectively implementing Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) during medical hospitalization at a single-site hospital center. Employment of this protocol occurred on a general medical unit with diverse medical admitting diagnoses, not an eating disorder floor of a hospital and not part of a structured inpatient anorexia nervosa treatment program. This was the first time an RCT for a psychosocial intervention was implemented on this unit with patients with
